A Re-examination of German Government Approval and Economic Performance: Is There a Stable Relationship between Them?

This paper studies the stability between the government approval and macroeconomic series for Germany during 1977-2004 allowing structural breaks. We first execute traditional cointegration tests without breaks, and the results reveal weak evidence of a link between the political and economic variables. However, using Hansen's (1992) tests for parameter instability suggest that such a relationship between politics and economy may be unstable. After allowing for the structural breaks in the series and conducting Gregory and Hansen's (1996) cointegration test, we find that a clear cointegrated relationship undoubtedly exists between approval rates and macroeconomics; we discover that some events indeed affect the government's popularity. Overall, once we locate structural breakpoints, such as when the West German government was succeeded by Helmut Kohl in 1982, then we begin to distinguish the actual cointegrated relationships between the approval rate of government and macroeconomics before and after the structural breakpoint.

Non-holistic Meaning Anatomism and the No-Principled-Basis Consideration

Jerry Fodor and Ernest Lepore (1999/2002) frame the debate over meaning holism in terms of a distinction between meaning atomism and meaning anatomism. The former holds that the meaning of an expression E is determined by some relation between E and some extra-linguistic entity. The latter holds that the meaning of E is at least partly determined by some of E’s “inward” relations (IRs) with other expressions in the very language. They (1992) argue that meaning anatomism inevitably collapses into meaning holism, which is the view that the meaning of E is determined by E’s IRs with every other expression in the very language because there is no principled distinction for the anatomist to divide the meaning-determining IRs from the non-meaning-determining ones. In response, the non-holistic anatomist urges that Fodor and Lepore’s no-principled-basis consideration is groundless because the lack of a generally accepted criterion for such a distinction does not undermine the viability of the distinction itself. While this point is well taken, I think that Fodor and Lepore are onto an important question here. That is, what does it make non-holistic anatomism distinctive from its holistic counterpart if without a principled basis for the distinction among IRs? I look into this question and give an alternative argument from Fodor and Lepore’s to suggest that non-holistic anatomism cannot bypass the no-principled-basis consideration. The non-holistic anatomist will need a principled distinction in kind between IRs to back her point.

PREPARATION OF CISPLATIN COMPOSITE MICRO/NANOFIBERS AND ANTITUMOR ACTIVITY IN VITRO AGAINST HUMAN TUMOR spc-a-1 CELLS

In this paper, the cisplatin composite micro/nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning. Average diameter of the typical products was about 700 nm, and cisplatins were incorporated in biodegradable poly (L-lactic acid) fibers. The controlled release of cisplatin can be gained for long time. The possible mechanisms of cisplatin release in the PBS and the PBS with proteinase K were discussed. 3-(4, 5)-dimethylthiahiazo-(-z-y1)-3, 5-di-phenytetrazoliumromide (MTT) method was used to test antitumor activities in vitro against human lung tumor spc-a-1 cells. When incubation time was 24 h, the same content of cisplatin from virgin cisplatin and the composite fibers has almost equal antitumor activity in vitro. However, when incubation time was 48 h, the composite fibers show much higher antitumor activity than the virgin cisplatin. The system may be useful in the postoperative local chemotherapy and have clinical applications as an implantable drug for tumor in the future.

Globalization and Economic Growth: A Political Economy Analysis for OECD Countries

Globalization is commonly defined as a strict economic path by most previous works, but it is really a fuzzy concept with unrestrained dimensions. While the ideological location of an incumbent political party is a powerful predictor of its policy position, the role of a political party in the globalization-growth nexus has never been fully empirically investigated. By applying Pedroni’s panel cointegration technique instead of a time-series or traditional panel data approach, this paper aims to empirically re-examine the co-movement and the causal relationship among economic growth, the overall globalization index, and its three main dimensions* economic, social, as well as political integrations*by using panel data for 23 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries for 1970 to 2006. Certainly, the political party variable is taken into account as the advanced test is promoted, and we finally discover that all variables move together in the long run. Based on the results of the panel causality test, though the evidence of short-run causality is very weak, it does show long-run unidirectional causality running from the overall index of globalization, economic globalization, and social globalization to growth. Finally, the critical role of the political party is deeply discussed in relation with our results.

