        An in vitro Study on the Biocompatibility of Titanium Implants Made by Selective Laser Melting

        Customized medical implants obtained by selective laser melting have an important applicability due the accurate architecture which promotes the osteointegration, osteoconduction, and osteoinduction. This study assessed the in vitro effect of titanium scaffolds, both pure and covered with a layer of hydroxyapatite, on mesenchymal stem cells harvested from various oral tissues. Eight titanium implants were manufactured by selective laser melting, obtaining a porosity of 63.4% and a pore size of 600 μm. Four matrices were covered with nano-hydroxyapatite. Four lines of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the apical papilla, the dental pulp, the inter-radicular bone, and the tuberosity bone were seeded on the implants. The cells’ proliferation, viability, and differentiation into the osteoblastic lineage were assessed after 18 days, using light microscopy and fluorescence. Our results indicated that the titanium matrices did not exert cytotoxic effect. The cells seeded on titanium matrices conditioned with nanohydroxyapatite had a slightly higher proliferation rate. The stem cells isolated from the inter-radicular bone had the most intense proliferation and differentiation towards the osteoblastic lineage showing a nodular architecture. In conclusion, the oral mesenchymal stem cells have the potential to promote and improve bone regeneration when associated with the titanium scaffolds manufactured by selective laser melting, either non-coated or coated with hydroxyapatite. These findings open new perspectives for the bone reconstruction in the oral and maxillofacial surgery field.

        노인의 여가활동과 삶의 질에 관한 탐색적 연구

        본 연구는 노인의 여가활동과 삶의 만족도에 관한 탐색적 연구이다. 일반적으로 노인들의 여가는 공식적인 사회적 역할보다는 비공식적 사회참가가 많은 것이 그 특징이다. 연구결과에 의하면, 여가활동을 통한 여가만족이 노년기의 삶의 질과 관련성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 여가만족에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 사회적응력이 여가참가수준과 여가만족 긍정적으로 기여하며, 그리고 타인과의 밀접한 관계가 의미 있는 여가활동 참여가 성공적인 노화의 중요한 요소이다. This article is an exploratory study on the relationship between spare time activity and quality of life of the elderly. In general, the leisure of the elderlies are informal social participation. As a result of the research, there are strong relationship between leisure satisfaction and quality of life on the elderly. And leisure satisfaction is related to leisure participation which connected with others.

        상악동을 침범하는 역위성 유두종의 증례보고

        The present study reports a case of inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity and infiltrating into the maxillary sinus. Inverted papilloma is an uncommon and locally aggressive benign tumor of the sinonasal region. The patient, 51-year-old male, presented with unilateral nasal obstruction and periodic swelling on the palate without pain. Enhanced CT scan revealed a heterogeneously enhancing solid mass in the nasal cavity and infiltrating into the right maxillary sinus, as well as an incidental, secondarily infected residual cyst m the periapical area of the right maxillary canine. The sinonasal mass was revealed as an inverted papilloma on histopathologic examination.

        Provisional implant의 임상적 적용례

        It has been reported that for implatns to become osseointegrated, they must heal in the absence of functional loads for 4 to 6 months. The provisional implants were designed to support provisional restorations and to allow for load-free osseointegration of definitive implants, while the was provided with immediate esthetic and function. In addition, the provisional implant protects graft site. Also the provisional implant provides anchorage for orthodontic treatment and reconstructs vertical dimension in edentulous condyle fracture to practice functional therapy. The provisional implant system is a sound and economical method to achieve patient's immediate masticatory and esthetic function. Three cases are presented to document and illustrate the clinical application.

        Fragments d'un paradis : 미지의 세계에 대한 갈망 또는 내적 영토에서의 부동의 여행

        Fragments d'un paradis는 1944년 봄, 약 두 달에 걸쳐 구술되어 미완성인 채로 남겨져 있다가 1948년에 발표된 작품이다. 1939년-1945년, 이 기간은 지오노에게 시련의 시간이었다. 두 차례에 걸쳐 수감되었었고, 작품 활동도 그 이전에 비해 상당히 저조한 편이었다. 세계 대전, 수감생활 등의 시련을 겪으면서 새로운 글쓰기를 모색하는 성찰의 시간이었다고 할 수 있다. 이 시기 이후에 작가 지오노의 글쓰기가 새로운 방향으로 전환되어 chroniques romanesques와 Hussard 연작으로 이어지며, 자연과 인간이라는 주제보다는 인간과 역사, 고독과 권태 등의 인간 조건과 존재의 테마로 바뀌게 된다. 그런 의미에서 Fragments d'un paradis는 인간과 자연, 우주와의 관계를 보여주는 마지막 작품이라 할 수 있을 것이며, 글쓰기 방식의 전환기에 쓰여져 미완성으로 발표된 이 작품에서 새로운 삶을 찾아 떠나는<인디언호>의 항해는 아마도 새로운 글쓰기 방향을 모색하는 작가 지오노가 절감하는 창작의 고뇌의 여행으로 읽어 볼 수 있을 것이다. 이 소고에서는 대양을 꿈꾸며 새로운 삶의 가능성을 찾아 떠나는 <인디언호> 선원들의 항해 의미와 그들이 항해 중에 체험하며 꿈꾸는 진정한 세계, 우주의 요소들이 화합하여 보여주는 미지의 세계, 그리고 그 미지의 세계를 통해 나타나고 있는 작가의 글쓰기에 대한 갈망을 중심으로 살펴보기로 한다.

