      • Ten Years of Tutoring in Shadow Education: A Narrative Inquiry into Industry Features and Evolution in China

Bin Hua,Kevin Wai Ho Yung 아시아질적탐구학회 2022 아시아질적탐구 Vol.1 No.1

The modernized private tutoring in China appeared in the 1990s and then grew at full speed to become one of the world’s most extensive shadow education systems. Since 2010, the industry has entered an era of deepening institutionalization and capitalization. This paper, through the narrative of an expert tutor, illuminates his experiences of tutoring and managing in this industry from 2010 to 2020 in Mainland China. The narrative was constructed through the tutor’s chronological reflection, which was stimulated by various electronic files he produced during the tutoring period and his ongoing conversations with former colleagues. In making sense of his narrative, the researchers have discussed a neglected phenomenon, three shining points, six gray areas, and four developmental stages of shadow education to demonstrate the industry features and evolution. Through discussing these issues, this paper finds its originality in illustrating at a micro level the industry’s operational mechanism, such as tutor training, curriculum, instruction, and after-class management, from a unique perspective of a tutoring practitioner and entrepreneur.

      • Changing roles and identities of interpreters in the past four decades. An analysis of Chinese discourse on interpreting through the lens of social practice theory

Binhua Wang 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 2021 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.01

This paper examines how interpreting and interpreters are perceived and represented in by practitioners, trainers and researchers in the changing environment during the past four decades in China. The focus of analysis is how the economic, socio-political and technological developments in China’s ‘Reform and Opening-up’ have been conditioning the social practice of interpreting, particularly the roles and identities of interpreters. Based on an analysis sifting through about 800 articles on interpreting published in quality (CSSCI/CORE) journals in China published in the past 40 years, two major questions are examined: 1) How have the social practice of interpreting and the roles and identities of interpreters been represented and perceived by practitioners, trainers and researchers? 2) How have they evolved with the changing environment during the past four decades? Viewing interpreting as a social practice, this study employs an adapted three-element model from social practice theory as the analytic framework. Through content analysis of the published discourse on interpreting, the ‘competences’, ‘meanings’ and ‘practitioners’ of the interpreting activity in different periods are identified. By doing so, the meta-discourse on the roles and identities of interpreters is highlighted, the pattern of evolution is identified and the role of economic, socio-political and technological developments in shaping interpreting as a social practice is revealed.

Research on rib-to-diaphragm welded connection by means of hot spot stress approach

Binhua Wang,Pengmin Lu,Yuhong Shao 국제구조공학회 2015 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.18 No.1

The cutout hole locating at the place of rib-to-diaphragm welded connection is adopted to minimize the restraint, which is caused by the floor-beam web to rib rotation at the support due to the unsymmetrical loads in orthotropic deck. In practice, an inevitable problem is that there is a large number of welding joint's cracks formed at the edge of cutout hole. In this study, a comparative experiment is carried out with two types of cutout hole, the circular arc transition and the vertical transition. The fatigue life estimation of specimens is investigated with the application of the structural hot spot stress approach by finite element analyses. The results are compared with the ones of the fatigue tests which are carried out on these full-scale specimens. Factors affecting the stress range are also studied.

Identification of cross-section loads for steel beam with simple cross-sectional shape based on measured strain and its application

Qingyi Xiang,Pengmin Lu,Binhua Wang 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.12

A new strain gauge layout method on the structural surface is proposed to identify the six-component loads in cross-section. Numerical simulation of a cantilever beam and an industrial case study, i.e., identification of hinge joint loads on excavator working device under actual excavating condition, are presented to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed method for industrial scale problems. The hinge joint loads deduced from the stick’s sixcomponent cross-section loads identified by the new method were compared with the values calculated by traditional method, and the recurrence degree of stress and fatigue cumulative damage of the stick’s fatigue critical points were also compared. The maximum deviation between the actual damage of each selected measuring point and the damage caused by the identified hinge joint loads was only 1.69 %. The field test results showed that the new method could be conveniently applied with high identification accuracy for complicated actual loads.

The Improved Velocity-based Models for Pedestrian Dynamics

( Xiao Yang ),( Zheng Qin ),( Binhua Wan ),( Renwei Zhang ),( Huihui Wang ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2017 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.11 No.9

Three different improvements of the Velocity-based model were proposed in a minimal velocity-based pedestrian model. The improvements of the models are based on the different agent forms. The different representations of the agent lead to different results, in this paper, we simulated the pedestrian movements in some typical scenes by using different agent forms, and the agent forms included the circles with different radiuses, the ellipse and the multi-circle stand for one pedestrian. We have proposed a novel model of pedestrian dynamics to optimize the simulation. Our model specifies the pedestrian behavior using a dynamic ellipse, which is parameterized by their velocity and can improve the simulaton accuracy. We found a representation of the pedestrian much closer to the reality. The phenomena of the self-organization can be observable in the improved models.

