Verbal Aggression Against Teacher and Upper Extremity Musculoskeletal Pain

Ceballos, Albanita G.C.,Carvalho, Fernando M. Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2020 Safety and health at work Vol.11 No.2

Background: This study investigated the relationship between verbal aggression against school teachers and upper extremity (neck, shoulder, upper limb, and/or upper back) musculoskeletal pain. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 525 elementary school teachers from Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Northeast Brazil. Results: The prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal pain among teachers who reported verbal aggression in the past six months (67.7%) was higher than that among those who did not report verbal aggression (51.7%): (prevalence ratio = 1.21; 95% confidence interval = 1.04-1.40). The prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal pain was associated with verbal aggression, sex, and common mental disorders, controlled by skin color, age, monthly income, teachers' education, years working as a teacher, workload, and obesity. Furthermore, the measure of the association between verbal aggression and upper extremity musculoskeletal pain was modified by sex and common mental disorders, considered altogether. Teachers who suffered verbal aggression, of the feminine sex, and also having common mental disorders reported high prevalence (85.4%) of upper extremity musculoskeletal pain. Conclusion: The association between verbal violence in the school and complaints of upper extremity musculoskeletal pain was strong and modified by teachers' sex and common mental disorders.

Effects of D-003 (10 mg/day) on Bone Mineral Density of the Lumbar Spine and Femoral Neck in Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized, Double-Blinded Study

( Alfredo Ceballos ),( Gladys Castano ),( Sarahi Mendoza ),( Juan Gonzalez ),( Rosa Mas ),( Lilia Fernandez ),( Jose Illnait ),( Meilis Mesa ),( Rafael Gamez ),( Julio Cesar Fernandez ),( Ricardo Tell 대한내과학회 2011 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.26 No.2

Background/Aims: Increased osteoclast activity is a pivotal finding in osteoporosis. This increase is mediated via the mevalonate-to-cholesterol pathway, which is involved in producing the intermediates required for osteoclast activity. D-003, a mixture of high molecular weight sugarcane wax acids, has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis prior to mevalonate production, resulting in a reduction of bone loss and resorption in ovariectomized rats. Moreover, previous studies have demonstrated that short-term D-003 treatment reduces urinary excretion of deoxypyridinoline/creatinine in postmenopausal women. Methods: We performed a double-blinded, placebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of D-003 (10 mg/day) treatment for 3 years on bone mineral density (BMD) in 83 postmenopausal women with low BMD. Results: Over 3 years, D-003 treatment increased lumbar spine BMD (5.1%, p < 0.01) and improved osteoporosis-related quality of life scores as compared with placebo-treated controls. D-003 was also well tolerated; the frequency of adverse events in the bone, joints, or muscle with D-003 treatment (p < 0.05) was lower than in the placebo group. Conclusions: D-003 treatment (10 mg/day) for 3 years increased lumbar spine BMD and produced clinical improvements in postmenopausal women with low BMD. Further studies, however, will be required to confirm these results. (Korean J Intern Med 2011;26:168-178)

Nonthermal plasma on the shear bond strength of relining resin to thermoplastic denture base resin

        Liezl Manaloto-Ceballos,윌마트 라브리아가,송소연,박진홍,이정열,신상완 대한치과보철학회 2018 대한치과보철학회지 Vol.56 No.3

Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of nonthermal plasma treatment on the bond strength of autopolymerizing relining resin to the injection molded thermoplastic denture base resins (TDBRs) with different surface treatments. Materials and methods: Acrylic Resin (Acrytone), Polyester (Estheshot-Bright), Polyamide (Valplast) and Polypropylene (Weldenz) were subjected to various surface treatments: No treatment, Nonthermal plasma, Sandblasting, Sandblasting and nonthermal plasma. Specimens were bonded using an autopolymerizing relining resin. Shear bond strength was tested using universal testing machine with crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Statistical analysis by two-way analysis of variance with Tukey’ test post hoc was used. Results: Acrytone showed significantly higher shear bond strength value among other TDBR group while Weldenz had the lowest. The sandblasting and nonthermal plasma condition had significantly higher shear bond strength value in all of the resin groups (P < .05). Conclusion: The use of nonthermal plasma treatment showed limited effect on the shear bond strength between TDBRs and relining resin, and combination of nonthermal plasma and sandblasting improved the shear bond strength between TDBR and reline material.

