        Protective enzymes and genes related to the JA pathway are involved in the response to root-knot nematodes at high soil temperatures in tomatoes carrying Mi-1

        Root-knot nematodes (RKNs; Meloidogyne spp.) are obligate endoparasites that infect a large number of crop plants and cause severe yield losses. Tomato cultivars carrying the Mi-1 gene conferring root-knot nematode resistance have been widely used, but this gene loses its effectiveness at soil temperatures above 28°C. In this study, the mechanism of the loss of resistance to RKNs at high soil temperatures was examined using LA0655 (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Anahu), which contains the Mi-1 gene. It was found that high soil temperatures delayed the expression of the Mi-1 gene and reduced the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, chitinase, and β-1,3-glucanase. Although genes in the jasmonic acid (JA) pathway exhibited an obvious response at high soil temperatures, this response could not prevent the invasion of RKNs; indeed, at 30 days after inoculation with RKNs, the plants produced large numbers of root knots and egg masses at a soil temperature of 32°C.

        Influence of Dilauroyl Peroxide on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Different Polypropylene Matrices

        In this study, the influence of dilauroyl peroxide on mechanical and thermal properties of different polypropylene (PP) matrices was investigated. Polypropylene matrices, different molecular weight isotactic PP containing 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1 wt% of dilauroyl peroxide (DLP) were prepared by using a single-screw extruder. The effect of the visbreaking agent (DLP) on mechanical, physical, thermal and morphological properties of different molecular weight PP had been studied. Mechanical properties (tensile strength at break point, at yield and elongation at break point), melt flow index (MFI), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses of these matrices were examined. Melting (Tm) and crystallization (Tc) temperatures, crystallinity ratio (%) and enthalpies were determined. The microstructure of isotactic polypropylene matrix was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From SEM analysis, it was observed that the surface disorder increased by the increasing amount of DLP. As a result of DSC analyses, the crystallinity ratio of the PP matrices has varied between 1.64-7.27%. Mechanical properties of the matrices have been improved. Particularly, the mechanical tests of PP have given interesting results when compounded with 0.06-0.08 wt% dilauroyl peroxide (DLP). Mechanical properties and thermal decomposition processes were all changed by increasing the amount of DLP in the matrix structure.

        Utilization of Waste Loquat (Eriobotrya Japonica Lindley) Kernels as Substrate for Scleroglucan Production by Locally Isolated Sclerotium rolfsii

        Present study mainly focused on investigating the feasibility of waste loquat kernels as substrate in submerged culture of Sclerotium rolfsii MT-6 for scleroglucan production. Loquat kernel contained high protein (22.5%)and total carbohydrate (71.2%) contents. Dried and powdered kernels were subjected to acid hydrolysis with 2N HCl. The obtained hydrolysate was used for the preparation of loquat kernel extract (LKE) and detoxified loquat kernel extract (DLKE). S. rolfsii MT-6 was isolated from fermented squash (Cucurbita pepo). Optimal conditions for scleroglucan production were initial pH 5.0, shaking speed 150 rpm, 28℃, and cultivation time of 72 hr. Production media prepared with DLKE or LKE gave maximum biomass concentrations of 17.06 and 16.21 g/L,and maximum scleroglucan concentrations of 12.08 and 10.53 g/L, respectively. DLKE was also favorable substrate for mycelial growth in a uniform pellet form. This is a first report on the application of waste loquat kernels as scleroglucan production substrate and on the use of a local S. rolfsii isolate for this purpose.

      • The pathogenesis and treatment of chronic allograft nephropathy

        <P>Despite improvements in immunosuppressive therapy, long-term allograft survival after kidney transplantation remains as low as 50%. Chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) is a major cause of late graft loss in renal transplant recipients. The histopathologic signs of CAN-interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, glomerulopathy and vasculopathy-are nonspecific; therefore, the 2007 Banff classification dispensed with the term CAN in favor of 'interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy without evidence of any specific etiology'. In this Review, however, the term CAN is used to describe a clinical syndrome that is characterized by progressive decline in renal function from 3 months after transplantation, accompanied by the development of proteinuria and hypertension. The pathogenesis of CAN is complex and incompletely understood, and involves several immunological and non-immunological factors. We discuss the contributory roles of acute rejection, donor age, anti-human-leukocyte-antigen antibodies, calcineurin inhibitor nephrotoxic effects, viral infection, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The prevention and treatment of CAN needs multidisciplinary strategies. Early detection by means of protocol biopsy and calculation of glomerular filtration rate is the first step, followed by management of modifiable risk factors.</P>

