      • Understanding and Predicting Behavioral Intent of Food Concessionaires on Solid Waste Management in a University Campus

Cecile V. Benitez ASCONS 2018 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EMERGING MULTIDISCIPLINAR Vol.2 No.4

The Philippines’ National Solid Waste Management reported that kitchen/food and other organic wastes comprises 50% of the total solid waste generated. This is the rationale that this study was undertaken to include the waste generators. The central question which the study sought to understand is whether attitude and knowledge relates to each other on the subject of solid waste. A descriptive and correlational design was adopted in the solid waste management survey for the food concessionaries of the university. The study involved all food concessionaries within the university compound. A questionnaire survey composed of four parts was used as instrument. The main result of the study found that the Attitude variable is positively correlated with Knowledge variable (r = .418, p < .05) and it indicated that the relationship is significant. Perceptions on the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) positively correlated with Attitude and all three factors are found to be significantly related with Attitude. As to the mediating variables, i.e., Ease of Use, Usefulness, Volunteerism, and Facilitating Conditions, they were found to be explanatory with Knowledge rather than Attitude (particularly with Ease of Use and Volunteerism). Other mediating factors showed weak relationship with either Attitude or Knowledge. The food concessionaries were found to possess a positive attitude on the 3Rs . With the assumption that the results of the study estimates that of the population, the research found a sound basis for predicting behavioral intent of the food concessionaires to practice solid waste management.

      • Modeling the Critical Thinking Skills of Hospitality and Tourism Students

Cecile V. Benitez ASCONS 2019 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EMERGING MULTIDISCIPLINAR Vol.3 No.3

In 2017, Philippine Statistics Authority reported that tourism contributed 12.2 percent to the country’s gross domestic product amounting to PHP1.929 trillion. The study assessed hospitality and tourism students’ ability to logically analyze assumptions, arguments, deductions, inferences, and interpret information in various scenarios. The study concluded that among the various critical thinking indicators, Inference, Interpretation, and Argument are positively moderate to strongly associated with the students’ total scores. The factor Deduction and Assumptions are positively correlated with the dependent variable only slightly moderate. Self-Rating association with critical thinking did not establish strong correlation. Comparison of means showed that Gender did not significantly differentiate the scores on all indicators. On the basis of Course, analysis of variance showed that critical scores were differentiated excepting the variable Inference. Total scores indicated differences given the different Year Level. BSTM students showed a higher critical thinking scores in almost all indicators except Deductions.

Human Papillomavirus Genotype-Specific Persistence and Potential Risk Factors among Korean Women: Results from a 2-Year Follow-up Study

Cecile Ingabire,임민경,원영주,오진경 대한암학회 2018 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.50 No.3

Purpose High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection progression should be considered a critical factor for preventing cervical cancer, although most infections are transient and rarely persist. This study aimed to examine the specific types of HPV infections, their change patterns, and the potential risk factors among Korean women. Materials and Methods We included 4,588 women who visited hospitals in Busan and Suwon for cervical cancer screening, and 1,224 of these women attended a 2-year follow-up. Infection status was evaluated using HPV DNA testing (Hybrid Capture 2) and genotyping testing (Linear Array). Data regarding the potential risk factors for HPV infection were collected by trained nurses using structured questionnaires. Results Among the 1,224 women (mean age, 47 years), 105 women (8.6%) were HPV-positive at baseline. HPV infections had been cleared among 92 women (87.6%) within 2 years. Only 13 infections (12.4%) were remained, and the 10 cases of them are high-risk HPV types including genotype 33, 45, 16, 35, and 52. Among women who were negative at baseline, the HPV incidence was 4.8%. The HPV incidence was marginally associated with having multiple sexual partners (odds ratio, 2.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.0 to 3.9), although it was not significantly associated with HPV persistence. Conclusion Most HPV infections (88%) among Korean women were cleared within 2 years, with only a small number of persistent infections. The persistent HPV genotypes were different in our study, compared to those from previous studies. Having multiple sexual partners was associated with acquiring a HPV infection, but not with persistence.

A Study on the Importance of Uninsured (Indirect) Cost Item of Workplace Accidents

        ( Cecil Jung ),( Jong-bae Baek ) 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Chemical Engineering Research(HWAHAK KONGHA Vol.55 No.4

Estimation of accident cost is a sound and great safety indicator on determining accurate occupational safety and health prevention. Just like in Korea, Heinrich ratio analysis of (1:4) between direct and indirect costs has been become widely used in safety management because of its simplicity. In this study four major categories of uninsured (indirect) cost items and 18 sub-categories of uninsured (indirect) cost items were identified. To determine and validate the importance and necessity of the results of a literature review an expert or professional surveyed had been analyses using the SPSS 18.0, where in the participants whose expertize is in the field of compensation and safety. Based on the results of survey all participants all uninsured (indirect) cost items classified was important and necessary when accidents occurred. Despite recognition of expert on the classification of uninsured (indirect) cost items, it is quite difficult to make generalization for all kind of costs in occupational accident case due to different nature of business for each industry.

