      • Development of chicken stock improved protein content and antioxidant activity

        Bokyung Kim,Mi-Hwa Park,Seungcheol Lim,Inkyung Kim,Mihyang Kim 한국식품영양과학회 2021 한국식품영양과학회 학술대회발표집 Vol.2021 No.10

This study aimed to develop a chicken stock and natural seasoning with improved protein content and antioxidant activity. The general components of chicken stock (CS) and chicken stock with apple (CSA) were analyzed. The sugar content (brix), salinity and pH of CS and CSA were not significantly different among the groups. However, CSA showed a significant increased in crude protein content compared to CS. We examined also the change in antioxidant activity by the pretreatment method of Lentinula edodes (LE) to be added to chicken stock. There were three types of pretreatment methods: raw, naturally dried, and roasted. The polyphenol content due to the difference in pretreatment method was not significant between raw and natural dried LE. However, the polyphenol content of LE by the roasting method was higher than that of the raw and natural drying methods. DPPH and ABTS activities were also higher in LE dried by the roasting method than raw and naturally dried LE. Therefore, we decided to use roasted LE for development of chicken stock. The above results are expected to help improve the functionality of chicken stock and develop healthy products.

The Effect of Teacher Feedback on Student Motivation in an EFL Writing Class

        Bokyung Murray 한국영어교과교육학회 2015 영어교과교육 Vol.14 No.1

Research studies on written corrective feedback have mostly focused on teacher input to students on their writing. However, this study concentrates on the effect of teacher feedback on student motivation and how it may affect their efforts to improve on future writing. Participants of this study consisted of 16 EFL students engaged in an English writing course in a Korean university. These participants were administered two self-report questionnaires to determine their affective responses to teacher written feedback on their writing. Results indicated that these students considered marking of all errors, especially errors in grammar, were very important to them to improve on new writing efforts. Teacher written feedback on organizational errors and vocabulary were also somewhat important to them. Feedback on content or ideas, punctuation and spelling were of lesser or no value to them. Findings also indicated that if these student preferences for feedback were utilized by the teacher, it seemed to have a positive motivational impact on these students to improve their writing skills. These results were triangulated with student interviews and teacher observations. The study concluded with a discussion of pedagogical implications, limitations and possible areas for additional research.

Satellite-based Drought Forecasting: Research Trends, Challenges, and Future Directions

        ( Bokyung Son ),( Jungho Im ),( Sumin Park ),( Jaese Lee ) 대한원격탐사학회 2021 大韓遠隔探査學會誌 Vol.37 No.4

Drought forecasting is crucial to minimize the damage to food security and water resources caused by drought. Satellite-based drought research has been conducted since 1980s, which includes drought monitoring, assessment, and prediction. Unlike numerous studies on drought monitoring and assessment for the past few decades, satellite-based drought forecasting has gained popularity in recent years. For successful drought forecasting, it is necessary to carefully identify the relationships between drought factors and drought conditions by drought type and lead time. This paper aims to provide an overview of recent research trends and challenges for satellite-based drought forecasts focusing on lead times. Based on the recent literature survey during the past decade, the satellite-based drought forecasting studies were divided into three groups by lead time (i.e., short-term, sub-seasonal, and seasonal) and reviewed with the characteristics of the predictors (i.e., drought factors) and predictands (i.e., drought indices). Then, three major challenges-difficulty in model generalization, model resolution and feature selection, and saturation of forecasting skill improvement-were discussed, which led to provide several future research directions of satellite-based drought forecasting.

Motivating EFL Students to Engage in Free Voluntary Reading: Does the Format Make a Difference?

        ( Bokyung Murray ) 21세기영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학21 Vol.27 No.1

Several studies have suggested that free voluntary reading (FVR) is a very useful pedagogical resource to enhance student proficiency in learning English. However, a persistent problem has existed on how best to motivate students to engage in this activity. This was a qualitative study to explore the possibility that reading format, either digital or print, may make a difference in encouraging students to participate more willingly in this activity. Four students in an English reading comprehension class volunteered to be involved in this study. All students in the class were allowed to select reading materials, both in digital and print formats, during the course of the semester. The four study participants were subjected to interviews, observations, and provided diary entries to describe their reactions to reading in these different formats. Charts were developed to present data from observations. Findings indicated that materials in both formats had a generally positive effect on encouraging these students to read, however, their preferences were somewhat inconclusive, with two students favoring digital and two preferred print materials. Data from observations was more definitive and indicated that the digital format was the preferred method for FVR. The study concluded with a discussion of limitations, and some possible implications for the classroom.

