Evidence map on the contributions of traditional, complementary and integrative medicines for health care in times of COVID-19

Caio Fabio Schlechta Portella,Ricardo Ghelman,Carmen Verônica Mendes Abdala,Mariana Cabral Schveitzer 한국한의학연구원 2020 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.9 No.3

Background: Due to the pandemic, there is a significant interest in the therapeutic resources linked to TCIM to support potentially therapeutic research and intervention in the management of Coronavirus - 19 (COVID-19). At the date of this evidence map´s publication, there is no evidence of specific treatments for COVID-19. This map organizes information about symptoms management (especially on dimensions related to mental health and mild viral respiratory infections, as well as immune system strengthening and antiviral activity). Method: This evidence map applies methodology developed by Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information based on the 3iE evidence gap map. A search was performed in the Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine Virtual Health Library and PubMed, using the MeSH and DeCS terms for respiratory viral diseases associated with epidemics, COVID-19 symptoms, relevant mental health topics, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions related to TCIM. Results: For the map, 126 systematic reviews and controlled clinical studies were characterized, distributed in a matrix with 62 interventions (18 phytotherapy, 9 mind-body therapies, 11 traditional Chinese medicine, 7 homeopathic and anthroposophic dynamized medicines and 17 supplements), and 67 outcomes (14 immunological response, 23 mental health, 25 complementary clinical management of the infection and 5 other). Conclusion: The map presents an overview of possible TCIM contributions to various dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the field of mental health, and it is directed to researchers and health professionals specialized in TCIM. Most of the antiviral activity outcomes described in this map refers to respiratory viruses in general, and not specifically to SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2). This information may be useful to guide new research, but not necessarily to support a therapeutic recommendation. Finally, any suspicion of COVID-19 infection should follow the protocols recommended by the health authorities of each country/region.

Carcass characteristics of lambs fed diets with increasing levels of crude glycerin

Caio Alves da Costa,Francisco Fernando Ramos de Carvalho,Adriana Guim,Gilcifran Prestes de Andrade,Daniel Barros Cardoso,Michel do Vale Maciel,Gabriela Goncalves da Silva,Andreza Guedes de Oliveira Na 아세아·태평양축산학회 2019 Animal Bioscience Vol.32 No.12

Objective: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of crude glycerin (0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%) used as a substitute for corn in lamb feed on the quantitative characteristics of the carcass. Methods: A total of 40 crossbred Santa Inês lambs that were four months old with a mean initial weight of 21.0±0.8 kg were randomly distributed in four treatments with ten replicates. The animals were slaughtered after 66 days of confinement. The effects of crude glycerin as a replacement for corn in the diet of the lambs on the carcass characteristics, commercial cut weight and yield and carcass measurements were studied. Results: There was an increasing linear effect for body weight at slaughter with the replacement of corn by crude glycerin. The dry matter and metabolizable energy intakes, weight of the empty body, hot carcass weight and cold carcass weight showed a quadratic effect, with maximum crude glycerin levels estimated at 10.9%, 9.8%, 10.83%, 11.78%, and 11.35%, respectively. The initial pH was not influenced by the replacement of corn for crude glycerin, while the final pH presented a quadratic effect. The other parameters of the carcass and the weights and yields of commercial cuts were not influenced. There was also no effect of the diets on carcass morphometric measurements, except for the thoracic perimeter and the carcass compactness index, which presented quadratic and linear effects, respectively. Conclusion: Crude glycerin can replace up to 18% of corn because it favours muscle tissue deposition without promoting changes in the main carcass characteristics of lambs.

The therapeutic efficacy of Qigong exercise on the main symptoms of fibromyalgia: a pilot randomized clinical trial

        Caio V.M. Sarmento,Sanghee Moon,Taylor Pfeifer,Irina V. Smirnova,Yvonne Colgrove,Sue Min Lai,Wen Liu 한국한의학연구원 2020 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.9 No.4

Background: Some of the most debilitating symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM) include widespread chronic pain, sleep disturbances, chronic fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Yet, there is a lack of effective self-management exercise interventions capable of alleviating FM symptoms. The objective of this study is to examine the efficacy of a 10-week daily Qigong, a mind–body intervention program, on FM symptoms. Methods: 20 participants with FM were randomly assigned to Qigong (experimental) or sham-Qigong (control) groups, with participants blinded to the intervention allocation. The Qigong group practiced mild body movements synchronized with deep diaphragmatic breathing and meditation. The sham-Qigong group practiced only mild body movements. Both groups practiced the interventions two times per day at home, plus one weekly group practice session with a Qigong instructor. Primary outcomes were: pain changes measured by the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire, a visual analog scale for pain, pressure pain threshold measured by a dolorimeter. Secondary outcomes were: the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Quality of Life Scale. Results: The experimental group experienced greater clinical improvements when compared to the control group on the mean score differences of pain, sleep quality, chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, and fibromyalgia impact, all being statistically significant at p < 0.05. Conclusion: Daily practice of Qigong appears to have a positive impact on the main fibromyalgia symptoms that is beyond group interaction. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03441997.

