A simplified matrix stiffness method for analysis of composite and prestressed beams
Biljana Deretić-Stojanović,Svetlana M. Kostić 국제구조공학회 2017 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.24 No.1
The paper presents the simplified matrix stiffness method for analysis of composite and prestressed beams. The method is based on the previously developed "exact" analysis method that uses the mathematical theory of linear integral operators to derive all relations without any mathematical simplifications besides inevitable idealizations related to the material rheological properties. However, the method is limited since the closed-form solution can be found only for specific forms of the concrete creep function. In this paper, the authors proposed the simplified analysis method by introducing the assumption that the unknown deformations change linearly with the concrete creep function. Adopting this assumption, the nonhomogeneous integral system of equations of the "exact" method simplifies to the system of algebraic equations that can be easily solved. Therefore, the proposed method is more suitable for practical applications. Its high level of accuracy in comparison to the "exact" method is preserved, which is illustrated on the numerical example. Also, it is more accurate than the well-known EM method.
Adaptive Channel-Matched Extended Alamouti Space-Time Code Exploiting Partial Feedback
Biljana Badic,Markus Rupp,Hans Weinrichter 한국전자통신연구원 2004 ETRI Journal Vol.26 No.5
Since the publication of Alamouti’s famous space-time block code, various quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QSTBC) for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) fading channels for more than two transmit antennas have been proposed. It has been shown that these codes cannot achieve full diversity at full rate. In this paper, we present a simple feedback scheme for rich scattering (flat Rayleigh fading) MIMO channels that improves the coding gain and diversity of a QSTBC for 2n (n = 3, 4,L) transmit antennas. The relevant channel state information is sent back from the receiver to the transmitter quantized to one or two bits per code block. In this way, signal transmission with an improved coding gain and diversity near to the maximum diversity order is achieved. Such high diversity can be exploited with either a maximum-likelihood receiver or low-complexity zero-forcing receiver.

This paper analyses the degree of integration of the BRIC countries on a regional and global basis, achieved by using daily equity index level data. The paper concludes that a high degree of integration exists between the BRIC countries and their respective regions, and to a lesser extent, the rest of the world. Regional trends are found to have a much greater influence than world trends upon the stock return process of the BRIC countries. The world index returns, and most likely the US equity market returns, have a significant influence upon the variance of returns seen across Brazil, Russia and India. China is the only country where there exists a negative relationship between volatility spillover effects on a regional and global basis. This suggests existence of diversification opportunities for investment managers. Global portfolio managers can still add value from investments in these countries, however the increased levels of integration of these economies highlight the need for portfolio stock selection strategies as well as investment in specific growth areas within these economies, rather than taking a position in the country index.
The Immunomodulation Effect of Aronia Extract Lacks Association with Its Antioxidant Anthocyanins
Jin Xu,Biljana Mojsoska 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.4
Polyphenols comprise a diverse group of molecules with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. To compare the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory capacity of Aronia melanocarpa berries (chokeberries), recognized for their high content of anthocyanins, a noncytotoxic isolation method was developed to obtain high-purity anthocyanins in the extract. The antioxidative activity of the extract, the anthocyanin-rich fraction (AF) was determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical and ferric-reducing ability of plasma along with resveratrol as a reference. The immunomodulation properties were assessed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human monocytes mono mac 6. The isolated AF, containing six different anthocyanins, exhibited a stronger antioxidative capacity compared to resveratrol. Resveratrol enhanced tumor necrosis factor-α and reduced interleukin-10 (IL-10) production by LPS, whereas AF only had a slight effect in reducing IL-10. These results demonstrated that there was no major relationship between the antioxidative effect and immunomodulation capacities of AF and resveratrol. The immunomodulatory activity of the extract is associated with bioactive compounds in Aronia other than its anthocyanins.
Antioxidant Activity of Nepeta nuda L. ssp. nuda Essential Oil Rich in Nepetalactones from Greece
George Gkinis,Biljana Bozin,Neda Mimica-Dukic,Olga Tzakou 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.5
Essential oils from air-dried leaves and verticillasters of Nepeta nuda ssp. nuda from Greece were analyzed by means of gas chromatography-flame ionization detection and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The dominant constituent in the verticillaster oils was 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone (75.7%). The main metabolites of the leaf oil were 1,8-cineole (16.7%), 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone (24.7%), and caryophyllene oxide (16.3%). The oils were examined for their antioxidant activity. Neutralization of stable 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical ranged from 10.83% (2.50μg/mL) to 58.64% (50.00μg/mL) for verticillaster oil and from 6.25% (2.50μg/mL) to 57.79% (50.00μg/mL) for leaf oil. The essential oil from verticillasters had significant effects on lipid peroxidation (in the range of 41.18–59.23%), compared to tert-butylated hydroxytoluene (37.04%). In contrast, the essential oil from leaves exhibited pro-oxidant activity at the highest concentration applied.

