Composite Rocket Propellants Based on Thermoplastic Elastomer Binders
Vladica Bozic,Boris Jankovski,Marko Milos,Bok Jik Lee(이복직) 한국추진공학회 2010 한국추진공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.11
The objective of this paper is to present new binder systems that can be applied in composite rocket propellants, to improve properties of these propellants not only for better performance, but also to reduce waste and pollution. These novel systems are based on the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) binders, which consists of copolymers with the addition of a plasticizer, and additives. The effect of the novel TPE binder systems on the burning rate and mechanical properties of AP based propellants was studied. The results show that propellants based on the novel TPE binders have a better energy performance than today’s workhorse hydroxyl terminated polybutadine/ammonium perchlorate propellant, exhibit a similar range of burning rate, possess appropriate mechanical properties, and exhibit good processing and aging characteristics at low cost.

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are often interested in which diets to follow. Our aim was to investigate which dietary habits were common among our patients, and which of them were in correlation with laboratory parameters of disease activity, such as complement values and 24-h proteinuria. This study included 76 patients with SLE in clinical remission with a 6-month flare free period. They completed a specialized, self-administered, 23-item food frequency questionnaire about their weekly dietary habits. Basic anthropometric data, levels of C3 and C4, and 24-h proteinuria were recorded and analyzed with respect to their dietary habits. The majority of patients had a normal body mass index of 18.5–25 kg/m2, and worked out regularly. The most frequently consumed foods reported by the patients were fruits, milk, vegetables, meat, pasta, rice, and bread. Decreased values of C3 were found in 34 (44.7%) patients, and decreased values of C4 in 28 (36.8%) patients. Decreased values of C3 were found in patients who often consumed meat (P = .015), and decreased values of C4 in patients who often consumed fast food (P = .043). Patients who often consumed fast food demonstrated a decreasing trend of C3 (P = .060), and patients who often consumed fried food had a decreasing trend of C4 (P = .051). Significant correlation between daily proteinuria and dietary habits was not found. Dietary habits can influence the disease course of SLE. Our study confirms that decreased levels of complement compounds C3 and C4, which are possible predictors of disease activation, are associated with frequent consumption of low quality proteins and food rich in calories.

The technology of production of the thermoplastic composite rocket propellants is based on a two-phase production procedure. The first phase represents the production of a semi-product in the sheet (foil) form (thickness: 0.5 mm ~ 5 mm), whereas the second phase is realized independently from the first one and it is based on the semi-produced product and thus the final form of the propellant grain is realized in relation to the defined geometry. Well done mechanical characteristics of the propellant grain enable that the same thing could be used as a mandrel in the filament winding procedure in creating the motor chamber of the composite material.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a range of chronic diseases, including childhood obesity. Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in obese children and adolescents ranges from 6.5% to 57%. This cross-sectional study included 92 obese patients with body mass index z-score >2 and 39 subjects in the control group. Anthropometric and laboratory patient assessment were performed, including the fasting 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed by Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for children and adolescents (KIDMED index), while physical activity was evaluated by Physical Activity Questionnaire (PAQ). Serum levels of 25(OH)D were significantly lower in obese subjects compared to the control group (52.0 ± 17.93 vs. 64.09 ± 25.82 nmol/L, P = .003). The subgroup of obese patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) had significantly lower levels of serum vitamin D when compared to the subgroup of obese patients without MS and the control group (46.99 ± 17.11 vs. 54.58 ± 17.93 vs. 64.09 ± 25.82 nmol/L, P = .003). Obese patients with MS had lower PAQ score when compared to obese without MS and the control group (2.32 ± 0.55 vs. 2.49 ± 0.67 vs. 2.85 ± 0.63 nmol/L, P = .002), while no significant differences were observed in the KIDMED index (4.23 ± 1.81 vs. 4.21 ± 2.13 vs. 4.87 ± 2.29, P = .251), respectively. PAQ score was in positive correlation with serum levels of 25(OH)D (r = 0.305, P < .001). This study demonstrated that obese children and adolescents have significantly lower values of serum 25(OH)D. The positive correlation between vitamin D and PAQ score points to the importance of physical activity in the prevention of further cardiovascular complications and MS.