      • Mobility and Transmedia Use of 1.5 Generation Filipinos in Japan

Cecile Angela A. Ilagan Academy of Mobility Humanities 2023 Mobility Humanities Vol.2 No.1

Guided by Freire's idea of conscientisation, this article aims to find out if the 1.5 generation Filipinos in Japan are able to articulate their understanding and construction of their identities using media and other resources available to them. Specifically, it seeks to investigate if research participants can identify their historical and socio-cultural struggles, exercise agency in making identity and cultural choices, use transmedia to counter hegemonic representations, or create spaces for transforming their current realities. The study also questions the discourse on actively reframing hafu as daburu to refer to the biethnic 1.5 generation. Online surveys, field interviews, and focus group discussions were conducted in 2018, and archival research until mid 2022. Results reveal the following: individual contexts and resources are interconnected with global and social mobility; the process of labeling oneself indicates individual reasoning and agency in projecting the self and the culture/s of choice; identity performances and cultural expressions can be utilitarian or based on potential gains that the individual can derive from performing Filipinoness, Japaneseness, or biethnicity; critical consciousness is essential for emancipatory use of transmedia; and continuous use of transmedia for expressing multiethnic identities and cultures can open dialogues or activate engagement.

Prosthodontic Management of Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Literature Review

Cecil Williams,Manish Kumar,Manas Bajpai,Deshant Agarwal 대한예방치과학회 2014 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.10 No.1

The restoration of endodontically treated teeth is one of the most challenging situations of the dentist’s clinical practice, because it involves procedures related to several areas, such as endodontics, operative dentistry, and prosthetic dentistry. The restoration of endodontically treated teeth is a topic that is extensively studied and yet remains controversial from many perspectives. This article reviews the major pertinent literature on this topic, with an emphasis on major decision-making elements in proper post selection and restoration of endodontically treated teeth. Most endodontically treated teeth require a post and core build-up for restoring the teeth to optimum health and function. Selection of an appropriate post-and-core system from the wide variety of those available may be a clinical dilemma. Selection of a post and core system should satisfy many interrelated biologic, mechanical, and esthetic factors to optimally restore the endodontically treated tooth to adequate form and function. It is also important to remember that the prognosis of endodontically treated teeth depends not only on endodontic treatment success itself, but also on the amount of remnant tooth tissue and the definitive restoration that will be placed onto the dental element. This review may serve as a guide to aid the clinician in the selection of a post and core system.

Biocompatible Ti3Au–Ag/Cu thin film coatings with enhanced hardness and antimicrobial functionality

        Cecil Cherian Lukose,Ioannis Anestopoulos,Iraklis‑Stavros Panagiotidis,Guillaume Zoppi,Anna M. Black,Lynn G. Dover,Leon Bowen,Ángel Serrano‑Aroca,Terence Xiaoteng Liu,Lorenzo Mendola,Davide Morrone,Mi 한국생체재료학회 2023 생체재료학회지 Vol.27 No.00

Background Biofilm formation on medical device surfaces is a persistent problem that shelters bacteria and encourages infections and implant rejection. One promising approach to tackle this problem is to coat the medical device with an antimicrobial material. In this work, for the first time, we impart antimicrobial functionality to Ti3Au intermetallic alloy thin film coatings, while maintaining their superior mechanical hardness and biocompatibility. Methods A mosaic Ti sputtering target is developed to dope controlled amounts of antimicrobial elements of Ag and Cu into a Ti3Au coating matrix by precise control of individual target power levels. The resulting Ti3Au- Ag/Cu thin film coatings are then systematically characterised for their structural, chemical, morphological, mechanical, corrosion, biocompatibility-cytotoxicity and antimicrobial properties. Results X-ray diffraction patterns reveal the formation of a super hard β-Ti3Au phase, but the thin films undergo a transition in crystal orientation from (200) to (211) with increasing Ag concentration, whereas introduction of Cu brings no observable changes in crystal orientation. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analysis show the polyhedral shape of the Ti3Au crystal but agglomeration of Ag particles between crystal grains begins at 1.2 at% Ag and develops into large granules with increasing Ag concentration up to 4.1 at%. The smallest doping concentration of 0.2 at% Ag raises the hardness of the thin film to 14.7 GPa, a 360% improvement compared to the ∼4 GPa hardness of the standard Ti6Al4V base alloy. On the other hand, addition of Cu brings a 315—330% improvement in mechanical hardness of films throughout the entire concentration range of 0.5—7.1 at%. The thin films also show good electrochemical corrosion resistance and a > tenfold reduction in wear rate compared to Ti6Al4V alloy. All thin film samples exhibit very safe cytotoxic profiles towards L929 mouse fibroblast cells when analysed with Alamar blue assay, with ion leaching concentrations lower than 0.2 ppm for Ag and 0.08 ppm for Cu and conductivity tests reveal the positive effect of increased conductivity on myogenic differentiation. Antimicrobial tests show a drastic reduction in microbial survival over a short test period of < 20 min for Ti3Au films doped with Ag or Cu concentrations as low as 0.2—0.5 at%. Conclusion Therefore, according to these results, this work presents a new antimicrobial Ti3Au- Ag/Cu coating material with excellent mechanical performance with the potential to develop wear resistant medical implant devices with resistance to biofilm formation and bacterial infection.
