        How predictive are temporal lobe changes of underlying TDP-43 pathology in the ALS-FTD continuum?

        Detection of underling proteinopathies is becoming increasingly important across neurodegenerative conditions due to upcoming disease intervention trials. In this review, we explored how temporal lobe changes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) can potentially predict underlying TDP-43 pathology subtypes in FTD. To date, emphasis has been given to frontal lobe changes in the study of the cognitive and behavioural impairments in both syndromes but an increasing number of pathological, imaging and neuropsychological studies suggest how temporal lobe changes could critically affect the cognition and behaviour of these conditions. In this current article, we reviewed pathological, imaging as well as clinical/neuropsychological findings of temporal involvement in the ALS-FTD continuum, how they relate to temporal lobe changes and the underlying TDP-43 pathology in FTD. Findings across studies show that TDP-43 pathology occurs and coincides in many structures in ALS and FTD, but especially in the temporal lobes. In particular, anterior and medial temporal lobes atrophy is consistently found in ALS and FTD. In addition, memory and language impairment as well as emotional and Theory of Mind processing deficits that are characteristics of the two diseases are highly correlated to temporal lobe dysfunction. We conclude by showing that temporal lobe changes due to TDP-43 type B might be particular predictive of TDP-43 type B pathology in behavioural variant FTD, which clearly needs to be investigated further in the future.

        Prospects for a New Regional Order in Northeast Asia

        An expected utility model is used to predict the likely structure of security arrangements in the Northeast Asia region and to evaluate the prospects for cross-recognition and South Korean entry into the United Nations as a full member. We find that the Soviet Union, knowing it will be difficult to form such a security and cooperation structure as the CSCE in a short period of time, will try to conclude a bilateral friendship and cooperation treaty .with each Northeast Asian nation. The United States is not expected to change its Northeast Asia policy. We found that even if the Soviets would drop their stance on multilateral negotiations in Northeast Asia and de-nuclearization of the peninsula, this would not alter the structure of the newly emerging regional order in Northeast Asia. The United States cannot afford the luxury of a unilateral withdrawal from the security negotiation process. Its position is pivotal. The Soviet Union and China are expected to support Seoul`s bid to enter the United Nations. We find that Moscow and Beijing perceive the expected cost of defecting from one of the Koreas to exceed the expected benefit of helping the other Korea. Neither is likely to veto a South Korean entry because each perceives greater benefits than costs from cooperating with the South`s entry. We also forecast Korean cross-recognition. Finally, the predicted new regional order in Northeast Asia favors a weak conference setting that includes both Koreas. The weak conference setting is not expected to have a formalized status such as the CSCE. A Soviet- supported Asian collective security system is unlikely within the current political context. We expect progress toward the expansion of bilateral relations into all pairs of countries concerned.

        Effects of Different Dietary Vitamin E Levels on Growth Performance, Non-specific Immune Responses, and Disease Resistance against Vibrio anguillarum in Parrot Fish (Oplegnathus fasciatus)

        We report nutritional physiology and non-specific immune responses of vitamin E in parrot fish for the first time. This study aimed to investigate the essentiality and requirements in diets based on growth performances, non-specific immune responses and a challenge test against Vibrio angullarum. Six casein-gelatin based semi-purified diets were formulated to contain six graded levels of DL-${\alpha}$-tocopheryl acetate (${\alpha}$-TA) at 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 500 mg/kg diet (designated as E0, E25, E50, E75, E100 and E500, respectively) and fed to triplicate groups of juvenile parrot fish for 12 weeks. The analyzed dietary concentrations of vitamin E were 0, 38, 53, 87, 119 and 538 mg/kg diet for E0, E25, E50, E75, E100 and E500, respectively. At the end of the feeding trial, growth performance and feed utilization of fish fed the E25 were significantly higher compared to that of fish fed the other diets. Liver ${\alpha}$-tocopherol concentration was significantly increased with an increase in dietary ${\alpha}$-TA in a dose dependent manner. No apparent clinical signs of vitamin E deficiency and mortality were observed in fish fed the basal diet for 12 weeks. Among the immune responses assayed, phagocytic (NBT assay) and myeloperoxidase activities were significantly increased with increment of dietary ${\alpha}$-TA levels. During the challenge test with V. anguillarum, E75, E100, and E500 diets resulted in higher survivals than E0, E25 and E50 diets. The findings of this study suggest that parrot fish require exogenous vitamin E and the optimum dietary level could be approximately 38 mg ${\alpha}$-TA/kg diet for normal growth and physiology. Dietary ${\alpha}$-TA concentration over 500 mg/kg could be required to enhance the nonspecific immune responses and improve the resistance of juvenile parrot fish against V. anguillarum.