Product experiences of clothing attachment in baby boomers in the United States

        Lina M. Ceballos,Seoha Min 한국의류학회 2020 Fashion and Textiles Vol.7 No.1

Despite the importance of the baby boomer generation, there is relatively scarce research focused on that consumer group. Based on the framework of product experience, this study explores the experiences of older baby boomers associated with consumer-clothing attachment. The interpretive approach utilized in-depth interviews with 18 older baby boomers born between 1946 and 1955 to enquire about their experiences with attached clothing. Participants were asked to bring to the interview photographs of the clothing they had become more attached to. Findings indicate that the experiences of older baby boomers with attached clothing are mainly created, developed, and maintained via all three dimensions of product experience; aesthetic properties of the product, positive emotions triggered by the product, and the symbolic and instrumental meanings associated with the product. However, the aesthetic properties and positive emotions related to those products were bound to its assigned meanings. Meaning varied and was classified as associations with: identity or the belief that the object is a self-extension; memories or the connection with the past; social standing or sense of status; and strong associations with utility. For all participants, the stronger the experience of meaning with a specific product, the stronger the level of attachment towards that product. This qualitative investigation extends the understanding of the framework of product experience and the concept of consumer-clothing attachment. Contributions offer opportunities to marketers and designers who seek to better understand the experiences behind baby boomers’ clothing attachment.

Role power dynamics within the bridal gown selection process

        Seoha Min,Lina M. Ceballos,Jennifer Yurchisin 한국의류학회 2018 Fashion and Textiles Vol.5 No.1

In this study, the researchers explore the decision-making process of brides when selecting their wedding dresses by examining the power of the significant people involved in the selection process. Within a framework of role theory and symbolic interactionism, qualitative data from an open-ended survey with 71 brides were collected online and analyzed. The interpretations revealed two main themes that explain how social power is determined and how different actors use bases of power to influence the selection of the wedding dress, when considered as a group decision. The six main categories further explained the bases of power used by the actors involved in the wedding dress selection process. This research extends the understanding of the bases of power and social roles in the specific context of the ritual of matrimony. Managerial implications are included for wedding retailers seeking to further understand the dynamics among family members during wedding preparations, so they can provide more effective guidance and support to the bride-to-be during the selling process.

      • OWNED MEDIA IN TWITTER OF MULTINATIONAL FIRMS: TO CENTRALIZE OR TO DECENTRALIZE?

        Nora Lado,Manuel Ceballos,Angel Garcia-Crespo 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

There is scarcity of studies on social media strategy, and their appropriate implementation, applied to the case multinational corporations. In particular; there is a lack of studies adopting a cross-cultural approach (Okazaki and Taylor, 2013). Behind this fact is the assumption that, in general, multinational corporations adopt a global strategy that does not fit well with the personalized nature of social media. From the perspective of social media management, there are a kind of dilemma between the adoption of a centralized and standardized content generation and diffusion approach vis ? vis adopting a decentralization orientation at country level or even a more local level. Berthon, Pitt, Plangger, and Shapiro (2012) signal the challenge of standardizing corporate content in social media and point out the advantage of take into consideration the specificities of different cultures and countries. We found a tension between two trends, for one hand social media implies co-creation and the sharing the power between the firm and their customer, while global integrated marketing communications follow precisely the opposite route. This research was conducted to examine the influence of centralization degree of social media communication towards online customer. We develop an empirical study applied to more than 160 corporate Twitter accounts from Iberoamerican countries. These accounts are the universe of Spanish corporates accounts of a set of the most important global automobile brands over a two-month study period. We use post-level engagement metric as measure of consumers’ attitudinal responses to corporate tweets. The results indicate that online customer engagement is affected by the type of the social media account of the brand (global, country, distributor, event specific). A strategy of issuing tweets from more general and global account result in a greater impact on customer engagement. In general, it seems that a centralized strategy obtains more effect in the number of obtained retweets even controlling by content topic, sender and post characteristic. This research has important implications for Digital Managers of corporations in terms of better understanding and improving corporates’ strategy in the social media communication channels.

