        A CMAC-PD Compound Torque Controller with Fast Learning Capacity and Improved Output Smoothness for Electric Load Simulator

        The compound architecture of CMAC (Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller) and PD (Proportional-Derivative) can effectively reduce the loading error and restrain the surplus torque of electric load simulators. But due to its generalization ability, the CMAC controller has an unsmooth output, which leads to the motor vibration even the divergence of control system. The unsmooth prob-lem of CMAC is analyzed in this paper and a novel scalar cost function of CMAC is proposed, which consists of an error item and a weight smoothing item to guarantee fast learning capacity and improved output smoothness of CMAC. With the novel scalar cost function, a compound torque controller of PD and smooth CMAC is derived by using the gradient descent algorithm. Both the simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the novel CMAC-PD compound controller can effectively improve the output smoothness of the electric load simulator, eliminate the surplus torque and assure the stability of system as well.

        The microRNA expression profiles of mouse mesenchymal stem cell during chondrogenic differentiation

        MicroRNAs are potential key regulators in mesenchymal stem cells chondrogenic differentiation. However, there were few reports about the accurate effects of miRNAs on chondrogenic differentiation. To investigate the mechanisms of miRNAs-mediated regulation during the process, we performed miRNAs microarray in MSCs at four different stages of TGF-β3-induced chondrogenic differentiation. We observed that eight miRNAs were significantly up-regulated and five miRNAs were down- regulated. Interestingly, we found two miRNAs clusters, miR-143/145 and miR-132/212, kept on down-regulation in the process. Using bioinformatics approaches, we analyzed the target genes of these differentially expressed miRNAs and found a series of them correlated with the process of chondrogenesis. Furthermore, the qPCR results showed that the up-regulated (or down-regulated) expression of miRNAs were inversely associated with the expression of predicted target genes. Our results first revealed the expression profiles of miRNAs in chondrogenic differentiation of MSCs and provided a new insight on complicated regulation mechanisms of chondrogenesis.         Enhancing the adsorption function of F⁻ by iron and zirconium doped zeolite: Characterization and parameter optimization

        This study presented an original study on the F⁻ removal by Fe and Zr doped Gismondine-dominated Zeolite. Various modified zeolites are prepared by systematically adjusting the synthesis variables, namely pH, mass ratio of zeolite to modify agent (m<SUB>Zeolite:m(Fe+Zr)</SUB>), mass ratio of Fe to Zr (Fe:Zr) to investigate their effects on the F⁻ adsorption. The performance of prepared Fe-Zr-Zeolite on F⁻ removal was examined through both statistic adsorption and dynamic adsorption. Results indicated that when the modified pH was 7, the Fe:Zr ratio was 1:1 and m<SUB>Zeolite:m(Fe+Zr)</SUB> was 1:2, the modified natural zeolites which was named Fe-Zr-Zeolite showed the best removal efficiency on F⁻. Fe-Zr-Zeolite could remove over 80% when the initial concentration was less than 20 mg/L and F⁻ adsorption followed pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic and Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating that F⁻ adsorption by Fe-Zr-Zeolite was chemically dominated. Besides, Fe-Zr-Zeolite had better removal efficiency of F⁻ under acidic conditions than that under alkaline conditions, and the competing anions, typically, Cl-, NO₃⁻ and SO₄<SUP>2-</SUP> had negligible effect on F⁻ removal by Fe-Zr-Zeolite. The dynamic adsorption test demonstrated that in order to maintain the high removal efficiency of F⁻, the filling thickness of Fe-Zr-Zeolite should be at least 30 ㎝ and the small the flow rate is, the higher the F⁻ removal efficiency will be.

        Protective Effect of Astragaloside IV against Matrix Metalloproteinase- 1 Expression in Ultraviolet-Irradiated Human Dermal Fibroblasts

        Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induces skin photoaging associated with up-regulated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression. Inhibition of MMP expression is suggested to alleviate photoaging induced by UV irradiation. Astragaloside IV (As-IV), one of the main active ingredients of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bge, has been reported to have various biological activities. However, its anti-photoaging effect has not been examined to date. In the present study, we observed the effect of As-IV on matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression in UV-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). We found that treatment with As-IV significantly decreased UV-induced MMP-1 expression at the messenger RNA and protein levels. In addition, western blotting analysis revealed that As-IV concentration-dependently suppressed UV-induced phosphorylation of extracellular-regulated protein kinase, Jun-N-terminal kinase and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Furthermore, treatment with As-IV markedly inhibited UV-induced nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) activity. These results suggest that As-IV down-regulates UV-induced MMP-1 expression, perhaps through suppression of MAPK and NF-κB activation in HDFs. As-IV is thus a potential agent for the management of skin photoaging.

        Removal characteristics of nitrogen oxides and particulates of a novel Mn-Ce-Nb-Ox/P84 catalytic filter applied for cement kiln

        A novel Mn-Ce-Nb-Ox/P84 catalyticfilter for synergetic removal of particulates and NO was designed andprepared by a new method using functional foaming coating. Removal characteristics of nitrogen oxides(including catalyst loading amount, O2 concentration, NH3/NO molar ratio, H2O and SO2) andparticulates, were systematically studied. Results showed that the NO removal efficiency of catalyticfilter reached 95.3% at 200 C, as the catalyst loading amount,filtration velocity and mole ratio of NH3/NOwere set to be 450 g/m2, 1 m/min and 1, respectively. The removal characteristic of particulates of Mn-Ce-Nb-Ox/P84 catalyticfilter belonged surfacefiltration and the PM2.5 removal efficiency reached 99.98%.

