        Effect of Total Hip Arthroplasty on Ipsilateral Lower Limb Alignment and Knee Joint Space Width: Minimum 5-Year Follow-up

        Background: This study aimed to 1) assess the effect of total hip arthroplasty (THA) on coronal limb alignment, namely, the hip–knee–ankle angle (HKA), 2) identify factors that determine changes in the HKA, and 3) determine whether alignment changes influence the knee joint space width. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 266 limbs of patients who underwent THA. Three types of prostheses with neck shaft angles (NSAs) of 132°, 135°, and 138° were used. Several radiographic parameters were measured in the preoperative and final radiographs (at least 5 years after THA). A paired t-test was used to confirm the effect of THA on HKA change. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify radiographic parameters related to HKA changes following THA and changes in knee joint space width. Subgroup analyses were performed to reveal the effect of NSA change on the HKA change, and the proportion of total knee arthroplasty usage and changes in radiographic parameters between maintained joint space and narrowed joint space groups were compared. Results: The preoperative mean HKA was 1.4° varus and increased to 2.7° varus after THA. This change was related to changes in the NSA, lateral distal femoral angle, and femoral bowing angle. In particular, in the group with a decrease in NSA of > 5°, the preoperative mean HKA was largely changed from 1.4° varus to 4.6° varus after THA. The prostheses with NSA of 132° and 135° also led to greater varus HKA changes than those with an NSA of 138°. Narrowing of the medial knee joint space was related to changes in the varus direction of the HKA, decrease in NSA, increase in femoral offset. Conclusion: A large reduction in NSA can lead to considerable varus limb alignment after THA, which can have adverse effects on the medial compartment of the ipsilateral knee.

        Background: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to evaluate the degree of sinus involvement in cases of inverted papilloma (IP). However, CT cannot differentiate tumor from adjacent inflammatory mucosa or retained secretions. By contrast, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been reported to be useful in distinguishing IP from paranasal sinusitis. This study investigated whether preoperative assessment with MRI and CT accurately predict the extent of IP.1) Materials and methods: CT and MRI were retrospectively reviewed in 9 cases of IP. Patients were categorized into stages based on CT and MRI findings, according to the staging system proposed by Krouse. The involvement of IP in each sinus was also assessed. Results: Differentiation of IP from inflammatory disease may be more successful in routine cases where the inflammatory mucosa has low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and very high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. CT imaging could not differentiate tumor from adjacent inflammatory mucosa or retained secretions. Conclusion: Preoperative MRI of IP can predict the location and extent of the tumor involvement in the paranasal sinuses and sometimes predicts malignant changes.

      • Impact of urban warming on earlier spring flowering in Korea

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Using long‐term (1954–2004) observations of four selected species in South Korea: goldenbell (<I>Forsythia koreana</I>), azalea (<I>Rhododendron mucronulatum</I>), cherry (<I>Prunus yedoensis</I>), and peach (<I>Prunus persica</I>), the impact of urban warming on spring flowering was investigated. Trends of early spring temperatures and first‐flowering dates (FFDs) of the four plants were cross‐compared among nine differently urbanized cities. It was clearly observed that urban warming has led to an advance in the timing of first‐flowering of several days to weeks during recent decades, while the intrinsic physiology of plants to sense thermal energy has not been changed. The degree of advancement of the FFD was observed to be roughly proportional to degree of urbanization. Moreover, the sensitivity of the FFD to urban warming was estimated to be higher for the shrub species (−9.07 and −6.64 days °C<SUP>−1</SUP> for goldenbell and azalea, respectively) than the tree species (−2.46 and −2.90 days °C<SUP>−1</SUP> for peach and cherry, respectively). Our results suggest that the impact of urban warming should be considered as an influential factor which drives changes in the regional natural environment, especially in regions of rapid urbanization.         Season‐dependent warming characteristics observed at 12 stations in South Korea over the recent 100 years

        <P>A number of studies on the surface warming in the Korean Peninsula reported that there has been a notable increasing trend of surface air temperatures over the past several decades. Here, by analysing long‐term surface air temperature data at 12 stations in South Korea that have records longer than 60 years, the authors show that the warming of spring and autumn temperatures is characterized by quasi‐linear increases with time whereas the warming in winter and summer is characterized by one or two abrupt jumps. Change‐point analysis of the seasonal‐mean temperature time series shows that abrupt jumps in winter temperatures occurred in the late 1940s and late 1980s, while the jump in summer temperatures occurred in 1994 at most stations. The shape of the frequency distribution of the daily‐mean temperature anomalies at all stations shifts to the warmer side after the jumps for both winter and summer. This shift in turn results in the decrease of cold extremes in winter and the increase of warm extremes in summer at all stations. Our results indicate that recent temperature records in South Korea are characterized by the two different types of warming according to seasons.</P>

