• Adsorption on alumina nanopores with conical shape

        Bruschi, Lorenzo,Mistura, Giampaolo,Negri, Fabrizia,Coasne, Benoit,Mayamei, Yashar,Lee, Woo The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Nanoscale Vol.10 No.38

Adsorption on porous solids depends on the morphology of the pores, the cylindrical one being the most studied in the literature. In this work, we present the first experimental investigation of adsorption and evaporation on conical nanopores produced by anodization of aluminium oxide. The pores are about 50 μm long, with the wide ends having a diameter of ∼79 nm and the narrow ones of ∼30 nm. Three different pores configurations are considered: open at both ends, open only at the narrow end and open only at the wide end. Despite the very small value of the conical angle α, estimated to be ∼0.06°, just barely above α = 0° corresponding to a cylindrical pore, the adsorption isotherms look strikingly different from those measured on cylindrical pores of similar size. First of all, the hysteresis loops of the conical pores with two open ends and with open wide ends practically coincide. Furthermore, they are narrower and the adsorption and evaporation branches are broader than those of the cylindrical pores with similar size. Finally, conical pores with open narrow ends exhibit a large hysteresis indicative of pore blocking. To unravel the mechanisms underlying adsorption and evaporation in such conical pores, we also report complementary results obtained using on-lattice grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations.

      • Adsorption on Highly Ordered Porous Alumina

        Mistura, G.,Bruschi, L.,Lee, W. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Journal of low temperature physics Vol.185 No.1

Porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) is characterized by a regular arrangement of the pores with a narrow pore size distribution over extended areas, uniform pore depth, and solid pore walls without micropores. Thanks to significant improvements in anodization techniques, structural engineering of AAO allows to accurately tailor the pore morphology. These features make porous AAO an excellent substrate to study adsorption phenomena. In this paper, we review recent experiments involving the adsorption in porous AAO. Particular attention will be devoted to adsorption in straight and structured pores with a closed end which shed new light on fundamental issues like the origin of hysteresis in closed end pores and the nature of evaporation from ink-bottle pores. The results will be compared to those obtained in other synthetic materials like porous silicon and silica.

Hierarchical Power Management Architecture and Optimal Local Control Policy for Energy Efficient Networks

Wei, Yifei,Wang, Xiaojun,Fialho, Leonardo,Bruschi, Roberto,Ormond, Olga,Collier, Martin The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2016 Journal of communications and networks Vol.18 No.4

Since energy efficiency has become a significant concern for network infrastructure, next-generation network devices are expected to have embedded advanced power management capabilities. However, how to effectively exploit the green capabilities is still a big challenge, especially given the high heterogeneity of devices and their internal architectures. In this paper, we introduce a hierarchical power management architecture (HPMA) which represents physical components whose power can be monitored and controlled at various levels of a device as entities. We use energy aware state (EAS) as the power management setting mode of each device entity. The power policy controller is capable of getting information on how many EASes of the entity are manageable inside a device, and setting a certain EAS configuration for the entity. We propose the optimal local control policy which aims to minimize the router power consumption while meeting the performance constraints. A first-order Markov chain is used to model the statistical features of the network traffic load. The dynamic EAS configuration problem is formulated as a Markov decision process and solved using a dynamic programming algorithm. In addition, we demonstrate a reference implementation of the HPMA and EAS concept in a NetFPGA frequency scaled router which has the ability of toggling among five operating frequency options and/or turning off unused Ethernet ports.

Textural Evolution During Micro Direct Metal Deposition of NiTi Alloy

        Saeed Khademzadeh,Paolo F. Bariani,Stefania Bruschi 대한금속·재료학회 2018 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.24 No.4

In this research, a micro direct metal deposition process, newly developed as a potential method for micro additive manufacturingwas used to fabricate NiTi builds. The Effect of scanning strategy on grain growth and textural evolution wasinvestigated using scanning electron microscope equipped with electron backscattered diff raction detector. Investigationsshowed that, the angle between the successive single tracks has an important role in grain size distribution and texturalevolution of NiTi phase. Unidirectional laser beam scanning pattern developed a fi ber texture; conversely, a backward andforward scanning pattern developed a strong ⟨100⟩ ‖‖ RD texture on the surface of NiTi cubic samples produced by microdirect metal deposition.

