Nanofibers from electrically driven viscoelastic jets: modeling and experiments

        Carroll, Colman P.,Zhmayev, Eduard,Kalra, Vibha,Joo, Yong-Lak The Korean Society of Rheology 2008 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.20 No.3

Modeling and experiments of three electrospinning systems have been presented and they are i) axisymmetric instabilities in electrospinning of various polymeric solutions, ii) non-isothermal modeling of polymer melt electrospinning, and iii) control of nanoparticle distribution and location via confined self-assembly of block copolymers during electrospinning. It has been demonstrated that predicted simulations are in good agreement with corresponding electro spinning experiments, and theoretical analysis provides fundamental understanding of phenomena that take place during electrospinning of various polymeric liquids.

      • Fostering Innovation and Excellence in Undergraduate Programs

Vol.2011 No.10

Offering an innovative program with a reputation for excellence is a goal of most nursing programs. Yet, schools of nursing may feel constrained in their programming by requirements of regulatory or accrediting bodies, faculty and other resource shortages, and expectations of agencies where students have practice experiences. Achievement of innovation and excellence in undergraduate programs requires intentional nurturing of an environment where faculty, students, and other stakeholders are respected; original ideas are welcomed; and high standards are valued. Within this context, evidence-informed curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; faculty development; supportive and collaborative relationships; and the courage to think and act beyond the bounds of regulatory or accreditation requirements are pre-requisites for innovative programs of high quality. Although creating such a milieu begins with the formal leader of the nursing program, this responsibility ultimately rests with individual faculty members. The purpose of this presentation, therefore, is to consider strategies to promote innovation and excellence in undergraduate nursing programs. Considered will be the vital role of the formal leader in creating an environment where excellence and innovation can flourish, including astute hiring of faculty, attention to work life quality, participatory planning, and resource acquisition and allocation. Also included will be the responsibilities of faculty members to participate in activities and interactions that will lead to and support innovation and excellence in undergraduate programs, such as knowledgeable involvement in curriculum development and implementation, and faculty development to support the curriculum. Strategies to gain support from health agencies for innovation in nursing education programming will be addressed. Finally, attention will be given to what constitutes innovation and excellence in undergraduate programs in view of resource limitations in most schools of nursing.

      • A guide to facilitate the early treatment of patients with idiopathic demyelinating disease (multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica)

        Carroll, WM,Saida, T,Kim, HJ,Kira, J,Kermode, AG,Tsai, CP,Fujihara, K,Kusunoki, S,Tanaka, M,Kim, KK,Bates, D SAGE Publications 2013 Multiple sclerosis journal: clinical and laborator Vol.19 No.10

Definite diagnosis of inflammatory demyelinating disease (multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO)) may require time, but early treatment offers the opportunity to maximize patient outcomes. The purpose of this report is to provide guidance to facilitate early treatment decisions for patients with inflammatory demyelinating disease, before definitive diagnosis. Neurology experts reviewed the existing literature and clinical evidence. A treatment decision pathway was developed, defining patients for whom first-line MS disease-modifying therapies (a) are unlikely to be effective, (b) may be effective but require careful monitoring and (c) are likely to provide benefit. This algorithm seeks to ensure that patients, particularly those in Asia, receive appropriate treatment early in inflammatory demyelinating disease.

Retail Product Development and Brand Management Collaboration between Industry and University Student Teams

Carroll, Katherine Emma Korean Academy of Marketing Science Vol.20 No.3

This paper describes a collaborative project between academia and industry which focused on improving the marketing and product development strategies for two private label apparel brands of a large regional department store chain in the southeastern United States. The goal of the project was to revitalize product lines of the two brands by incorporating student ideas for new solutions, thereby giving the students practical experience with a real-life industry situation. There were a number of key players involved in the project. A privately-owned department store chain based in the southeastern United States which was seeking an academic partner had recognized a need to update two existing private label brands. They targeted middle-aged consumers looking for casual, moderately priced merchandise. The company was seeking to change direction with both packaging and presentation, and possibly product design. The branding and product development divisions of the company contacted professors in an academic department of a large southeastern state university. Two of the professors agreed that the task would be a good fit for their classes - one was a junior-level Intermediate Brand Management class; the other was a senior-level Fashion Product Development class. The professors felt that by working collaboratively on the project, students would be exposed to a real world scenario, within the security of an academic learning environment. Collaboration within an interdisciplinary team has the advantage of providing experiences and resources beyond the capabilities of a single student and adds "brainpower" to problem-solving processes (Lowman 2000). This goal of improving the capabilities of students directed the instructors in each class to form interdisciplinary teams between the Branding and Product Development classes. In addition, many universities are employing industry partnerships in research and teaching, where collaboration within temporal (semester) and physical (classroom/lab) constraints help to increase students' knowledge and experience of a real-world situation. At the University of Tennessee, the Center of Industrial Services and UT-Knoxville's College of Engineering worked with a company to develop design improvements in its U.S. operations. In this study, Because should be lower case b with a private label retail brand, Wickett, Gaskill and Damhorst's (1999) revised Retail Apparel Product Development Model was used by the product development and brand management teams. This framework was chosen because it addresses apparel product development from the concept to the retail stage. Two classes were involved in this project: a junior level Brand Management class and a senior level Fashion Product Development class. Seven teams were formed which included four students from Brand Management and two students from Product Development. The classes were taught the same semester, but not at the same time. At the beginning of the semester, each class was introduced to the industry partner and given the problem. Half the teams were assigned to the men's brand and half to the women's brand. The teams were responsible for devising approaches to the problem, formulating a timeline for their work, staying in touch with industry representatives and making sure that each member of the team contributed in a positive way. The objective for the teams was to plan, develop, and present a product line using merchandising processes (following the Wickett, Gaskill and Damhorst model) and develop new branding strategies for the proposed lines. The teams performed trend, color, fabrication and target market research; developed sketches for a line; edited the sketches and presented their line plans; wrote specifications; fitted prototypes on fit models, and developed final production samples for presentation to industry. The branding students developed a SWOT analysis, a Brand Measurement report, a mind-map for the brands and a fully integrated 本文?述了??和??之? 目. ??