        COVID-19 확산 이후 한국사회 사회갈등 이슈와 미래신호 탐색: 국내 뉴스 기사 키워드를 중심으로

        본 연구는 코로나19 확산 이후 한국사회 사회갈등 양상의 강도와 범위, 그리고 변화를 포착하여 갈등이슈의 미래신호를 탐색하기 위해 수행되었다. 코로나19 확산이 시작된 2020년 1월부터 6월까지 ‘사회갈등’ 관련 이슈를 다룬 국내 뉴스 기사 8,897건을 수집하였다. 텍스트마이닝을 통해 주요 키워드 30개를 추출한 후, KEM(Keyword Emerge nce Map)과 KIM(Keyword Issue Map) 키워드 포트폴리오를 작성하였다. 주요결과, ‘약신호’ 영역에는 마스크, 북한, 교회, 대응책 키워드가 분포하였으며, ‘강신호’ 영역에는 경제, 대통령, 국가, ‘잠재신호’ 영역에는 혐오, 교육, 통합, ‘강하지만 증가율이 낮은 신호’ 영역에는 정치, 정부, 원내대표 등의 단어가 분포된 것을 확인하였다. 연구결과에 따라 코로나19 이후 한국사회 복합갈등 양상과 갈등이슈의 변화 및 미래신호를 해석하고 시시각각 변화하는 사회갈등에 대한 전략적 대응방안을 논의하였다. This study examines intensity and scopes of social conflicts and explores the future signal of conflict issues since COVID-19. For these purposes, this study collected 8,897 news articles related to ‘Social conflicts’ between January and June 2020. Analysis of text mining produced 30 key words which were reanalyzed by Keyword Emergence Map (KEM) and Keyword Issue Map (KIM). Key findings are as follows: The weak signal zone includes keywords such as mask, North Korea, church, and count measures; The strong signal includes economy, president, and nation; The latent signal zone reports hatred, education, and integration; The strong but slow growing zone includes politics, government, and floor leader. This study interprets the multiple social conflict phenomena and their changes. In addition, This study concludes with implications of strategic responses to changing social conflicts in Korea.

        Combination of Vitamin C and Rutin on Neuropathy and Lung Damage of Diabetes Mellitus Rats

        We investigated the role of vitamin C or rutin on neuropathy and lung damage of diabetic mellitus(DM) rats. Norepinephrine content was significantly decreased in sciatic nerves of DM rats compared with non-DM controls but vitamin C had no effect on decreases of norepinephrine. 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) incorporation, which is biomarker of protein oxidation, was increased in sciatic nerve of DM rats as compared with normal control. However, vitamin C had no effects on increases of DNPH incorporation . We measured the content of conjugated dienes (CD) as a biomarker of lipid oxidation in sciatic nerve. CD was increased in DM as compared with normal control, Vitamin C or rutin had no effects on increases of CD. However, Rutin plus vitamin C significantly decreased the content of CD as compared with CIM rats. In lung of DM rats, DNPH incorporation or CD was increased as compared with normal control. Vitamin C or Rutin had no effects on increases of CD However, Rutin plus vitamin C significantly decreased the content of DNPH incorporation or CD in lung tissue. Vitamin C caused marked pathological changes such as the increases of parenchyma and the thickening of alveolar septa in the lung of DM. Rutin had protective effects on the pathological changes in the lung of DM rats. In conclusion, Vitamin C had no effects on oxidative parameter, such as DNPH incorporation or CD, and on the decreases of norepinephrine content in DM rats. Vitamin C caused the marked pathological changes in the lung of DM rats but rutin had protective efforts against the pathological changes.

        To consider the efficiency of system operation under the introduction of the PQ, this study investigated the condition of the current national liability supervising system, and the condition of the operation of the foreign supervising system. This study also investigated the current PQ criterion, judgement method, and the problem of the PQ intention decision process. This study was conducted to try to find a engineering competition improvement of national supervising system and PQ system development direction through the presentation of reasonable improvement plan. In conclusion, this study was tried to find a improvement guide through analysis of problem in current system, but we was not concluded that all problem was improved by replacement of system or rule. It was more important that order and service system were respect to PQ Judgement criterion and engaged on construction engineering service system. It was important that presentation of reasonable system. but these system was applicated justly and elastically under the condition of faithful contract performance. We expected that in these condition. improved system was used efficiently and positive effect through the system improvement.
