        Alternative Medicine in Periodontal Therapyd-A Review

        Periodontal diseases continue to be most commonly occurring oral diseases in modern times. Many therapeutic modalities have been tried and tested to relieve these problems. The conventional therapydscaling and root planing (SRP)dstands out to be the most used mode of treatment, and other treatments remain applicable as adjuncts to SRP,including acupuncture, acupressure, and aromatherapy. The present article discusses the applications of the abovementioned therapeutic modes and their relevance in current scenarios. Alternative medicine may be preferred as an adjunct to conventional periodontal therapy to relieve pain, bad breath, gingival inflammation, mouth ulcers, and mouth sores.

      • Contingency Analysis of Transmission Lines Using Reactive Power Performance Indexing Method

        Power system security issue is becoming a vital and critical issue for efficient and effective operation of power system network. The power system engineers/operators may face various kinds of issues like outage of generators, transmission lines and loads during operation of the system. The operator should take an instant and correct decision to minimize the effect of such outages for reliable operation of network. This paper aims to solve N-1 contingency problem of transmission line using reactive power performance indexing method. The most vulnerable lines are screened by ranking in order to make ease to give high attention towards such lines during operation of network. For this purpose, two models IEEE-14 Test Bus and Integrated Nepalese Power System network were used.

        Empirical equation and experimental validation of shear parameters for high strength concrete (HSC)

        With many benefits of the high strength concrete (HSC) the more brittle behaviour that leads to sudden failure makes it important for proper understanding of its behaviour and safe and efficient estimation of capacities. Research on the behaviour of HSC has been extensively carried out since last decade. HSC has higher tensile strength hence a higher cracking shear can be expected. This paper analyzes the different international standards available for estimating concrete’s component of shear strength for reinforced cement concrete (RCC) beam. Different important factors mainly strength in compression, steel reinforcement (dowel action), ratio of shear span and depth, size effect i.e. depth along with the aggregate type (density of concrete) contributing to shear stress (Tc) of concrete has been also analyzed and thereafter, an equation has been proposed to compute or predict Tc value for concrete of both normal and higher grade or strength. The proposed equation has been validated by experimental results wherein 12 RCC beams (with and without reinforcement for shear) were cast and tested to fail in shear. The experimental results validated the proposed equation with considerable factor of safety keeping in view the sudden and brittle nature of failure in concrete in case of shear.

        RESEARCH : Open Access ; Effect of misting and wallowing cooling systems on milk yield, blood and physiological variables during heat stress in lactating Murrah buffalo

        Background: Heat stress adversely affects the physiological and metabolic status, and the productive performance of buffalo. Methods: The present study was conducted to explicate the effect of misting and wallowing cooling strategies during heat stress in lactating Murrah buffalo. The study was conducted for three months (May.July) of which first two months were hot dry and last month was hot humid. Eighteen lactating buffaloes, offered the same basal diet, were blocked by days in milk, milk yield and parity, and then randomly allocated to three treatments: negative control (no cooling), cooling by misting, and cooling by wallowing. Results: The results showed higher (P < 0.05) milk yield in buffaloes of misting and wallowing group compared to control during the experimental period however wallowing was found more (P < 0.05) effective during July (hot humid period). Both the treatments resulted into significant (P < 0.05) reduction in rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) compared to control animals during study period whereas wallowing was found to be effective on pulse rate (PR) only during July. Both treatments were resulted in mitigating the heat stress mediated decrease in packed cell volume (PCV), lymphocytopnoea and neutrophilia whereas decrease in total erythrocyte count (TEC) and monocytes was only mitigated by wallowing. Heat load induced alteration in serum creatinine and sodium concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) ameliorated by misting and wallowing whereas aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and superoxide dismutase activity, and reactive oxygen species concentration could be normalized neither by misting nor by wallowing. The significant (P < 0.05) increment in serum cortisol and prolactin levels observed in June and July period in control animals was significantly (P < 0.05) prevented by misting and wallowing. Conclusions: It can be concluded that misting and wallowing were equally effective in May and June (hot dry period) whereas wallowing was more effective during hot humid period in preventing a decline in milk production and maintaining physiological, metabolic, endocrine and redox homeostasis.

