      • Surgical Perspective of T1799A BRAF Mutation Diagnostic Value in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

        Background: Throughout Indonesia, thyroid cancer is one of the ten commonest malignancies, with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in our hospital accounting for about 60% of all thyroid nodules. Although fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is the most reliable diagnostic tool, some nodules are diagnosed as indeterminate and second surgery is common for PTC. The aim of this study was to establish the diagnostic value and feasibility of testing the BRAF T1799A mutation on FNA specimens for improving PTC diagnosis. Materials and Methods: This prospective study enrolled 95 patients with thyroid nodules and future surgery planned. Results of mutational status were compared with surgical pathology diagnosis. Results: Of the 70 cases included in the final analysis, 62.8% were PTC and the prevalence of BRAF mutation was 38.6%. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) for BRAF mutation analysis were 36%, 100%, 100% and 48%, respectively. With other data findings, nodules with "onset less than 5 year" and "hard consistency" were proven as diagnostic determinants for BRAF mutation with a probability of 62.5%. This mutation was also a significant risk factor for extra-capsular extension. Conclusions: Molecular analysis of the BRAF T1799A mutation in FNAB specimens has high specificity and positive predictive value for PTC. It could be used in the selective patients with clinical characteristics to facilitate PTC diagnosis and for guidance regarding extent of thyroidectomy.

        Effective black-to-white hole bounces: the cost of surgery

        <P>We investigate possible geometries allowing transitions from a black hole to a white hole spacetime, by placing a space-like thin shell between them. Such proposals have been advanced recently to account for singularity-resolution in black-hole spacetimes. This space-like shell can be extended to be outside the event horizon and, thereby, reproduce some of the features of these proposals. On the other hand, if the space-like shell is confined fully within the horizon, then it results in a bounce near a space-like singularity inside the black hole. For both cases, the null energy condition is necessarily violated, at least effectively, due to the introduction of quantum effects. If the shell, with a non-trivial negative tension, extends beyond the event horizon, then one can see effects of quantum gravity modifications even outside the horizon as a cost of such a space-like surgery. Naturally, one needs to consider whether these types of manufactured spacetimes violate any known laws of nature, allowing for reasonable assumptions. After critically comparing our results with several models in the literature, we reiterate a new way to avoid such black-hole singularities without leaving a white-hole remnant via a quantum bounce.</P>

        Constraining the loop quantum gravity parameter space from phenomenology

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Development of quantum gravity theories rarely takes inputs from experimental physics. In this letter, we take a small step towards correcting this by establishing a paradigm for incorporating putative quantum corrections, arising from canonical quantum gravity (QG) theories, in deriving <I>falsifiable</I> modified dispersion relations (MDRs) for particles on a deformed Minkowski space–time. This allows us to differentiate and, hopefully, pick between several quantization choices via <I>testable, state-of-the-art</I> phenomenological predictions. Although a few explicit examples from loop quantum gravity (LQG) (such as the regularization scheme used or the representation of the gauge group) are shown here to establish the claim, our framework is more general and is capable of addressing other quantization ambiguities within LQG and also those arising from other similar QG approaches.</P>

        On singularity-resolution in mimetic gravity

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Recently, it was shown that modified mimetic gravity, with a f ( □ ϕ ) term, results in a singularity-free model of gravity, for both cosmological and black hole spacetimes . In this work, we analyze this model further and show that, since the function <I>f</I> was tuned to vanish rapidly for small values of the argument, the non-singular bounce relies heavily on a subtle branch changing mechanism for the multi-valued function <I>f</I>. Furthermore, this mechanism has interesting implications for the proposed link between this model and loop quantum cosmology.</P>

        Evaluation of Websites of Public Libraries of India under Ministry of Culture: A Webometric Analysis

        The purpose of this paper is to investigate the domain authority, number of webpages, links, and calculate the web impact factor of six public libraries of India which are fully funded by Ministry of Culture with the supervision of administration. The data for the study were collected from websites of concerned libraries with the help of a suitable search engine, Open Site Explorer. The study found that the highest domain and page authority was recorded by Khuda Baksh Oriental Public Library and National Library, respectively. It also further revealed that excepting the two libraries, i.e., Khuda Baksh Oriental Public Library and Delhi Public Library, the internal equity-passing links and total internal links of rest of the libraries is zero. National Library leads with maximum total links and total equity-passing links, also with the highest followed linking root domains, total linking root domains, and linking C blocks, and concludes with the web impact factor of Central Secretariat Library recording the maximum, followed by National Library and Khuda Baksh Oriental Public Library.

        Preparation of Calcium Silicate Hydrate Extrudates and Their Phosphate Adsorption Studies

        Cylindrical shape extrudates of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) were prepared using different percentages of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) / sodium alginate (SA) mixtures as binders and an aqueous solution containing 6% H3BO3 and 3% CaCl2 was used as a cross linking agent. As the quantity of alginate increases, the phosphate removal efficiency and capacity were decreased. Among four different extrudate samples, the sample prepared by 8% PVA + 2% SA showed the highest phosphate removal efficiency (59.59%) and capacity (29.97 mg/g) at an initial phosphate concentration of 100 ppm and 2.0 g/L adsorbent dosage. Effects of the adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial phosphate concentration on the sample were further studied. The removal efficiency and capacity obtained by a 4.0 g/L adsorbent dose at an initial phosphate concentration of 100 ppm in 3 h were 79.38% and 19.96 mg/g, respectively. The experimental data of kinetic and isotherm measurements followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. These results suggested that the phosphate removal was processed via a chemisorption and a monolayer coverage of phosphate anions was on the CSH surface. The maximum adsorption capacity () was calculated as 23.87 mg/g from Langmuir isotherm model.

        Glutamic Acid-Grafted Metal-Organic Framework: Preparation, Characterization, and Heavy Metal Ion Removal Studies

        Fast industrial and agricultural expansion result in the production of heavy metal ions (HMIs). These are exceedingly hazardous to both humans and the environment, and the necessity to eliminate them from aqueous systems prompts the development of novel materials. In the present study, a UIO-66 (COOH)<sub>2</sub> metal-organic framework (MOF) containing free carboxylic acid groups was post-synthetically modified with L-glutamic acid via the solid-solid reaction route. Pristine and glutamic acid-treated MOF materials were characterized in detail using several physicochemical techniques. Single-ion batch adsorption studies of Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions were carried out using pristine as well as amino acid-modified MOFs. We further examined parameters that influence removal efficiency, such as the initial concentration and contact time. The bare MOF had a higher ion adsorption capacity for Pb(II) (261.87 mg/g) than for Hg(II) ions (10.54 mg/g) at an initial concentration of 150 ppm. In contrast, an increased Hg(II) ion adsorption capacity was observed for the glutamic acid-modified MOF (80.6 mg/g) as compared to the bare MOF. The Hg(II) ion adsorption capacity increased by almost 87% after modification with glutamic acid. Fitting results of isotherm and kinetic data models indicated that the adsorption of Pb(II) on both pristine and glutamic acid-modified MOFs was due to surface complexation of Pb(II) ions with available -COOH groups (pyromellitic acid). Adsorption of Hg(II) on the glutamic acid-modified MOF was attributed to chelation, in which glutamic acid grafted onto the surface of the MOF formed chelates with Hg(II) ions.