The paper analyses the corrosion behaviour of both naturally and artificially aged AA2024 aluminium alloy in NaCl solutionin the presence of the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA). The differences between these two aging tempers in termsof resistance to general corrosion are explained as well as the differences in terms of pit formation and pit growth. Basedon the values of the polarisation resistance and the corrosion current density, the general corrosion resistance of the alloyis determined in the absence and in the presence of BTA. The resistance to pit formation and pit growth is determined onthe basis of the polarisation measurements results. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the expected differences in theappearance and size of the pits formed in naturally aged and artificially aged alloy. In the presence of the corrosion inhibitorBTA, for both aging tempers of the alloy, the corrosion resistance is significantly higher compared to the resistance in thesolution without the inhibitor. The value of the polarisation resistance for both aging tempers increases over time. However,at the same time, the value of the constant phase element increases as well. An explanation for this phenomenon is provided. The calculated average value of the thickness of the adsorbed inhibitor layer on the surface of the aluminium alloy is inaccordance with the inhibitor protective ability for both aging tempers.

A predominantly positive view is shown in engagement literature in terms of positive actor engagement (PNE) expressions and outcomes. However, business practices indicate that the understanding of actors being negatively engaged is important. Yet a few studies in marketing, which attempt to conceptualise negative actor engagement (NAE), do not have a consensus as for whether NE and PE are reciprocal or NE is a distinct construct with a different nomological network and process. The purpose of this study is to conceptualise and operationalise NAE. Built on Li et al.’s (2018) conceptualisation of actor engagement valence, this paper follows Churchill’s (1979) methods of scale development and operationalises the construct of NAE. By developing and validating a NAE scale in specific online learning servcie platforms, we address this identified literature gap. Specifically, this study derives four NAE dimensions, including annoyance, anxiety, futitlity and failed expectation, which we proceed to validate within a nomological net of conceptual relationships in relation to the engagement behaviours (learning, sharing and endorsing). We conclude with an overview of key managerial and scholarly implications arising from this research. This marks the first study in the marketing discipline to operationalise NAE.

Background: A biomarker that is of great interest in relation to adverse cardiovascular events is soluble ST2 (sST2), a member of the interleukin family. Considering that metabolic syndrome (MetS) is accompanied by a proinflammatory state, we aimed to assess the relationship between sST2 and left ventricular (LV) structure and function in patients with MetS. Methods: A multicentric, cross-sectional study was conducted on180 MetS subjects with normal LV ejection fraction as determined by echocardiography. LV hypertrophy (LVH) was defined as an LV mass index greater than the gender-specific upper limit of normal as determined by echocardiography. LV diastolic dysfunction (DD) was assessed by pulse-wave and tissue Doppler imaging. sST2 was measured by using a quantitative monoclonal ELISA assay. Results: LV mass index (β=0.337, P<0 .001, linear regression) was independently associated with sST2 concentrations. Increased sST2 was associated with an increased likelihood of LVH [Exp (B)=2.20, P=0.048, logistic regression] and increased systolic blood pressure [Exp (B)=1.02, P=0.05, logistic regression]. Comparing mean sST2 concentrations (adjusted for age, body mass index, gender) between different LV remodeling patterns, we found the greatest sST2 level in the group with concentric hypertrophy. There were no differences in sST2 concentration between groups with and without LV DD. Conclusions: Increased sST2 concentration in patients with MetS was associated with a greater likelihood of exhibiting LVH. Our results suggest that inflammation could be one of the principal triggering mechanisms for LV remodeling in MetS.

Ca-alginate particles (CA) and alginate-impregnated hemp fibers (AH) (both, as prepared, dried, and rehydrated)were used as adsorbents for removal of Ni (II) ions from water. Adsorption was examined in the batch system andexperimentally obtained data were analyzed by both linear and nonlinear curve fitting using pseudo-first and pseudo-secondorderrate, as well as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips equations. The concentration of Ni (II) ions was measured by atomicabsorption spectrophotometry, while the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used for characterization of adsorbentsurface, before and after the adsorption. Although all tested samples showed similar adsorption capacities of 12 mg/g, it wasfound that rehydration improves adsorption characteristics of AH and increases the removal efficiency above 90 %. Adsorption of Ni (II) ions can be sufficiently described by both kinetic models and Sips isotherm equation, and this relativelyfast process presumably occurs through the mechanism of physisorption and ion-exchange. The obtained results proved thatCa-alginate particles and alginate-impregnated hemp fibers have good potential to reduce nickel concentrations in a costeffectiveand efficient manner.

A novel preparation for human use was investigated for probiotic properties of new lactobacilli isolates from oral and fecal samples of children. Identified strains were Lactobacillus plantarum (Lac1, Lac2, Lac6, and Lac7), Lactobacillus casei (Lac3), and Lactobacillus paracasei (Lac4). Isolates were non-hemolytic, produced organic acids, were tolerant to wide ranges of temperature, NaCl, and pH, and were highly resistant to lysozyme, acidity, and bile salts. High survival rates in artificial gastric and intestinal fluids indicated abilities to survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Antimicrobial activities were restricted to bacteria, attributed to low pH values. Isolated strains possessed good aggregation abilities, high hydrophobicity values, and moderate abilities to adhere to HCT 116 cells. Substantial probiotic features were identified for all isolates. Lac2, Lac6, and Lac7 were identified as the most advantageous candidates for further study of other probiotic and technological properties.