2D/3D Numerical Analyses of Corrosion Initiation in RC Structures Accounting Fluctuations of Chloride Ions by External Actions

Enrico Zacchei,Caio Gorla Nogueira 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.25 No.6

The diffusion of chloride ions in reinforced concrete (RC) varies in space and time, depending on many uncertain factors as material properties, temperature, aging, humidity and external loadings. In this paper, the goals are to provide different scenarios to probabilistic assessing of the corrosion initiation time and chloride ions content inside concrete considering different fluctuations. For the former, stochastic analyses helps to estimate the service life in RC; for the latter, the focus is on the nature of loading variation due to location and structural constraints that usually are not considered. The approach consist in studying the trend of chloride ion particles regarding the action of the external loadings by incorporating a function with random values. The governing equations are modified to account for the non-constant diffusivity under transient conditions. Results show that the chloride content for random diffusivity assumes lower values than for constant diffusivity. Moreover, in 2D analysis the chloride content is lesser of 78% than in 3D analysis.

Life table of Xylocoris afer (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) feeding on eggs of Corcyra cephalonica (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)

Natalia Fernanda Vieira,Caio Cesar Truzi,Ana Carolina Pires Veiga,Thamiris Porto Sipriano-Nascimento,Alessandra Marieli Vacari,Sergio Antonio De Bortoli 한국응용곤충학회 2018 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.21 No.4

The aim was to evaluate the biological aspects of Xylocoris afer fed on Corcyra cephalonica and Plutella xylostella eggs. The experiment was conducted with X. afer nymphs aged 12–24 h, one per Petri dish, resulting in a total of 60 nymphs (60 repetitions). On each dish, we placed P. xylostella and C. cephalonica eggs daily, together with a cotton roll moistened with distilled water and conducted daily evaluations. We evaluated the duration, viability, and consumption of nymphal stages, the longevity of males and females, the number of eggs per female, and egg fertility. In addition, the biological data were used to determine the parameters of the fertility life table. The consumption by adults (male and female) of X. afer differed between the preys, the highest consumption was C. cephalonica eggs. Females that consumed eggs of C. cephalonica produced about 90% more eggs and more offspring than those that fed on P. xylostella eggs. Based on our results, it can be inferred that the predator completed its development feeding both on natural prey and the alternative, evidencing the possible potential of X. afer to be used in the biological control of P. xylostella as well as the use of C. cephalonica in mass rearing of this predator under laboratory conditions, aiming its use in applied biological control. However, before being accepted for biological control agent against agricultural pests, various factors should be examined in ecosystem level, as the behavior of predator in different densities of prey.

      • Injuries among Brazilian male Jiu-Jitsu athletes

Giovanna Medina,Breno Schor,Caio Oliveira D'Elia,Antonio Guilherme Padovani Gar,Alexandre Carneiro Bitar,Juliana Mauad,Wagner Castropil 국제무예학회 2023 International Journal of Martial Arts Vol.8 No.-

The purpose of this study was to describe the injuries related to the practice and competition of Jiu-Jitsu (JJ) in Brazil. Athletes answered a survey regarding previous injuries sustained during training or competition that resulted in missing practice or competition for at least one week. One hundred and fifteen male athletes were included (mean age 30.2). A total of 415 injuries were recorded. The number of injuries sustained by each athlete ranged from 0-12 (mean of 3.6). Knee was the most affected site (18.8%), followed by the shoulder girdle (15.9%), ankle (12.3%), and hand (11%). Sprain was the most common diagnosis (31.3%). Traumatic causes were responsible for approximately 70% of the injuries. Results indicated a positive correlation between number of injuries and years JJ practice (p < 0.001), age (p < 0.01), belt graduation (p < 0.001) and level of competition (p < 0.001). In conclusion, most injuries are acute traumatic musculoskeletal injuries to the knee and shoulder, and both time exposure and intensity of JJ practice are risk factors.