‘Z-trip’? A Comprehensive Overview and a Case-series of Zolpidem Misuse

        Laura Orsolini,Stefania Chiappini,Paolo Grandinetti,Angelo Bruschi,Roberta Testa,Alessandra Provenzano,Domenico De Berardis,Umberto Volpe 대한정신약물학회 2021 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.19 No.2

Although believed safer compared to short-acting benzodiazepines (BZD), in the past few years a growing concern has developed relating to the abuse of Z-drugs, and specifically of zolpidem. Here we aim to review the evidence for the misuse of zolpidem and describe several related cases collected in Italy. A comprehensive overview is here carried by using several databases, and by combining the search strategy of free text terms and exploding a range of MESH headings relating to the topics of Zolpidem and Abuse and/or Misuse as follows: ((Zolpidem [Title/Abstract]) AND (Abuse[Title/Abstract]) OR (Misuse[Title/Abstract])), without time and/or language restrictions. Furthermore, a case series of 8 cases of zolpidem misuse and/or abuse, collected in different Italian psychiatric settings (psychiatric public hospital, psychiatric private rehabilitation clinic, and private practice), have been here described. According to our findings, zolpidem should be prescribed with the same caution as BZDs, especially in patients with a history of drug abuse or in the elderly. Behavioural modifications, including bizarre behaviours, psychomotor agitation, sleep-related complex behaviours have been reported. Monitoring of zolpidem use in selected populations is warranted. Psychiatrists and physicians should be aware of the misuse potential of zolpidem and adopt measures restricting its use.

Surface Integrity Evaluation When Turning Inconel 718 Alloy Using Sustainable Lubricating-Cooling Approaches

        Le Gong,Rachele Bertolini,Stefania Bruschi,Andrea Ghiotti,Ning He 한국정밀공학회 2022 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.9 No.1

This novel work focuses on turning Inconel 718 alloy using different sustainable lubricating-cooling techniques. Cryogenic machining (Cryo), minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) and nanofluid MQL (NFMQL) were applied and their performances in terms of obtainable surface integrity evaluated in comparison with dry cutting (dry) and wet machining (wet). The surface integrity was analyzed from the aspect of surface roughness, surface morphology and defects, microhardness, microstructure, and chip morphology. The experimental results revealed that Cryo offered overall better performances when compared to dry, wet, MQL and NFMQL strategies: lower surface roughness, fewer surface defects and lower chip compression ratio were observed. Furthermore, increasing the cutting speed led to higher surface roughness and incidence of surface defects for all the applied strategies, except for Cryo.

Effervescent Glutamine Formulation Improves the Beneficial Effects of Antiretroviral Therapies on Immune Function in HIV/AIDS Carrier Patients

Tuane Krupek,Bruna Juliana Wanczinski Ferrari,Maria Angelica Raffaini Covas Pereira da Silva,Christiano Rodrigues Schamber,Dennis Armando Bertolini,Marcos Luciano Bruschi,Isolde Terezinha Santos Previ 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.5

The impact of oral supplementation with an effervescent glutamine formulation on the beneficial effects of antiretroviral therapies was evaluated in people living with HIV/AIDS. For this purpose, 12 HIV/AIDS carrier patients with CD4+ T cell counts <500, and who had received the same antiretroviral therapy for at least 1 year before starting this investigation were selected. The patients were required to dissolve the effervescent glutamine formulation (supplied in sachets) in water immediately before oral ingestion (12.4 g), once a day, after lunch or after dinner during 30 days. CD4+ T cell counts, complete blood cell counts, serum cytokines, and amino acids levels were quantified; biochemical and toxicological measurements were performed. The numbers of CD4+ T cells were increased (P < .05), and the serum C-reactive protein levels decreased (P < .01) after the administration of effervescent glutamine formulation. Serum levels of interferon-gamma inducible protein-10, RANTES, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1β were decreased after the treatment with effervescent glutamine formulation. No changes were observed in the serum levels of amino acids, hematological, toxicological, and biochemical parameters. In conclusion, the treatment during 30 days with effervescent glutamine formulation was well tolerated, promoted reduction of inflammation, and improved the beneficial effects of antiretroviral therapies in HIV/AIDS carrier patients.
