Images of a Continent: Questioning the Role of Pan‐African Think‐Tanks in the Reinvention of Africa

Cardoso, Carlos 한국외국어대학교(글로벌캠퍼스) 아프리카연구소 2013 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.34 No.-

Taking stock from Ignacy Sachs book “La découverte du Tiers monde” (1971), and inspired by Mudimbe’s seminal works The Invention of Africa(1988) and The Idea of Africa(1994), the paper discusses the images of Africa produced by Think Tanks. The author argues that while there is a plurality and diversity of worldviews, reflecting the ideologies and scientific disciplinary backgrounds that underpin them, in practice the challenges that confront us today on issues of alterity are not dissimilar to those that Sachs and others raised nearly half century ago,. There is a need to question world views that establish hierarchies between the center, which is supposedly “civilized” and directs the world, and a periphery which is dominated and presumed “barbaric”. The author argues that the systematic study of the image of others, especially those produced by Think Tanks, call for a critical engagement that would provide us with an opportunity for a multidisciplinary international collaboration in the field of social sciences research. There is still a long way to go in the field of knowledge production in order to address what the 2010 UNESCO’s World Report on Social Science called “Knowledge Divides” that relate to the imbalances that exist in terms of knowledge production in different parts of the world coupled with our persisting inability to address the current global social processes from a multidisciplinary point of view, free from preconceived ideas and bias of all kinds.

Nonsurgical endodontic retreatment of fused teeth with transposition: a case report

Cardoso, Miguel Agostinho Beco Pinto,Noites, Rita Brandao,Martins, Miguel Andre Duarte,Paulo, Manuel Pedro da Fonseca The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2016 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.41 No.2

Tooth transposition is a disorder in which a permanent tooth develops and erupts in the normal position of another permanent tooth. Fusion and gemination are developmental disturbances presenting as the union of teeth. This article reports the nonsurgical retreatment of a very rare case of fused teeth with transposition. A patient was referred for endodontic treatment of her maxillary left first molar in the position of the first premolar, which was adjacent to it on the distobuccal side. Orthopantomography and periapical radiography showed two crowns sharing the same root, with a root canal treatment and an associated periapical lesion. Tooth fusion with transposition of a maxillary molar and a premolar was diagnosed. Nonsurgical endodontic retreatment was performed. At four yr follow-up, the tooth was asymptomatic and the radiolucency around the apical region had decreased, showing the success of our intervention. The diagnosis and treatment of fused teeth require special attention. The canal system should be carefully explored to obtain a full understanding of the anatomy, allowing it to be fully cleaned and obturated. Thermoplastic techniques were useful in obtaining hermetic obturation. A correct anatomical evaluation improves the set of treatment options under consideration, leading to a higher likelihood of esthetically and functionally successful treatment.

Bioelectricity Generation Using a Crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Chitosan (CS) Ion Exchange Membrane in Microbial Fuel Cell

Badillo-Cardoso Jonathan,Minsoo Kim,Jung Rae Kim The Korean Electrochemical Society 2023 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.14 No.4

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a bioelectrochemical system where electrochemically active bacteria convert organic waste into electricity. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS) are polymers that have been studied as potential alternative ion exchange membranes to Nafion for many electrochemical systems. This study examined the optimal mixing ratio of PVA and chitosan CS in a PVA:CS composite membrane for MFC applications. PVA:CS composite membranes with 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 ratios were synthesized and tested. The water uptake and ion exchange capacity, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and scanning electron microscopy images were analyzed to determine the physicochemical properties of PVA:CS membranes. The prepared membranes were applied to the ion exchange membrane of the MFC system, and their effects on the electrochemical performance were evaluated. These results showed that the composite membrane with a 3:1 (PVA:CS) ratio showed comparable performance to the commercialized Nafion membrane and produced more electricity than the other synthesized membranes. The PVA:CS membrane implemented MFCs produced a maximum power density of 0.026 mW cm-2 from organic waste with stable performance. Therefore, it can be applied to a cost-effective MFC system.

