The past, present and future of high-frequency balance testing

Less than 30 years ago a new method was introduced in wind-tunnel testing of tall buildings, known variously as the High-Frequency Base Balance or High-Frequency Force Balance, which revolutionized the determination of design wind loads using model studies. The method is reviewed in hindsight, in the perspective of the present, and with a crystal ball to speculate on future developments. These viewpoints focus on various technical issues that have been solved, are being solved, and need to be solved. The intent is to assist the uninitiated develop appreciation for the technology involved, to identify various pitfalls awaiting those who embark in the method, and to identify areas of need so that practicing design engineers-the users of such studies-can appreciate the limitations and collaborate on future advances while promoting improved communication between executor and user.

The circle hook experiments were conducted to compare the catch rates of target and bycatch species between J hook and circle hooks in the tuna longline fishery of the eastern Pacific Ocean between 1˚48'S-7˚00'S and 142˚00'-149˚13'W from July 15 to August 12, 2005. In the target species group no significant differences among 3 types hook, between size 4.0 traditional tuna hooks(J-4) and size 15 circle hooks(C15), and between C15 and size 18 circle hooks(C18) were revealed, but significant differences were found between J-4 and C18. In the bycatch species group significant differences were found among 3 types hook, between J 4 and C15, and between J-4 and C18, but no significant differences were revealed between C15 and C18. Large circle hook(C18) had the lowest catch rate for tunas and for other fishes, and the small circle hook(C15) had lowest rate for billfishes and sharks. The length distributions for bigeye tuna are very similar for the 3 hook types. There were very slight differences in length size between hook types in the bycatch species.

This study investigated L2 English listeners’ intelligibility and comprehensibility ratings of L2 English recordings of L1 Korean speakers’ speech. Specifically, it considered which segmentals and features resulting from Korean phonotactics cause a breakdown in Korean speakers’ L2 English intelligibility and comprehensibility for Mandarin L1-background L2 English speakers. As Korean speakers use English as a lingua franca primarily with their L1 Mandarin speaking neighbours, recordings of scripted and unscripted speech of Korean university students were sent to L1 Mandarin raters in mainland China and Taiwan, who rated utterances for intelligibility and comprehensibility. Findings showed that the most frequently mistranscribed features were epenthesis (inclusion of extra vowels to separate clustered consonants), substitution of nasals for plosives between vowels and sonorant consonants, and the consonant-vowel combination [wʊ]. Findings also suggest that less problematic features, such as [əʊ], /r/, and the distinction between [ʊ] and [u], are at times aided by similar realisations by L2 listeners.

This study aims to examine whether elastic band exercise influences aged women with mild cognitive impairment(MCI) with the dementia-related gene(Apo e4) in terms of their dementia rating, and cardiovascular risk factors. As the subjects of this paper, selected 34 aged women with MCI with Apo e4 among the aged women living in nursing facilities. They are divided into two groups through random assignment. The exercise program is conducted for total 12 weeks, in the intensity of HRR 40 to 60%, 3 times a week, and for 60 minutes a day. As the variables to be measured, their dementia scale are measured, and among the cardiovascular risk factors(TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C) are measured. For the data processing, the study employs Two-way ANOVA and analyzed its effects by periods and groups. Regarding the interactive effects, the main effect post-test is performed as paired t-test. About their change in terms of dementia rating and by items, the exercise group gains a higher point in the dementia rating test. And there is significant difference in their orientation of time, linguistic ability, memory storing ability, and linguistic delay and recalling ability. About their cardiovascular risk factors’ change, TG and LDL-C are significantly reduced. In conclusion, the elastic band exercise plays critical roles in aged women with MCI with Apo e4 in terms of their functional fitness, dementia rating, and cardiovascular risk factors. Thus, it is concluded to helpfully play better roles in delaying the speed of their transfer from MCI to Alzheimer’s and also preventing dementia as well.