        Analysis of stress block parameters for high strength concrete

        In Indian Standard code IS: 456-2000 for concrete of grades higher than M55, the design parameters given may not be applicable as structural behaviour of concrete changes as strength of concrete increases. Different international standards give different stress block parameters which can be reduced to these two basic factors. In this paper, stress block parameters K (strength reduction factor) and k2 (factor for the depth of resultant compressive force) were calculated from experimental strain values considering the stress-strain curve as parabolic for lower grades and as linear for higher grades. Also, the method and approach for the calculation of stress block parameters have been worked out. The method so proposed is compared with the model proposed in European design standard EC: 02-2004 by trans-forming the European stress block parameters to the basic parameters used. Also, the effect of the shape of the stress-strain curve and value of ultimate strain in concrete on stress block parameters and moment capacity of the members was analyzed by working on the representative section. The method or approach so proposed will be useful to understand and compare flexural design philosophies used in different international standards by reducing the stress block parameters to two basic factors.

        Micelles in Physical Chemistry Laboratory. Surfactant Catalyzed Oxidation of Glycine by Acidic Permanganate

        미셀 촉매 작용은 이론과 실험 화학 교과내용에서 중요한 부분이다. 산성 용액에서 도데실황산 나트륨(SDS)을 촉매로 한 글리신과 과망가니즈산 칼륨의 반응은 미셀 촉매 작용을 보여주는 반응속도론적 실험으로 적합하며, 고등학교와 대학 학부과정의 물리화학실험에서 사용할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이 반응이 계면활성제 존재하에서 반응속도가 빨라지는 것을 관찰하기 위하여 SDS를 넣지 않은 경우와 넣은 경우 모두 실험을 진행하였고, 얻어진 k를 [SDS]에 대하여 도시하였다. SDS의 임계 미셀 농도 이하에서부터 계면활성제에 의한 촉매 효과가 관찰되었는데, 이 선-미셀 촉매 효과는 양의 협 동효과에 의한 것임을 알 수 있다. 얻어진 양의 협동지수(n)는 2.37이다. 또한 기질과 산화제의 농도에 따른 반응속도 변화도 논의하였다. 반응은 유사 일차 반응으로 진행되었으며, 글리신과 과망가니즈산 이온의 농도에 각각 일차 반응으로 나타나 전체 반응 차수는 이차 반응이었다. 반응 시간은 3~4시간으로 한 실험 시간에 몇 개의 실험 데이터를 얻을 수 있다. 용액 제조와 실험 과정에 대해서 자세히 기술하였으며, 또한 계면활성제에 의한 촉매 작용의 이론도 논의하였다.

        Vehicular Ad hoc network is usually deployed for minimizing hand off latency and reducing packet loss. VANET consist of vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication. Vehicles form infrastructure network with the access point and infrastructure less within themselves which is called ad-hoc network. The handoff latency and packet loss is reduced with the help of front and rear vehicles. In case of no front or rear vehicles this scenario comes to halt with both handoff latency and packet loss coming into picture. So in order to remove this flaw we create a pool of IP addresses where two access points share a particular group of IP address. This paper deals with this method described in detail.

      • Gaussian Profile based Vehicular Mobility Modeling

        The driving behavior of a person is influenced by a multitude of local and global factors. These include nature of the driver, distance between the source and destination, condition of the road selected by the driver, traffic conditions, time constraints, lane changing, overtaking actions, safe distance, reaction time etc. are vital for modeling the mobility of a vehicle and are largely determined by the driving behavior. In this paper, a profile based model has been proposed to define the mobility behavior of the vehicles. Different types of influence on the mobility have been lumped and the profile of the motion of vehicles has been modeled as a Gaussian profile. In this model, a driver, first, selects the source, destination and his path and then, selects the parameters of the profile according to his/her presumption. Simulation and results show that profile based model is able to generate realistic and smooth mobility patterns.

      • Controlled Growth of Semiconducting Nanowire, Nanowall, and Hybrid Nanostructures on Graphene for Piezoelectric Nanogenerators

        <P>Precise control of morphologies of one- or two-dimensional nanostructures during growth has not been easy, usually degrading device performance and therefore limiting applications to various advanced nanoscale electronics and optoelectronics. Graphene could be a platform to serve as a substrate for both morphology control and direct use of electrodes due to its ideal monolayer flatness with π electrons. Here, we report that, by using graphene directly as a substrate, vertically well-aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and nanowalls were obtained systematically by controlling gold (Au) catalyst thickness and growth time without inflicting significant thermal damage on the graphene layer during thermal chemical vapor deposition of ZnO at high temperature of about 900 °C. We clarify Au nanoparticle positions at graphene–ZnO heterojunctions that are very important in realizing advanced nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic applications of such nanostructures. Further, we demonstrate a piezoelectric nanogenerator that was fabricated from the vertically aligned nanowire–nanowall ZnO hybrid/graphene structure generates a new type of direct current through the specific electron dynamics in the nanowire–nanowall hybrid.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2011/ancac3.2011.5.issue-5/nn200942s/production/images/medium/nn-2011-00942s_0003.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn200942s'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