        The Effect of h-BN Buffer Layers in Bilayer Graphene on Co (111)

        Understanding of the interface of Co/graphene is essential for applications of graphene-based devices, as well as in the process of graphene synthesis. In this paper, the Co/graphene interface, including five structures of bilayer graphene (BLG) on Co (111) surface with bilayer or monolayer BN buffer sheets, is investigated by using density functional theory calculations. The corresponding atomic and electronic structures and Mulliken charge populations are also analyzed. The bilayer BN sheets are found to be the thinnest insulator for the backside Co metal gate, which shields BLG from Co substrate pining, decreases the charges influenced by the substrate, and improves BLG transport mobility.

      • Bandwidth Efficient Video-on-Demand Streaming Scheme based on P2P Network

        With the rapid development of Internet technologies, applications of VOD are ever increasing. If a VOD server has to transmit VOD data to extremely many people concurrently and independently by IP unicast, the server may have to suffer heavy load exceeding its capacity threshold. Recently suggested multicast and P2P (Peer-to-Peer)-based VOD approaches require additional bandwidth consumption for the management data transfer and experience occasional interrupts. This paper introduces a bandwidth efficient P2P-Based VOD approach in the application layer. The proposed approach makes use of host buffers and upstream channels of users. The new approach uses efficient peer searching, initial buffering, and dynamic monitoring of peers to maintain high QoS (Quality-of- Service). From simulation results, we achieved satisfying bandwidth efficiency and QoS.

        Chronic Cyclosporine Nephrotoxicity: New Insights and Preventive Strategices

        Cyclosporine (CsA) has improved patient and graft survival rates following solid-organ transplantation and has been increasingly applied with significant clinical benefits in the management of autoimmune diseases. However, the clinical use of CsA is often limited by acute and chronic nephrotoxicity, which remains a major problem. Acute nephrotoxicity depends on the dosage of CsA and seems to be caused by a reduction in renal blood flow related to afferent arteriolar vasoconstriction. However, the mechanisms underlying chronic CsA nephrotoxicity are not fully understood. Activation of the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system, increased release of endothelin-1, dysregulation of nitric oxide (NO) and NO synthase, upregulation of transforming growth factor-beta1, inappropriate apoptosis, stimulation of inflammatory mediators, and enhanced immunogenecity have all been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic CsA nephrotoxicity. Reducing the CsA dose or withdrawing it and using combined nephroprotective drugs (mycophenolate mofetil, losartan, and pravastatin) may ameliorate chronic CsA-induced renal injury. This review discusses new insights and preventive strategies for this clinical dilemma.

        Bandgap Engineering of Monolayer MoS2 under Strain: A DFT Study

        In this paper, density functional theory calculations are used to investigate the monolayer MoS2 in terms of the strain by analyzing the structure parameters: the bandgap, the density of states (DOS) and the Milliken charges. The calculations indicate that an increasing external stain tends to depress the ripple structure with a shorter S-S interlayer spacing and to enlarge the length of the Mo-S bond. Tensile strain dramatically alteres the bandgap; however, compressive strain almost does not. The change in the bandgap is explained by an analysis of the DOS, the partial density of states (PDOS), the structure parameters and the Mulliken charge distribution. The effects of strain on the Mulliken charge and the length of the Mo-S band cause bandgap differences under tensile and compressive strain.

        The Ruined Cottage has long been taken as the first major poetic achievement that betokens Wordsworths grow as a poet. The mainstream Wordsworthian critics appreciation of "The Ruined Cottage" as a work of art is in fact based on the implicit assumption that Wordsorths political awareness in inimical to his poetic genius, for their preference of "The Ruined Cottage" to Salisbury Plain Poems has much to do with the Pedlars distinctive narrative tactic which enables the most apolitical rendering of the most political issues at the time. This paper challenges such an underlying assumption by rereading "The Ruined Cottage" as a story of an impoverished war widow of the 1970s England. What is intended in this historically informed reading of "The ruined Cottage" is not to undermine its entirely deserving status in Wordsworthian canon but simply to remind ourselves that the seemingly natural process of Margarets moral and physical deterioration is in fact socially determined and that its original poetic appeal to the contemporary readers derived not so much from the pedlers transcendental understanding of human suffering as from Is human, sympathetic response to a war widows socially rectifiable misery. Eventually, such a reading will suggest that the modern appreciation of "The Ruined Cottage n sot just an expression of its poetic merit, but more significantly another piece of evidence that testifies to ideological orientation of the of the modern critical practice.
