        Alpha-Amylase Immobilization on Epoxy Containing Thiol-Ene Photocurable Materials

        Thiol-ene polymerization is a versatile tool for several applications. Here we report the preparation of epoxide groups containing thiol-ene photocurable polymeric support and the covalent immobilization of α-amylase onto these polymeric materials. The morphology of the polymeric support was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) coupled with SEM was used to explore the chemical composition. The polymeric support and the immobilization of the enzyme were characterized by FTIR analysis. SEM-EDS and FTIR results showed that the enzyme was successfully covalently attached to the polymeric support. The immobilization efficiency and enzyme activity of α-amylase were examined at various pH (5.0-8.0) and temperature (30-80oC) values. The storage stability and reusability of immobilized α-amylase were investigated. The immobilization yield was 276 ± 1.6 mg per gram of polymeric support. Enzyme assays demonstrated that the immobilized enzyme exhibited better thermostability than the free one. The storage stability and reusability were improved by the immobilization on this enzyme support. Free enzyme lost its activity completely within 15 days. On the other hand, the immobilized enzyme retained 86.7% of its activity after 30 days. These results confirm that α-amylase was successfully immobilized and gained a more stable character compared with the free one.

        Design and Analysis of A Modular Learning Based Cross-Coupled Control Algorithm for Multi-Axis Precision Positioning Systems

        Increasing demand for micro/nano-technology related equipment resulted in growing interest for precisionpositioning systems. In this paper a modular controller combining cross-coupled control and iterative learningcontrol approaches to improve contour and tracking accuracy at the same time is presented. Instead of using thestandard error estimation technique, a computationally efficient and modular contour error estimation techniqueis used. The new controller is more suitable for tracking arbitrary nonlinear contours and easier to implement tomulti-axis systems. Stability and convergence analysis for the proposed controller is presented with the necessaryconditions. Effectiveness of the control design is verified with simulations and experiments on a two-axis positioningsystem. The resulting positioning system achieves nanometer level contouring and tracking performance.

        Investigation of Supporting Electrolyte Effect on Supercapacitor Properties of Poly(Carbazole) Films

        In this study poly(carbazole) films deposited on stainless steel have been investigated as electrode material for supercapacitor applications. Poly(carbazole) films were electrodeposited using cyclic voltammetry in presence of lithium, sodium and tetrabutylammonium perchlorate salts. Poly(carbazole) films doped with perchlorate anions having different counter cations were characterized by SEM, ATR-FTIR and solid state conductivity measurements. Capacitive behaviours of PCz coated steel electrodes were tested by cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found that counter cation of the dopant is significantly effective on the capacitive performance on the obtained PCz films and the PCz film synthesized from lithium perchlorate has the better capacitive performance than the poly(carbazole)s synthesized from sodium perchlorate and tetrabutylammonium perchlorate salts.

        Expansion to the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire-Short Form: A Cross-Sectional Study

        Background and Objectives: The primary objective of this study is to investigate the necessity of questioning virtual reality systems in the motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire (MSSQ)-short form. The secondary objective of this study is to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the MSSQ-short form, with proven validity and reliability.Subjects and Methods: In the questionnaire form, for which expert opinion was obtained to maintain linguistic equivalence, the virtual reality items were added to the questionnaire. The questionnaire was then administered to 297 individuals. The results were statistically analyzed with and without these virtual reality items for validity and reliability.Results: After the addition of the virtual reality items, the reliability of the questionnaire was found to be quite high (Cronbach’s alpha r=0.912). The norm values between the original MSSQ-short form (12.9±9.9) and the Turkish MSSQ-short form (13.8±12.9) were found to be consistent.Conclusions: Motion sickness symptoms can occur not only during movement, but also with indirect stimulus. Our findings suggest that adding virtual reality items to the original form is important in long term practical applications. Our results show that the Turkish version of the original questionnaire is quite reliable. Submission of the MSSQ-short form in Turkish will be useful for documentation and will also encourage further research in this area.

        The Reflections of Final Year Medical Students About Nursing Home: “Loneliness and Abandonment”

        Background: Population aging is a global phenomenon with opportunities and challenges. The numbers and proportions of older people are increasing in almost every country. This study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of nursing homes among final-year medical stu-dents. Methods: This qualitative study used the word association test as a data collection tool to obtain the reflections regarding nursing homes among final-year students, and the concept of “nursing homes” was defined in face-to-face interviews of the volunteer students. Results: Analysis of data collected from 51 students regarding nursing homes resulted in five main categories (old age [frequency, f=74], positive affect emotions [f=66], negative affect emotions [f=165], loneliness [f=75], and abandonment [f=46]) based on the reflections that the term “nursing home” evoked among the students. In the pres-ent study, the final-year students primarily used more negative expressions. Conclusion: Qualitative studies with students, such as those included in the present study, can provide important clues for the development of educational curriculum and social health policies.