      • Evolution of ICTs in Peru and Key factors for its Development Under the Korean Model

        ICTs are playing a vital role in the effort to alleviate poverty and promote local development. ICTs provide access to information that can create opportunities to generate income, improve access to basic services, or increase the impact of interventions in education and health. South Korea is a global leader in ICTs. Literature review explains that in the case of this Asian country, short and long term strategies were established with concrete objectives. Political will and leadership, suitable resource distribution, and timely feedback were also key factors in Korea’s success. The review of those elements applied in a Peruvian context show us the feasibility to improve the current situation in the country. The author provides a first look of opportunities, problems, and ways to overcome those challenges, opening discussions for further research.

      • Current situation and challenges of ICTs in local government of Peru

        In 1994 the Red Cientifica Peruana (Peruvian Scientific Network) opened the first center for public internet access in Peru, but is in 1997 when begins the massification in the public sector, as other countries in the region the first use was limited to the exchange of information files and later through the creation of institutional portals. The last UN study on electronic government development ranked Peru in the position 82°, and seventh among twelve countries of South America. Also it is curious that comparing countries with similar levels of development (measured by gdp per capita) Peru is also located in the last positions. The results of the analysis of various factors such as internet access, information content and responsiveness of local governments using information technologies explain the reasons why the Andean country still “not taking off” the improve of electronic government and specially in the less favored regions.

        Colorimetric Analysis of the Stability of Annatto Dye in Solution and Its Use in the Dyeing of Polyester Fibers

        Due to the large amount of toxic effluents generated by the textile industry using most of synthetic dyes, naturaldyes are increasingly gaining prominence, in keeping with the global trend toward prioritizing the use of cleanertechnologies. However, the application of natural dyes is still restricted, mainly due to their instability in solution and poorfixation onto textile substrates. Thus, research is required to improve the performance of these dyes in order to obtainproducts with the characteristics desired by the industry. In this study, the potential of natural annatto dye in the dyeing ofpolyester (PES) fiber was analyzed and the color and stability parameters in solution were evaluated through twoexperiments. Initially, the stability of the natural annatto dye in solution was determined under different conditions oftemperature, pH, and dye concentration and the application of this dye in conventional PES fiber dyeing was investigated. Subsequently, the influence of the use of a carrier in the dyeing of PES fiber was evaluated. The results indicated that thevariables with the greatest effect on the degradation of the dye are temperature and pH. The natural annatto dye showed goodinteraction with the PES fiber in the conventional dyeing process, presenting good results of color yield and levels of fastness. In the dyeing processes conducted with and without a carrier, the dyeing performed in the latter provided better results, withthe advantage of allowing the application of lower temperatures.

        Nutrition and yield of hydroponic arugula under inoculation of beneficial microorganisms

        The use of benefi cial fungi and bacteria can improve growth, yield and food quality of plants. The electrical conductivity (EC) of a nutrient solution is closely linked to better nutrition of arugula plants in a hydroponic system. Therefore, objectives of current study were to evaluate isolated and combined eff ect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and Trichoderma hazianum under two ECs on root-shoot biomass, nutrition and yield of arugula in hydroponic cultivation system. The experi- ment was designed in a strip-plot block with fi ve replications in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme. The treatments were consisted of four microbial inoculations (without, A. brasilense, T. harzianum and co-inoculation of both) and two ECs (1.4 and 1.6 dS m −1). The higher EC with A. brasilense inoculation provided greater growth of arugula plants in a hydroponic system. Inoculation with A. brasilense has increased leaf area, shoot–root length, leaf chlorophyll index (LCI) and shoot ammonium accumulation while reduced root-shoot nitrate accumulation. The leaf nutrition or biofortifi cation of arugula plants with K, S, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Mn was improved under both isolated and combined inoculations of A. brasilense and T. harzianum .