Hematopoietic stem cell expansion and generation: the ways to make a breakthrough

        Bokyung Park,Keon Hee Yoo,김창성 대한혈액학회 2015 Blood Research Vol.50 No.4

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the first field where human stem cell therapy was successful. Flooding interest on human stem cell therapy to cure previously incurable diseases is largely indebted to HSCT success. Allogeneic HSCT has been an im-portant modality to cure various diseases including hematologic malignancies, various non-malignant hematologic diseases, primary immunodeficiency diseases, and inborn errors of metabolism, while autologous HSCT is generally performed to rescue bone mar-row aplasia following high-dose chemotherapy for solid tumors or multiple myeloma. Recently, HSCs are also spotlighted in the field of regenerative medicine for the amelio-ration of symptoms caused by neurodegenerative diseases, heart diseases, and others. Although the demand for HSCs has been growing, their supply often fails to meet the demand of the patients needing transplant due to a lack of histocompatible donors or a limited cell number. This review focuses on the generation and large-scale expansion of HSCs, which might overcome current limitations in the application of HSCs for clinical use. Furthermore, current proof of concept to replenish hematological homeostasis from non-hematological origin will be covered.

      • Effect of Ascorbic Acid on Chondrogenic Differentiation and Pyridinoline Content in ATDC5 Cells

        Bokyung Kim,Mi-Hwa Park,Seungcheol Lim,Mihyang Kim 한국식품영양과학회 2021 한국식품영양과학회 학술대회발표집 Vol.2021 No.10

We studied the effects of ascorbic acid on chondrogenic differentation and pyridinoline content in ATDC5 cells. Chondrogenic ATDC5 cells were cultured with various concentrations of ascorbic acid for the period of differentiation. In order to examine the degree of chondrogenic differentiation, it is tested by alcian blue staining. The content of pyridinoline, which is a collagen crosslinking substance produced after osteoblast differentiation, was also examined. Moreover, the expression of differentiation markers such as RUNX2 was measured using Western blot analysis. ATDC5 cells did not show cytotoxicity at the ascorbic acid concentration range of 10∼200 μg/ml. The alcian blue staining was increased by addition of ascorbic acid to the control group. ATDC5 cells treated with ascorbic acid upregulated the expression of Collagen Ⅱ, RUNX2, LOX and LOX2. Moreover, the pyridinoline content was increased by the addition of the ascorbic acid on ATDC5 cells. Therefore, these results suggest that the ascorbic acid has pharmacological potential to modulate differentiation of cartilage.

An Investigation on Ultimate Strength of High Strength Aluminum Alloys Four-Bolted Connections with Out-of-plane Deformation

BoKyung Hwang,TaeSoo Kim 한국강구조학회 2019 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.19 No.4

An experimental study for the structural behaviors of high strength aluminum alloys (7075-T6) single shear bolted connections with three types of bolt arrays has been carried out by authors. Out-of-plane deformation in the direction of plate thickness (hereafter, curling) occurred in some specimens with long end distances parallel to the direction of applied force. It is known that the curling reduced ultimate strength for curled specimens and it contributed to deciding the ultimate state of 7075-T6 bolted connections. In this paper, fi nite element analysis model has been developed based on the previous experimental results of 7075-T6 four-bolted connections and previous fi nite element analysis procedures related to singe shear bolted connections. The validation of fi nite element analysis method for predicting the ultimate behaviors of 7075- T6 bolted connections was verifi ed through the comparison of test results and analysis results. Additional analyses with extended parameters of end and edge distances were conducted. As a result, strength reduction ratio (up to maximum 19%) by curling was investigated quantitatively and the curling occurrence conditions for end distance and edge distance were presented. In addition, analysis strengths were compared with design strengths by AAA (American Aluminum Association), AISI (American Iron Steel Institute) design specifi cations and proposed equation for 6061-T6 aluminum alloys four-bolted connections. Lastly, revised strength equation was suggested considering the actual fracture mechanism at ultimate state and curling infl uence (strength drop) by bolt bearing action.
