The Ethical Issues Related to Museum Collecting
Boa Rhee 한국박물관학회 2004 博物館學報 Vol.- No.7
Throughout history, acts of war such as bombardment as well as pillage and theft by invading forces are obvious threats cultural heritage. Especially, the illicit trade in cultural objects is now widely recognized as one of the most prevalent categories of intemational crime. Repatriations of cultural propeπy have already been extensively carried out by legal actions, by diplomatic pressure, by private donations or purchase, and so on since last decade. In the early 1970s, the concept of restitution crystallized around two basic issues: the removal of such cultural property from country of origin during the colonial period and the problem of continuing illicit traffic of cultural property which perpetuates and sometimes exceeds the past outflow. Increasing recognition of the significance of the cultural heritage as a source of information, knowledge, identity and continuity, and its important role in elucidating the various human civilization have increased the awareness of the responsibility of museum to preserve the cultural heritage as intact as possible for succeeding generations. Both problems of the illicit trade of cultural objects and the pillage of cultural property have forced members of the intemational community to act collectively the promulgation and pronouncement of intemational and national instrument and declarations. In this circumstance, the museum community is playing an active role in the protection of cultural objects, not only because of the losses sustained by museums but also because of a concem among museum professionals about the threat the illicit trade poses to the world’s cultural heritage. However, such efforts are not the absolute remedy to relieve the chronic problems around cultural property. From the historical perspective, the evolution of museums in the past two centuries has inevitably been intertwined with the colonial factors, often disenfranchising and indigenous people as prisoner of collections and archives. Indigenous pe

This paper discusses a Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC) model to analyze the walks, picks, and blocked states of two workers in a wide aisle circular-passage system. We develop a DTMC model when two workers pass one pick face with half of unit pick time, and derive the throughput loss model in a closed-form expression. We test the model with a simulation study to determine how the passing allowance assumption can improve operational throughput. The results show that the avoidance delay while passing impacts the throughput. We believe that the analytical model is an important step in developing a general blocking model in a wide aisle circular-passage system.

Soft coral Dendronephthya gigantea (Verrill, 1864) is a conspicuous species dominating shallow sea waters of Jejudo Island, Korea. Recently its whole mitochondrial genome sequencing was completed by us and the sequence information provided an opportunity to test the age of Octocorallia and time of evolutionary separation between some representative orders of the subclass Octocorallia. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 13 mitochondrial protein encoding genes revealed a polyphyletic relationship among octocorallians representing two orders (Alcyonacea and Gorgonacea) and four families (Alcyoniidae, Nephtheidae, Briareidae, and Gorgoniidae). Estimates of divergence times among octocorallians indicate that the first splitting might occur around end of or after Cretaceous period (50-79 million years ago (Ma)). The age is relatively young compared to the long history of stony sea corals (¤240 Ma). Taken together our result suggests a possible relatively recent radiating evolution at least in the order Alcyonacea and Gorgonacea. Molecular dating and phylogenetic analysis based on much broader taxon sampling and many genes might give an insight into this interesting hypothesis.

In the case of the Chungwadae Gallery, both smartphone and tablet computer applications as a digital docent failed to achieve a seamless visit model. Visitors had no interest in interpretation and the usage of mobile applications stayed at very low levels. And technical, practical, contextual and social issues in relation to using mobile applications have been derived from the empirical analysis. More importantly, visitors thought that the applications leave visitors incapable of deep engagement with companions in terms of isolation and intrusiveness. From this point of view, the biggest challenge of managing mobile interpretative device is encouraging visitors to use the mobile experience. It is somewhat skeptical about the value of mobile applications in the research of the Chungwadae Gallery, whereas the usability and the degree of satisfaction of using the application were relatively high in the research of the Leeum. However, several problems such as intrusiveness, isolation, head-down effect and technical problems should be improved to use the mobile application. In the case of the Leeum, a short orientation session as one of marketing efforts is a key component in encouraging visitors to use a mobile experience and in solving the problem of hesitancy.
Potentials and Challenges of the Usability of Art Museum Mobile Applications

The biggest challenge of managing mobile interpretative device is that visitors do not have the mobile experience. Thus, in the research of the mobile application of the Leeum (Samsung Museum of Art), a short orientation session as a treatment was provided to survey participants to make them use of a mobile experience. The orientation solved the problem of hesitancy of using smartphone in other researches, it was simultaneously the uniqueness of the methodology. Based on the research data, their satisfaction with visiting experience and with using the application appeared to be relatively high. A half of participants used the application for 10 minutes which is accounted for 20-30% of the total viewing time. Participants (80.3%) engaged in each exhibit with the application in less than 30 sec.-1 minute. Comparing with the average time of engagement (10-30 sec.) for each exhibit without using mobile applications, it is possible to conclude that the mobile application notably contributed to make participants engage with exhibits longer.