Effect of intracanal medications on the interfacial properties of reparative cements

        Andrea Cardoso Pereira,Mariana Valerio Pallone,Marina Angélica Marciano,Karine Laura Cortellazzi,Marcos Frozoni,Brenda P. F. A. Gomes,José Flávio Affonso de Almeida,Adriana de Jesus Soares 대한치과보존학회 2019 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.44 No.2

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of calcium hydroxide with 2% chlorhexidine gel (HCX) or distilled water (HCA) compared to triple antibiotic paste (TAP) on push-out bond strength and the cement/dentin interface in canals sealed with White MTA Angelus (WMTA) or Biodentine (BD). Materials and Methods: A total of 70 extracted human lower premolars were endodontically prepared and randomly divided into 4 groups according to the intracanal medication, as follows: group 1, HCX; group 2, TAP; group 3, HCA; and group 4, control (without intracanal medication). After 7 days, the medications were removed and the cervical third of the specimens was sectioned into five 1-mm sections. The sections were then sealed with WMTA or BD as a reparative material. After 7 days in 100% humidity, a push-out bond strength test was performed. Elemental analysis was performed at the interface, using energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance and the Tukey test (p < 0.05). Results: BD presented a higher bond strength than WMTA (p < 0.05). BD or WMTA in canals treated with calcium hydroxide intracanal medications had the highest bond strength values, with a statistically significant difference compared to TAP in the WMTA group (p < 0.05). There were small amounts of phosphorus in samples exposed to triple antibiotic paste, regardless of the coronal sealing. Conclusions: The use of intracanal medications did not affect the bond strength of WMTA and BD, except when TAP was used with WMTA.

Antidepressant-Like Activity of Sonchus oleraceus in Mouse Models of Immobility Tests

        Fabiana Cardoso Vilela,Marina de Mesquita Padilha,Geraldo Alves-da-Silva,Roseli Soncini,Alexandre Giusti-Paiva 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.1

The aim of the present work is to evaluate the putative antidepressant-like effects of hydroethanolic and dichloromethanic extracts from the aerial parts of Sonchus oleraceus (Family Asteraceae) on the performance of male mice in the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) models predictive of depression. The hydroethanolic and dichloromethanic extracts, both in doses of 30, 100, and 300mg/kg, were orally administered 1 hour before carrying out the FST or the TST. The immobility time in both the FST and the TST was significantly reduced by acute oral treatment with the extracts (dose range, 100–300mg/kg), without accompanying changes in ambulation, as assessed in an open-field test. This excluded the possibility that the effect of the extracts is due to an activation of locomotion. The efficacy of the extracts was found to be comparable to that of amitriptyline (10mg/kg, p.o.). The present study provides evidence for an antidepressant-like effect of the active principle(s) present in the extracts of S. oleraceus in mice. Therefore, a standardized S. oleraceus extract or its purified constituents could be of potential interest for the treatment of depressive disorders.

The Optimization of Codas via Onset-Nucleus Sharing : Evidence from a Developing Second Language System

Walcir Cardoso 서울대학교 언어교육원 (구 서울대학교 어학연구소) 2008 語學硏究 Vol.44 No.2

Using sociolinguistic methodology for data collection and analysis, this study investigates the variable development of English word-final voiceless stops (codas) by Brazilian Portuguese (BP) speakers. In particular, based on phonetic evidence and along the lines of Goad (2002), the study provides evidence for an intermediate developmental stage in the acquisition of English codas by BP speakers, characterized by the phenomenon of Onset- Nucleus Sharing (ONS). Under this analysis to the syllabification of syllablefinal consonants, it is assumed that the potential coda (C) syllabifies as an onset (O) and, in order to be licensed, some of its features spread into the following empty nucleus (N) in order to optimize the syllable shape of the emerging grammar (i.e., to render a highly marked ONC syllable ? e.g., [Sp] ? into a relatively less marked ON.ON structure ? e.g., [S.ph]).

Epicardial Ablation of Ventricular Tachycardia: a Review

        Rhanderson Cardoso,Arash Aryana,Sheldon M. Singh,Harikrishna Tandri,Andre d'Avila 대한심장학회 2018 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.48 No.9

For over 3 decades, it has been known that reentry circuits for ventricular tachycardia (VT) are not limited to the subendocardial myocardium. Rather, intramural or subepicardial substrates may also give rise to VT, particularly in those with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. Percutaneous epicardial mapping and ablation has been successfully introduced for the treatment of such subepicardial VT. Herein, we review the indications for epicardial ablation and the identification of epicardial VT by electrocardiographic and imaging modalities. We also discuss the optimal technique for epicardial access and the implications of epicardial fat which has the potential to mimic scar, decreasing the specificity of electrogram morphology and impeding energy delivery to the tissue. Finally, we also report on possible complications of the procedure and strategies to mitigate adverse events.