Modeling and control strategy of flexible joint servo system in humanoid manipulator driven by tendon-sheath

        Meng Yin,Dongyang Shang,Binhua Huang,Xinyu Wu,Wei Feng 대한기계학회 2022 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.36 No.5

The control effect of rotational speed in joints directly affects the motion accuracy of a humanoid manipulator driven by tendon-sheath. The dynamic parameters of the joint have time-varying characteristics due to the posture change of the manipulator. The joint driven by tendon-sheath has a specific torsional stiffness, so flexibility should be considered in the humanoid manipulator’s servo system. The time-varying of the parameters in the servo system and the joint flexibility can cause fluctuation of the output speed. To improve the motion accuracy of the humanoid manipulator, a fuzzy-tuned PI control strategy is used to suppress the instability of the output speed. First, the change law of the inertia on the motor side of the flexible joint is calculated by the dynamics equation of the humanoid manipulator. Next, a mathematical model of the joint is established, and the transfer function from the load speed to the electromagnetic torque is obtained. Furthermore, according to the pole-placement strategy, the fuzzy-tuned PI controller parameters are selected appropriately for the manipulator in different postures. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulations and control experiments of the manipulator. The results show that the fuzzy-tuned PI control strategy can significantly reduce the tracking errors and improve the control performance of the manipulator.

PCR-reverse dot blot human papillomavirus genotyping as a primary screening test for cervical cancer in a hospital-based cohort

        Yafang Kang,Pengming Sun,Xiaodan Mao,Binhua Dong,Guanyu Ruan,Lihua Chen 대한부인종양학회 2019 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.30 No.3

Objective: To evaluate the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-reverse-dot-blot (RDB) human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping test as a feasible assay for the cervical cancer primary screening. Methods: In a hospital-based cohort, a total of 21,568 women were voluntarily enrolled from March 2009 to November 2016 for evaluating the 3 current cervical cancer screening strategies: co-test, cytology primary and high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) primary by using PCRRDB HPV genotyping and liquid-based cytology (thinprep cytologic test [TCT]). Women with HR-HPV infection and/or abnormal cytology were referred for colposcopy, and the biopsy or conization was performed according to the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) guidelines. Results: Overall, 18.20% (3,935/21,568) of the women were detected as HR-HPVpositive, 5.04% (1,088/21,568) were diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 or higher (CIN2+), and 3.43% (739/21,568) with CIN3+. The cumulative incidence rates for CIN2+/CIN3+ in patients with HPV-16/18-positive were 48.28%/37.20%, while they were 0.86%/0.38%, 0.30%/0.15% and 0.18%/0.09% in cytology-negative, HR-HPV-negative and co-test-negative population, respectively. Using CIN2+ and CIN3+ as the observed endpoints, the sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV) of HR-HPV genotyping as a primary screening tool were 90.99%/99.49% and 91.57%/99.80%. Moreover, using HR-HPV genotyping primary screening could detect the same more CIN2+/CIN3+ cases in baselinedetection as co-testing (990/700 vs. 991/701) and far more than cytology primary screening (903/656, p<0.05). It also achieved the lowest misdiagnosis rate (8.01%/5.02%). Although HPV genotyping primary screening required an increased number of colposcopies (2.75/3.89 per CIN2+/CIN3+ case), it yielded an acceptable rate. Conclusions: The PCR-RDB HPV genotyping test is a cost-effective and beneficial cervical cancer primary screening for hospital-based opportunistic screening.

        Pengming Sun,Yiyi Song,Guanyu Ruan,Xiaodan Mao,Yafang Kang,Binhua Dong,Fen Lin 대한부인종양학회 2017 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.28 No.5

Objective: To determine the clinical significance of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-reverse dot blot (RDB) human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping assay in cervical cancerscreening. Methods: A total of 10,442 women attending the Fujian Provincial Maternity and Children'sHealth Hospital were evaluated using the liquid-based cytology (thinprep cytologic test[TCT]) and the PCR-RDB HPV test. Women with HPV infection and/or abnormal cytologywere referred for colposcopy and biopsy. For HPV DNA sequencing, 120 specimens wererandomly selected. Pathological diagnosis was used as the gold standard. Results: Using the PCR-RDB HPV test, overall HPV prevalence was 20.57% (2,148/10,442)and that of high-risk (HR)-HPV infection was 18.68% (1,951/10,442). There was 99.2%concordance between HPV PCR-RDB testing and sequencing. In this studied population, the most common HR-HPV types were HPV-16, -52, -58, -18, -53, -33, and -51, rank fromhigh to low. HPV-16, -18, -58, -59, and -33 were the top 5 prevalent genotypes in cervicalcancer but HPV-16, -18, -59, -45, and -33 were the top 5 highest risk factors for cancer (oddsratio [OR]=34.964, 7.278, 6.728, 6.101, and 3.658; all p<0.05, respectively). Among 10,442cases, 1,278 had abnormal cytology results, of which, the HR-HPV positivity rate was 83.02%(1,061/1,278). To screen for cervical cancer by PCR-RDB HPV testing, when using CIN2+,CIN3+, and cancer as observed endpoints, the sensitivity was 90.43%, 92.61%, and 94.78%and the negative predictive value (NPV) was 99.06%, 99.42%, and 99.78%, respectively. PCRRDBHPV and TCT co-testing achieved the highest sensitivity and NPV. Conclusion: For cervical cancer screening, the PCR-RDB HPV test can provide a reliable andsensitive clinical reference.