Influence of synthetic polymers on the mechanical properties of hardened b-calcium sulfate hemihydrate plasters

Polymers have been used to modulate mechanical strengths and water absorption of construction ormodeling materials as like gypsum. To understand the structure–performance relationship of polymersin hydration and properties of gypsum plaster, several designed carboxyl polyether sulfonates wereinvestigated with comparison of some commercial polymers. It is found that bending strength of thehardened b-hemihydrate plaster is inversely proportional to number of carboxyl groups in the polymerthat retards hydration. The mechanical strengths enhancement is coincident with acceleration of initialhydration, while decrease of mechanical strengths happened with retard of the hydration.

Globalization, Real Output and Multiple Structural Breaks

This paper adopts an advanced panel cointegration method which incorporates multiple structural breaks to examine the long-run relationship between real output (RGDP) and the Konjunkturforschungsstelle (KOF) index of globalization (overall and its three main subindices), employing annual data of G7 countries from 1970 to 2006. Our empirical findings provide strong evidence that overall globalization and its social dimension are cointegrated with RGDP, and most of the structural break points are discovered during the period of the oil crisis (the mid-1970s) and the process of European Union integration. In addition, in evaluating whether or not the structural breaks affect the RGDP through globalization, we discover that both the overall globalization index and the social globalization index have a directly positive impact on RGDP but indirectly exhibit negative impacts on real output via the channel of social globalization.

Development of AFLP and SCAR Markers Linked to a Recessive Genic Male Sterile Gene (Bnms3) in Rapeseed for Marker-assisted Selection

9012AB is a recessive genic male sterility (RGMS) line in rapeseed, of which the male sterility is controlled by two pairs of recessive duplicate male sterile genes (Bnms3 and Bnms4) interacting with a recessive epistatic suppressor gene (esp). The recessive homozygosity at the esp locus (espesp) can suppress the expression of the recessive male sterility trait in homozygous plants (Bnms3Bnms3Bnms4Bnms4) and result in fertility restoration. A F2 population of 188 plants, derived from self-pollinated progenies of a 9012 AB fertile plants (BnMs3Bnms3Bnms4Bnms4EspEsp), was conducted to identify molecular markers linked to the recessive male sterility gene (Bnms3). By amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) assay combining with bulked segregant analysis (BSA), 13 markers linked to Bnms3 were identified. Linkage analysis indicated that 13 AFLP markers were tightly linked to the Bnms3 gene with a genetic distance varying from 1.3 cM to 7.1 cM. Among them, one marker was co-dominant marker, 6 markers were in coupling phase with Bnms3, and the others were in repulsion phase with Bnms3 gene, One AFLP marker with a genetic distance of 1.4cM was further converted into a SCAR marker successfully, which have been applied in marker-assisted selection of RGMS lines and their temporary maintainers effectively.

Comparative Analysis of Water Stress-Responsive Transcriptomes in Drought-Susceptible and -Tolerant Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

To understand better the mechanisms that regulate the water stress response in wheat, we conducted a comparative analysis of transcript profiles in roots from two wheat genotypes -- drought-tolerant ‘Luohan No. 2’ (LH)and drought-susceptible ‘Chinese Spring’ (CS). In LH roots,3831 transcripts displayed changes in expression of at least two-fold over the well-watered control when drought treatment was applied. Of these, 1593 were induced while 2238 were repressed. Relatively fewer transcripts were drought-responsive in CS; i.e., 1404 transcripts were induced and 1493 were repressed. In common between LH and CS,569 transcripts were induced and 424 transcripts were repressed. In all, 689 transcripts (757 probe sets) identified from LH and 537 transcripts (575 probe sets) from CS were annotated and classified into 10 functional categories. Among those annotated transcripts from LH and CS that had fold-change ratios of at least 4, 92 induced transcripts were common to both, while 23 transcripts were specifically induced in LH. Gene ontology analysis of these induced genes showed highly significant enrichment for multiple terms related to abiotic stimuli, organic acid biosynthesis,and lipid metabolism. This suggests that these gene groups play important roles during the stress response in LH and CS, and might also be responsible for differences in drought tolerance between those genotypes.

Some coordinates and geodetic datums, which are usually used in our work and research, are discussed in this paper. There are two methods were developed to convers the space data and merits and demerits of each method were discussed as well.