Effects of Consumption of Coconut and Cow's Milk on the Metabolic Profile of Wistar Rats Fed a Hyperprotein Diet

Beatriz Nomada Hauy,Caio Henrique Peres Oliani,Gabriela Garcia Fracaro,Sandra Maria Barbalho,Élen Landgraf Guiguer,Maricelma da Silva Soares de Souza,Claudemir Gregório Mendes,Manoela dos Santos Bueno 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.2

The intake of milk has decreased over the past few decades in Western populations and has been replaced by drinks of plant origin. Substitution of cow's milk by vegetable drinks occurs for some reasons, such as the presence of lactose intolerance, reduced calorie intake, prevention of obesity, vegan diets, and concern about the use of hormone therapy and its possible residues in bovine milk. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to evaluate the biochemical and anthropometric profile of animals subjected to a diet supplemented with coconut milk. Animals were divided into six groups (G1–G6), treated, respectively, regular diet and coconut milk or cow's milk, and with a high-protein content diet and coconut milk or cow's milk. Our results showed that the animals treated with coconut milk reduced body weight and visceral fat, and also showed that the use of a high-protein diet in association with coconut milk is a good combination in reducing visceral fat, percentage of weight gain, food intake, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Our results do not show substantial metabolic changes when comparing the use of coconut milk with the use of cow's milk (we cannot say that the coconut milk itself can be better than cow's milk in the evaluated metabolic parameters).

Maternal uterine artery Doppler in the first and second trimesters as screening method for hypertensive disorders and adverse perinatal outcomes in low-risk pregnancies

( Rosiane Maciel Scandiuzzi ),( Caio Antonio De Campos Prado ),( Edward Araujo Junior ),( Geraldo Duarte ),( Silvana Maria Quintana ),( Fabricio Da Silva Costa ),( Gabriele Tonni ),( Ricardo De Carval 대한산부인과학회 2016 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.59 No.5

Objective To assess the maternal demographic characteristics and uterine artery (UA) Doppler parameters at first and second trimesters of pregnancy as predictors for hypertensive disorders (HDs) and adverse perinatal outcomes. Methods This prospective cohort study comprised 162 singleton low-risk women undergoing routine antenatal care. The left and right UA were assessed by color and pulsed Doppler and the mean pulsatility and resistance indices as well as the presence of a bilateral protodiastolic notch were recorded at 11 to 14 and 20 to 24 weeks’ gestation. Multilevel regression analysis was used to determine the effects of maternal characteristics and abnormal UA Doppler parameters on the incidence of HD, small for gestational age newborn, cesarean section rate, Apgar score <7 at 1st and 5th minute, and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit. Results Fifteen women (9.2%) developed HD. UA mean resistance index (RI), UA mean pulsatility index, and parity were independent predictors of HD. Compared to the pregnancies with a normal UA mean RI at the first and second trimesters, pregnancies with UA mean RI >95th percentile only at the first trimester showed an increased risk for HD (odds ratio, 23.25; 95% confidence interval, 3.47 to 155.73; P<0.01). Similar result was found for UA mean pulsatility index >95th percentile (odds ratio, 9.84; 95% confidence interval, 1.05 to 92.10; P=0.05). The model including maternal age, maternal and paternal ethnicity, occupation, parity and UA mean RI increased the relative risk for HD (area under receiver operating characteristics, 0.81). Conclusion A first-trimester screening combining maternal characteristics and UA Doppler parameters is useful to predict HD in a low-risk population.

Chlorhexidine gel associated with papain in pulp tissue dissolution

Matheus Melo Pithon,Gabriel Couto De Oliveira,Caio Souza Ferraz,Carlos Vieira Andrade Júnior 대한치과보존학회 2013 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.38 No.4

Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of 2% chlorhexidine gel associated with 8% papain gel in comparison with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite in bovine pulp tissue dissolution. Materials and Methods Ninety bovine pulps of standardized sizes were used and fragmented into 5-mm sizes. The fragments were removed from the root middle third region. They were divided into 6 experimental groups (n = 15), 1) 8% papain; 2) 2% chlorhexidine; 3) 2% chlorhexidine associated with 8% papain; 4) 0.9% saline solution; 5) 2.5% sodium hypochlorite; and 6) 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. The pulp fragments were weighed and put into immobile test tubes for dissolution for time intervals of 30, 60, 90, and 120 min. Results The 5.25% sodium hypochlorite had greater dissolution potential than the pure papain, and when associated with chlorhexidine, both promoted greater dissolution than did the saline solution and 2% chlorhexidine groups (p < 0.05). The 2.5% sodium hypochlorite promoted dissolution to a lesser extent than the groups with papain within a period of 30 min (p < 0.05), but, was comparable to the saline solution and chlorhexidine. After 120 min, the 2.5% and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite promoted dissolution of 100% of the pulp fragments, and papain, 61%, while chlorhexidine associated with papain and chlorhexidine alone dissolved only 55% and 3%, respectively. Conclusions The 8% papain in gel, both alone and in association with chlorhexidine, was able to dissolve bovine pulp tissue, but to a lesser extent than did 5.25% sodium hypochlorite.
