The tetrakis(thio)-substituted-1,4-benzoquinone products 4a-e, 6, 7, and the mono(alkoxy)-tris(thio)-substituted-1,4-benzoquinone products 5a-e and 8a-e were synthesized from the reactions of p-chloranil with some thiols and mixture of two different thiol compounds in alcohol in the presence of Na2CO3 at room temperature. The structures of the novel S,S,S,S- and S,S,S,O- substituted products, which were obtained by the reactions of p-chloranil as a starting compound with n-propanethiol, n-pentanethiol, n-decanethiol, n-dodecanethiol, 2-methyl-2-propanethiol, and mixture of n-decanethiol and n-cyclohexanethiol as S-nucleophiles, were characterized by spectroscopic methods.

Objective: Myostatin is a growth factor which is investigated regarding musculoskeletal system. Albeit its effect on muscle mass is known, it is considered likely having other unknown effects as well, particularly on central nervous system. With this study, it is aimed to find out that what type of effect electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) does on myostatin in patients with treatment resistant depression. Methods: Twenty-nine patients with treatment resistant major depression and thirty healthy volunteers were included in the study. Pre- and post-ECT levels of myostatine were compared; also this results were compared to healthy controls. Results: For 29 patients with treatment-resistant major depression, the pre-treatment mean myostatin level was 0.95±0.32 ng/ml and post-therapy myostatin level was 11.05±6.97 ng/ml. As a result of this study, it is found that ECT affects serum myostatin levels to a significant degree (t=4.17, p<0.05). It is also found that there was a significant relation between serum myostatin levels and depression scores (r=0.392, p<0.05). Conclusion: With the present study and similar ones, it can be understood that how ECT achieves its effectiveness biologically.

In this study, some novel thiosubstituted butenyne (3a-d, 7b, 15b), butadiene (4a-b, 4d, 5a, 5c, 6b, 8e, 9c, 10b, 16b,18e) and [3]cumulene (11a-b with isomer 3a-b, 12a with isomer 13a, 14b, 17e) compounds were synthesized from the reaction of 2H-pentachloro-1,3-butadiene with thiols. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, UV-vis, IR, 1H NMR, NMR (13C or APT) spectroscopy.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of enterococci in cheese samples and to characterize their antimicrobial resistance profiles as well as the associated resistance genes. A total of 139 enterococci were isolated from 99 cheese samples, the isolates were identified as E. faecalis (61.2%), E. faecium (15.1%), E. gallinarum (12.9%), E. durans (5.0%), E. casseliflavis (2.9%) and E. avium (2.9%). The most frequent antimicrobial resistance observed in enterococci isolates was to lincomycin (88.5%), followed by kanamycin (84.2%), gentamycin (low level, 51.1%), rifampin (46.8%) and tetracycline (33.8%). Among the isolates, the frequencies of high level gentamycin and streptomycin resistant enterococci strains were 2.2% and 5.8%, respectively. Apart from the mentioned antibiotics, low levels of resistance to ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and chloramphenicol were found. Moreover no resistance was observed against penicillin and ampicillin. The antimicrobial resistance genes including tetM, tetL, ermB, cat, aph(3’)-IIIa, ant(6)-Ia and aac(6’)-Ieaph(2’’)-Ia were found in enterococci from Turkish cheese samples. In the current study, we provided data for antibiotic resistance and the occurrence of resistance genes among enterococci. Regulatory and quality control programs for milk and other dairy products from farms to retail outlets has to be established and strengthened to monitor trends in antimicrobial resistance among emerging food borne pathogens in Turkey.
An Analytical Solution to a Simplified EDXRF Model for Monte Carlo Code Verification

The objective of this study is to obtain an analytical solution to the scalar photon transport equation that can be used to obtain benchmark results for the verification of energy dispersive X Ray fluorescence (EDXRF) Monte Carlo simulation codes. The multi-collided flux method (multiple scattering method) is implemented to obtain analytical expressions for the space-, energy-, and angle-dependent scalar photon flux for a one dimensional EDXRF model problem. In order to obtain benchmark results, higher-order multiple scattering terms are included in the multi-collided flux method. The details of the analytical solution and of the proposed EDXRF model problem are presented. Analytical expressions obtained are then used to calculate the energy-dependent current. The analytically-calculated energy-dependent current is compared with Monte Carlo code results. The findings of this study show that analytical solutions to the scalar photon transport equation with the proposed model problem can be used as a verification tool in EDXRF Monte Carlo code development.

In this work, we prove the instability of solutions for a class of nonlinear functional differential equations of the eighth order with n-deviating arguments. We employ the functional Lyapunov approach and the Krasovskii criteria to prove the main results. The obtained results extend some existing results in the literature.