Risk Factors for Mortality in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: An Overview in a Mexican Population

        ( Arturo Cortés-tellés ),( Stephanie López-romero ),( Roberto Mancilla-ceballos ),( Diana Lizbeth Ortíz-farías ),( Nelda Núñez-caamal ),( Esperanza Figueroa-hurtado ) 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 2020 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.83 No.-

Background: Currently, Mexico ranks third worldwide in mortality due to coronavirus disease pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) and reliable information is scarce, with the available data focused on epidemiological characteristics. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with mortality and outcomes in hospitalized Mexican patients with COVID-19. Methods: We prospectively assessed patients admitted to a COVID-19 reference center in southeast Mexico between March 28 and June 30, 2020. Mortality was defined as survivors or non-survivors and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the association of the clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters with mortality. Results: We included 200 patients with a mean age of 55 years, 69% were men and 72% had at least one chronic comorbidity. Eighty-six patients required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) with an overall mortality rate of 82.5%. Only 51% of the patients with IMV were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), with a survival rate of 27.3%, but only 7.2% for patients without ICU admissions (p=0.014). The multivariate analysis found that a neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio ≥9 (odds ratio [OR], 4.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.05-10.53) albumin <3.5 g/dL (OR, 3.76; 95% CI, 1.56-9.07), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level ≥725 U/L (OR, 5.45; 95% CI, 2.36-12.57), and IMV (OR, 64.7; 95% CI, 15.20-275.39) were independent risk factors associated with mortality. Conclusion: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, LDH, albumin, and IMV were independent risk factors for mortality in Mexican patients with COVID-19. Also, the availability of ICU resources is invaluable for better outcomes in critically ill patients. Our results could provide clinical information for timely decision-making in low-and-middle income countries to overcome the pandemic.

Antifibrotic Effects of (ㅡ)-Epicatechin on High Glucose Stimulated Cardiac Fibroblasts

        Alejandra Garate-Carrillo,Israel Ramirez-Sanchez,Justina Nguyen,Julisa Gonzalez,Guillermo Ceballos,Francisco Villarreal 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.11

Cardiac fibrosis is one of the hallmarks of a diabetic cardiomyopathy. When activated, cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) increase the production of extracellular matrix proteins. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 is known to mediate cardiac fibrosis through the SMAD pathway. High glucose (HG = 25 mM) cell culture media can activate CFs using TGF-β1. There is a need to identify effective antifibrotic agents. Studies in animals indicate that treatment with (−)-epicatechin (Epi) appears capable of reducing myocardial fibrosis. Epi binds to G-protein coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) and activates downstream pathways. We evaluated the potential of Epi to mitigate the development of a profibrotic phenotype in HG stimulated CFs. CF primary cultures were isolated from young male rats and were exposed for up to 48 h HG media and treated with vehicle or 1 μM Epi. Relevant profibrotic end points were measured by the use of various biochemical assays. HG exposure of CFs increased TGF-β1 protein levels by ∼15%, fibronectin ∼25%, urea levels ∼60%, proline incorporation ∼70%, and total collagen ∼15%. Epi treatment was able to significantly block HG induced increases in TGF-β1, fibronectin, urea, proline, and total collagen protein levels. GPER levels were reduced by HG and restored in CFs treated with Epi an effect associated with the activation (i.e., phosphorylation) of c-Src. Epi treatment also reverted SMAD levels. Altogether, results demonstrate that CFs cultured in HG acquire a profibrotic phenotype, which is blocked by Epi an effect, likely mediated at least, in part, by GPER effects on the SMAD/TGF-β1 pathway.