        CT 영상을 이용한 악골 골수염의 경조직 변화에 관한 연구

        Purpose : To assess the clinical findings and hard tissue changes of osteomyelitis of the jaws using computed tomographic (CT) image analysis. Materials and Methods : We reviewed and interpreted the CT images of 163 patients (64 males and 99 females, age range from 10 to 87 years) who visited the Seoul National University Dental Hospital from April 23, 2006 to December 31, 2008 and were diagnosed as osteomyelitis of the jaws through clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic examination. Each CT findings was investigated for frequency, correlation with age and gender. Results : Of the 163 patients, 31 (19.0%) were affected on the maxilla, 135 (82.8%) were affected on the mandible, and 3 (1.8%) were affected on the both jaws simultaneously. The mean age of the patients who were affected on the maxilla was 61.0 years and that of the patients who were affected on the mandible was 56.2 years. On the maxilla, the most frequent site of disease was the posterior area (83.9%) and on the mandible, mandibular body (83.0%), followed by angle (48.1%), ramus (38.5%), condyle (13.3%), incisal area (9.6%), and coronoid process (3.0%). Among the 31 maxillary osteomyelitis, defect in the trabecular bone was observed in 28 (90.3%), osteosclerosis 20 (64.5%), defect in the cortical bone 27 (87.1%), sequestrum 17 (54.8%), and periosteal reaction 2 (6.5%). Among the 135 mandibular osteomyelitis, defect in the trabecular bone was observed in 100 (74.1%), osteosclerosis 104 (77.0%), defect in the cortical bone 116 (85.9%), sequestrum 36 (26.7%), and periosteal reaction 67 (49.6%). Conclusion : Of our cases, the maxillary osteomyelitis was visibly observed more frequently in females than males. The incidence is the highest in seventies (28.8%) and the lowest in teens (3.1%). The osteomyelitis of the jaws was observed more frequently in males than females before the age of 50, and observed more frequently in females after the age of 50. The most noticeable point was that the sequestrum was observed more often on maxillary osteomyelitis and the periosteal reaction was observed more often on mandibular osteomyelitis.         The EIT(Electrical Impedance Tomography) system is one of the methods for tomography technologies. The EIT measurement is less expensive than other methods because the system is relatively simple and easy to construct compared to other methods. In this study, the real voltage values were compared to theoretical values. The rmse(root mean square error) of measured data was 2.99%. So that, this EIT system circuit was a accuracy circuit for a reconstruction algorithm.

        Decreased Chitotriosidase Activity and Levels in Familial Mediterranean Fever

        Different studies have demonstrated changes in chitotriosidase (ChT) activity and concentrations in multiple diseases. However, changes in ChT activity and concentrations have not been concurrently evaluated in patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). In this study, we analyzed the changes in serum ChT activity and concentrations in patients with FMF. The study included a total of 80 patients with FMF and 80 healthy controls. ChT enzyme activity and concentrations were measured and then compared between the groups. ChT activity was measured by using fluorometric ELISA and ChT concentrations were measured by using colorimetric ELISA methods. The median ChT activity was 10.00 (6.00–15.00) nmol/mL/hr in the patients and 14.00 (6.25–20.75) nmol/mL/hr in the controls. There was a statistically significant difference in the ChT activity between the controls and patients (P = 0.027). The median ChT concentrations were 65.40 (46.20–84.92) pg/mL and 125.00 (75.72–143.95) pg/mL in the patients and controls, respectively (P < 0.001), which were expressed as median percentiles (25th–75th). Additionally, we found no correlation between C-reactive protein and ChT activity (P = 0.978, r = 0.003) and concentrations (P = 0.446, r = −0.87). Serum ChT enzyme activity and concentrations may not be considered as a biomarker in FMF patients taking colchicine. New studies are needed to evaluate the changes of enzyme activity and concentration in colchicine-negative patients.
