        The use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist post-ovulation trigger in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

        The purpose of this paper is to assimilate all data pertaining to the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists in in vitro fertilization cycles after ovulation trigger to reduce the symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). A systematic review of the literature was performed to identify all studies performed on the use of a GnRH antagonist in IVF cycle post-ovulation trigger with patients at high risk for OHSS. Ten studies were identified and reviewed. Descriptions of the studies and their individual results are presented in the following manuscript. Due to significant heterogeneity among the studies, it was not possible to perform a group analysis. The use of GnRH antagonists post-ovulation trigger for treatment of OHSS has been considered for almost 20 years, though research into its use is sparse. Definitive conclusions and recommendations cannot be made at this time, though preliminary data from these trials demonstrate the potential for GnRH antagonists to play a role in the treatment of OHSS in certain patient populations.

        A NON-LINEAR TIME SERIES MODEL FOR THE SOUTH KOREAN WON/BRITISH POUND EXCHANGE RATE: 1.1.97-9.30.98

        We construct a non-linear time series model for the South Korean Won/British Pound exchange rate for the period 1 January 1997 to 30 September 1998. This was a period of great upheaval in the South Korean financial markets. We show that a variant of the GARCH class of models provides a good fit to the data. We use the model to produce a set of one-step-ahead exchange rate forecasts for the first ten trading days of October 1998. The model produces better forecasts than the well-known random walk model.

        Vascularized Bone Graft Reconstruction for Upper Extremity Defects: A Review

        Upper extremity reconstruction may pose clinical challenges for surgeons due to the often-critical, complex functional demands of the damaged and/or missing structures. The advent of vascularized bone grafts (VBGs) has aided in reconstruction of upper extremity (UE) defects due to their superior regenerative properties compared with nonvascularized bone grafts, ability to reconstruct large bony defects, and multiple donor site options. VBGs may be pedicled or free transfers and have the potential for composite tissue transfers when bone and soft tissue are needed. This article provides a comprehensive up-to-date review of VBGs, the commonly reported donor sites, and their indications for the treatment of specific UE defects.

        전통적인 종교단체들은, 21세기 초에 인류가 직면하고 있는 기술적이며 제도적인 수많은 도전에 대처해 오지 않았다. 따라서 이 심포지엄의 주최측이, 어떻게 천태종이 보다 건설적이며 유용한 21세기 문명 창조에 일조할 수 있을까를 모색하고 있다는 것은 말할 수 없이 중요하고 의미 깊다. 천태불교는 중국에서 시작되었다. 이것은 천태 지의(538~597)의 뛰어난 禪敎 통합뿐만 아니라 陳나라와 598년에 중국을 통일한 수나라 정부로부터의 지원이 있었기에 가능했다. 마찬가지로 일본에서의 천태불교는 最澄(767~822)라는 종교 지도자가 있었고,그가 일본 平安 정부의 지지를 받을 수 있었기 때문에 영향력을 발휘할 수 있었다. 한국에서의 천태종은 대각국사 의천(1055~1101)의 종교적 · 정신적 지도력과 그가 문종(1046~1083 재위)의 넷째들이라는 명성 때문에 창종될 수 있었다. 하지만 오늘날 천태종을 비롯한 많은 불교 종단은 국가의 통제로부터 벗어나 있고 헌법에 의해 보호받고 있다는 바로 그 점 때문에 번창하고 있다. 그러므로 천태종의 역사가 21세기 지구촌 문명을 위해 주는 첫번째 교훈은,상호간의 건강과 안녕을 위해 정부와 법과 종교 사이에는 적당한 거리와 균형이 필요하다는 것이다. 그러나 오늘날은 누구나가 다음과 같은 질문을 던져야만 한다. 즉 비즈니스에 의해 지배되고 있는 세계에서 과연 적당한 거리와 균형과 자유가 있을 수 있는가를 물어야만 한다. Traditional religious communities have not raced many of the technical and institutional challenges that face humanity at the beginning of the 21st century. As a result, it is extremely significant that the organizers of this symposium are exploring how the Choentae traditon might help to create a more positive civilization in the 21st century. Tiantai Buddhism arose in China not only because of the brilliant synthesis of Tiantai Zhiyi(538~597), but also because of the government support from the Chen State, and then from the Sui Dynasty which unified China in 589 AD. Similarly, in Japan Tendai was influential not only because of the spiritual leadership of Saicho(767~822), but also because he was able to win the support of the Japanese Heian government. Also, in Korea Cheontae was established not only because of the spiritual leadership of the National Master Taegak(Uich`on 1055~1101), but also because of his prestige as the fourth son of King Munjong(1046~1083). Today, however, Cheontae and much of Buddhism flourishes precisely because it is separate from state control and protected by constitutional law. So the first lesson of Cheontae history for a global civilization of the 21st century is that some separation and balance is needed among government, law, and religion for their mutual health and wellbeing. But today everyone must ask if there can be any separation, balance, and freedom in a world dominated by business.

