China’s Natural Resource Appetite in Brazil
Sigfrido Burgos Caceres,Sophal Ear 한국라틴아메리카학회 2011 라틴아메리카연구 Vol.24 No.2
This essay deals with the many connections between Brazil and China, as it examines the fundamental drivers of this accretive friendship. Brazil, like China, is a rapidly growing economic giant with a large resource base. Brazil has experienced an average growth of 7 per cent and China of 10 per cent. These growth rates require large amounts of energy sources, natural resources and raw materials. Both countries are positioned to benefit from increased rapprochement: China needs Brazil to supplement its rising commodities needs, and Brazil needs China to finance its industrial and manufacturing investments. Today, China is Brazil’s leading trade partner, replacing the United States and emerging as a viable ally at a time of waning hegemonic control. As large oil deposits lie 150 miles off the Brazilian coast, China is attentive to Brazil’s wishes, as well as to its desires to rightly develop the trillion dollar oil boom that is currently taking place.

Cephalopods, in particular octopus (Octopus vulgaris), have the ability to alter their appearance or body pattern by showing a wide range of camouflage by virtue of their chromatophores, which contain nanostructured granules of ommochrome pigments. Recently, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of ommochromes have become of great interest; therefore, in this study, the pH-dependent redox effect of the extraction solvent on the antioxidant potential and the structural characterization of the pigments were evaluated. Cell viability was determined by the microdilution method in broth by turbidity, MTT, resazurin, as well as fluorescence microscopy kit assays. A Live/ Dead Double Staining Kit and an ROS Kit were used to elucidate the possible inhibitory mechanisms of ommochromes against bacterial and fungal strains. The results obtained revealed that the redox state alters the color changes of the ommochromes and is dependent on the pH in the extraction solvent. Natural phenoxazinone (ommochromes) is moderately toxic to the pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella Typhimurium and Candida albicans, while the species Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens, and the filamentous fungi Aspergillus parasiticus, Alternaria spp. and Fusarium verticillioides, were tolerant to these pigments. UV/visible spectral scanning and Fourier- transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) suggest the presence of reduced ommatin in methanol/ HCl extract with high intrinsic fluorescence.

Simulation has shown good results in medical scenarios in which the patient’s problem can be solved by following protocols previously established in clinical practice guidelines. Therefore, the implementation of simulation programs in neurocritical care improves the outcomes of patients at clinical centers because a properly trained professional will be able to provide the most effective care in the shortest time possible, safeguarding the patient’s life. Some learning and simulation models that can be included in medical education to improve neurocritical vascular care include task trainers, full-body mannequins, standardized patients, and computer-based simulation. Specifically, medical simulation in academic training programs in health sciences has a great impact on the development of specific skills, which could potentially reduce medical-legal and economic issues, improve care, and result in the management of clinical events. Simulation is established as an essential educational tool, allowing the instruction of knowledge from an interactive perspective and offering a broader vision when it comes to medical practice. The objective of this article is to present evidence related to the usefulness and impact of medical simulation in neurovascular critical care education.

This paper presents a hybrid modulation method to limit the neutral point (NP) voltage ripple and reduce the requirement for dc link capacitors during the startup process for three level motor drive systems. The neutral point voltage calculation model is presented to study the large NP voltage ripple for three level modulation during the startup process. Moreover, the possible overvoltage issue on the semiconductors considering the different switching speed of the devices for two level modulation in three level NPC converters is analyzed in detail. To avoid such overvoltage on the semiconductors, zero neutral point voltage ripple modulation (ZNPVR) method is proposed to limit the NP voltage ripple when the output fundamental frequency is low. The implementation method of the proposed method is discussed in detail. When the output fundamental frequency is high, the modulation can smoothly transit to normal NTSV modulation for lower current ripple and higher efficiency. Both simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the analysis based on a 3 kW three level VSI dc-fed motor drive system.