        Kidney Transplantation and Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Multiple Myeloma: Evidence From the United States Nationwide Inpatient Sample

        Purpose: Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) are prone to developing persistent renal insufficiency. Novel therapeutic medications have improved long-term survival, making kidney transplantation (KT) a viable treatment option for MM survivors with end-stage renal disease. This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes in patients with MM who have received KT. Methods: Data from hospitalized patients ≥40 years of age with MM in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample 2016–2018 of the United States were queried. Patients were classified as having or not having undergone KT, as well as the stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) for those who had not received KT. Propensity-score matching (PSM) was applied to balance the characteristics between the groups. Binary logistic regression was utilized to determine the associations between study variables and inhospital mortality, unfavorable discharges, prolonged length of stay (LOS), and major complications. Results: In total, 50,654 hospitalized patients with MM were identified, of whom 165 (0.3%) had received KT and 50,489 had not (5,905 at stage 5 CKD [CKD5D], 11,559 at stage 1–4 CKD [CKD1-4D], and 33,025 who were CKD-free). After PSM, between-group demographic and hospital-related characteristics were balanced. Binary regression analysis revealed that, compared to patients who were CKD-free, patients at CKD5D were significantly more likely to experience a prolonged LOS (odds ratio [OR], 1.31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01–1.70) after adjusting for relevant confounders. Furthermore, compared to CKD-free patients, those who underwent KT were significantly more likely to have sepsis (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.02–2.14). However, KT showed no association with the other adverse inpatient outcomes. Conclusions: Although KT is not common in MM patients, those who had undergone KT had comparable hospital outcomes to CKD-free patients. These data will help clinicians deliver better consultations to MM patients attempting to receive KT.

        Variational Bayesian Adaptive Unscented Kalman Filter for RSSI-based Indoor Localization

        Most existing localization schemes necessitate a priori statistical characteristic of measurement noise, which may be unrealistic in practical applications. This paper investigates the variational Bayesian adaptive unscented Kalman filtering (VBAUKF) for received signal strength indication (RSSI) based indoor localization under inaccurate process and measurement noise covariance matrices. First, an inaccurate and slowly varying measurement noise covariance matrix can be estimated by choosing appropriate conjugate prior distribution for an indoor localization model with inaccurate process and measurement noise covariance matrices. By choosing inverse Wishart priors distribution, the state, predicted error and measurement noise covariance matrices are inferred on each time separately. Second, a parameter optimization algorithm is designed to minimize the localization error of VBAUKF until it less than the threshold set in advance. Finally, experimental validation is presented to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed filtering method for indoor localizaion.

      • A Comparison of the Lookup Table and On-The-Fly Calculation Methods for the Beamforming Control Unit

        Modern diagnostic ultrasound beamformers require extensive delay information for the focusing of each focal point along the image lines. For a typical beamforming system with dynamic delays, the beamforming control unit is used to calculate the delay information and generate instant delay profiles in order to achieve dynamic focusing beamforming. In this study, the beamforming control unit targeted at a home-based portable delta-sigma oversampled ultrasound beamforming setup was developed. The beamforming principle for 1-D linear transducer array with dynamic aperture was exploited, and three delay generation methods including complete lookup table, compressed lookup table with delta encoding and general parametric algorithm were investigated, implemented and synthesized using VHDL for a FPGA device Spartan-3E XC3S500E. A comparison was performed among the three delay generation methods on their performances in terms of overall logic resource usage and power consumption.

        Formation Control of Multiple UAVs Incorporating Extended State Observer-Based Model Predictive Approach

        This paper studies the extended state observer-based state space predictive control approach to deal with the multiple unmanned aerial vehicle formation flight with unknown disturbances. The distributed control problem for a class of multiple unmanned aerial vehicle systems with reference trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection is formulated. Firstly, a local distributed controller is designed by using the state space predictive control approach based on an error model to achieve stable tracking. Then, a feedforward compensation controller is introduced by using the extended state observer to estimate and compensate disturbances and improve the ability of anti-interference. Besides, the bounded stability of the designed extended state observer is analyzed as well. Finally, the simulation examples are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed control structure.

        Efficient Public Verification on the Integrity of Multi-Owner Data in the Cloud

        Cloud computing enables users to easily store their dataand simply share data with others. Due to the security threats inan untrusted cloud, users are recommended to compute verificationmetadata, such as signatures, on their data to protect the integrity. Many mechanisms have been proposed to allow a publicverifier to efficiently audit cloud data integrity without receivingthe entire data from the cloud. However, to the best of our knowledge,none of them has considered about the efficiency of publicverification on multi-owner data, where each block in data issigned by multiple owners. In this paper, we propose a novel publicverification mechanism to audit the integrity of multi-ownerdata in an untrusted cloud by taking the advantage of multisignatures. With our mechanism, the verification time and storageoverhead of signatures on multi-owner data in the cloud are independentwith the number of owners. In addition, we demonstratethe security of our scheme with rigorous proofs. Compared to thestraightforward extension of previousmechanisms, ourmechanismshows a better performance in experiments.
