The construction industry suffers from declining productivity and lack of trust between stakeholders and among the public. Increasing technical, regulatory, environmental and ethical challenges face the sector and necessitate a new type of leader. Authentic leadership is a relatively new construct that focuses on a leader demonstrating self-awareness, relational transparency, an internalized ethical and moral perspective and balanced processing. This study uses the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire to measure construction superintendent's levels of authentic leadership and compares them to effectiveness ratings. There is a correlation between higher authentic leadership scores and effectiveness and this study concludes that authentic leaders are more effective superintendents.

PURPOSES: This study set out to investigate the current state of microsurfacing in Texas and compared the results with the current state of the practice nationwide. METHODS: For this study, case studies were extracted from the existing literature and compared with the data obtained both from site visits by the research team and data obtained from a survey by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) personnel. The successes and failures of microsurfacing are detailed and explanations of different issues are outlined. Forensic studies from Texas are included in the descriptions of those microsurfacings that failed when configured as part of the cape seals. RESULTS : Microsurfacing has been shown to be an effective pavement preservation technique when applied to an appropriate road, at an appropriate timing, and as a remedy for certain issues. The failures experienced in Texas can mostly be attributed to cape seals and an inability to recognize structurally faulty pavement. CONCLUSIONS : When applied to an appropriate road, at an appropriate timing, and as a remedy for certain issues, microsurfacing has been shown to perform well in numerous case studies. The majority of microsurfacing failures are the result of poor project selection, usually involving the treatment being applied to structurally unsound pavement.
Preparation and Application of an s-Triazine-Based Novel N-Halamine Biocide for Antimicrobial Fibers

N-halamines serve as important antimicrobial agents. Development of this class of compounds has been shown to provide benefits especially from a biocidal point of view. A novel s-triazine-based N-heterocycle, dichloro-m-aminophenylhydantoinyl-s-triazine (DAPHT), which could be rendered antimicrobial through exposure to diluted chlorine bleach; was synthesized and characterized by $^1H\;NMR$, $^{13}C$ NMR, and FT-IR. A finishing method was used to apply the N-halamine precursor onto cotton fabric, and the optimum conditions for finishing were investigated. The DAPHT-treated cotton fabric had durable antimicrobial properties up to 50 standard washing cycles and was rechargeable under normal laundry/bleaching conditions. The antimicrobial efficacy against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was demonstrated.
배수용(排水用) 파장(波狀)튜브인 3½" 외경(外徑) "프라코프랙스"의 수리학적(水理學的) 특성(特性)에 관(關)한 시험(試驗)

本實驗은 카나다 매길 대학교의 農工學科 水理實驗室에서 R.S. Brougton敎授와 함께 施行 한것으로 現今 歐美 諸國에서 濕地排水用으로 많이 使用하고 있는 內徑 3½" 波狀形 푸라스틱 튜브의 水埋學的 特性을 調査硏究한 結果이다. 1. 0.060ft/100ft로 부터 2.630ft/100ft까지의 損失水頭의 範圍에서 2개의 튜브를 통한 流出量은 0.003 c.f.s.에서 0.188c.f.s.로 나타났으며 2. 單一 튜브에 있어서는 유출량을 0.162 c.f.s.로 부터 0.376 c.f.s.로 함으로써 손실 수두는 1.854ft/100ft에서 9.964ft/100ft로 이 들은 現地 施設에서 許容되는 범위이다. 3. 第1項의 유출량과 水頭損失에 있어서 맨닝의 마찰계수 n은 平均値가 0.0145인 0.012로 부터 0.052의 범위내 였다. 4. 유출량 0.030 c.f.s.로 부터 0.188 c.f.s.에 이르는 23번의 측정치와 0.162 c.f.s.로 부터 0.376 a.f.s에 이르는 7번의 측정치에 대한 全體的인 n 값의 平均値는 0.01453이었다. 5. 10ft/100ft의 現地?配를 고려한 特別시험을 한 結果 비록 유속이나 레이놀드 남버는 높았지만 그림 2에서 보는바와 같이 맨닝의 n 값은 別로 증가되지 않았다. 故로 “PLACOFLEX”波狀形 푸라스틱 튜브에 있어서 n=0.0145가 훌륭한 설계치로써 천거될수 있다고 사료된다. 6. 그림 3의 무디 다이아 그램에서 Darcy-Wiesb-ach의 마찰 손실계수 f와 레이놀드수의 値 들은 거개가 相對 粗度 (E/D)0.03의 주위에 몰려 있음을 보여주고 있다. 이것은 이 튜브 相對 조도치(0.057)로써 波狀深의 最初의 大略的인 利用에 依하여 期待될수 있는것 보다 더 매끄러운 管이라는 것을 알 수있다. 그래서 波狀深을 相對粗度値얻는데 利用해서는 안될 것이다.
Concurrent Isolation of 3 Distinct Cardiac Stem Cell Populations From a Single Human Heart Biopsy

<P><B><U>Rationale:</U></B></P><P>The relative actions and synergism between distinct myocardial-derived stem cell populations remain obscure. Ongoing debates on optimal cell population(s) for treatment of heart failure prompted implementation of a protocol for isolation of multiple stem cell populations from a single myocardial tissue sample to develop new insights for achieving myocardial regeneration.</P><P><B><U>Objective:</U></B></P><P>Establish a robust cardiac stem cell isolation and culture protocol to consistently generate 3 distinct stem cell populations from a single human heart biopsy.</P><P><B><U>Methods and Results:</U></B></P><P>Isolation of 3 endogenous cardiac stem cell populations was performed from human heart samples routinely discarded during implantation of a left ventricular assist device. Tissue explants were mechanically minced into 1 mm<SUP>3</SUP> pieces to minimize time exposure to collagenase digestion and preserve cell viability. Centrifugation removes large cardiomyocytes and tissue debris producing a single cell suspension that is sorted using magnetic-activated cell sorting technology. Initial sorting is based on tyrosine-protein kinase Kit (c-Kit) expression that enriches for 2 c-Kit<SUP>+</SUP> cell populations yielding a mixture of cardiac progenitor cells and endothelial progenitor cells. Flowthrough c-Kit<SUP>−</SUP> mesenchymal stem cells are positively selected by surface expression of markers CD90 and CD105. After 1 week of culture, the c-Kit<SUP>+</SUP> population is further enriched by selection for a CD133<SUP>+</SUP> endothelial progenitor cell population. Persistence of respective cell surface markers in vitro is confirmed both by flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry.</P><P><B><U>Conclusions:</U></B></P><P>Three distinct cardiac cell populations with individualized phenotypic properties consistent with cardiac progenitor cells, endothelial progenitor cells, and mesenchymal stem cells can be successfully concurrently isolated and expanded from a single tissue sample derived from human heart failure patients.</P>