      • TRANSPOSIBLE MEMORY ARCHITECTURE

        This paper describes the design of a transposable memory architecture for providing equally fast access to stored data in two or more dimensions. This architecture is provided by orthogonal wiring of access devices, word lines and bit lines with independent random accessing capability for data in each direction. The transposable memory architecture(TMA) cell directly implements the TMA architecture using only one access device per dimension of accesses. The read and write operations described provided access and cycle times approximately equivalent to those for a convention one-dimension RAM.

      • Co-Design of Highly Efficient Power Amplifier and High-<tex> $Q$</tex> Output Bandpass Filter

        <P>This paper reports the first co-design configuration of a power amplifier (PA) in cascade with a high- Q bandpass filter. By matching the filter's input port directly to the transistor's drain node, the conventional output matching network (OMN) of a PA is entirely eliminated. This leads to smaller size/volume, minimized loss, and enhanced overall performance. To enable this co-design method, the matching-filter synthesis theory is proposed and investigated in detail in this paper. Based on this theory, a 3% bandwidth (centered at 3.03 GHz) two-pole filter, implemented using high- Q evanescent-mode cavity resonators, is designed as the PA OMN to provide optimized fundamental and harmonic impedances for a commercial 10-W GaN transistor. Simulation and measured results show that the co-designed PA-filter module yields a desired Chybeshev filter behavior while maintaining excellent PA performance in the passband with 72% efficiency, 10-W output power, >10-dB gain, and 60-dBm output third-order intercept point. This co-designed module experimentally presents a 8% higher overall efficiency compared to a control group developed using a conventional independent PA and filter, which further validates the effectiveness of this method.</P>

        담배 (Nicotiana tabacum L.) 현탁배양세포의 Elicitor 유도성 5-epi-Aristolochene Hydroxylase

        [$^3$H] 5-epi-aristolochene (5-EAS)를 담배 현탁배양세포에 투여하여 elicitor에 의해 유도된 세포가 생합성하여 배지로 방출하는 [$^3$H]-capsidiol의 량을 측정함으로써 5-EAS hydroxylase의 활성을 검정하였고, 이 반응의 전 단계에 관여하는 효소인 sesquiterpene cyclase의 발현특성과 비교하였다. 5-EAS hydroxylase는 정상세포에는 전혀 활성을 보이지 않으나 elicitor로써 cellulase를 처리한 세포는 9시간 후부터 유도를 시작하여 18시간 후에 최대 활성을 보였는데 동일한 세포내에서 유도되는 cyclase와 유사한 패턴을 보였다. Cyt P450계 효소의 특이적 억제제로 알려진 ancymidol과 ketoconazole에 의해 5-EAS hydroxylase의 활성은 강한 억제를 보인 반면 cyclase의 활성은 억제를 보이지 않아 5-EAS hydroxylase가 P450계 효소임이 시사되었다. Feeding experiment of [$^3$H] 5-epi-aristolochene (5-EAS) demonstrated in suspension cultures of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) that 5-EAS hydroxylase activity was absent from control cells, but induced to a maximum level within 18 h after the addition of cellulase, and was very similar to induction pattern of sesquiterpene cyclase. This result suggest that the conversion of 5-EAS to capsidiol is catalyzed by at least one elicitor-inducible hydroxylase. Cytochrome P450 inhibitors, ancymidol and ketoconazole, suppressed the elicitor-induced capsidiol accumulation by inhibiting hydroxylase activity, suggesting that the hydroxylase may be a Cyt P450 type enzyme.

        Memristive Device Fundamentals and Modeling: Applications to Circuits and Systems Simulation

        <P>The nonvolatile memory property of a memristor enables the realization of new methods for a variety of computational engines ranging from innovative memristive-based neuromorphic circuitry through to advanced memory applications. The nanometer-scale feature of the device creates a new opportunity for realization of innovative circuits that in some cases are not possible or have inefficient realization in the present and established design domain. The nature of the boundary, the complexity of the ionic transport and tunneling mechanism, and the nanoscale feature of the memristor introduces challenges in modeling, characterization, and simulation of future circuits and systems. Here, a deeper insight is gained in understanding the device operation, leading to the development of practical models that can be implemented in current computer-aided design (CAD) tools.</P>
