      • Memory Access Pattern Analysis of CNN Type Application on CPU Model

Bick, Konstantin 서울대학교 대학원 2019 국내석사

        RANK : 247359

Neural Networks and especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) gained a lot of attraction recently as they excel in computer vision fields like object detection and image classification. CNNs generally contain different layer types that are executed alternately. An analysis of such layer based CNN is necessary to draw conclusions on how to modify current computer architecture in order to optimize the performance of CNNs. This thesis analyzes a typical CNN with a focus on the efficiency of caching and prefetching. Based on the findings an adaptive L2 cache prefetching scheme is proposed that combines two existing prefetchers and overcomes their layer specific inefficiencies. Moreover, a cache hierarchy bypassing the L2 cache is proposed that reduces power consumption while only slightly sacrificing overall performance.

      • Composers on the cultural front: Aaron Copland and Hanns Eisler in Hollywood (Germany)

        Bick, Sally M. A Yale University 2001 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

Two composers who were able to close the gap in Hollywood between the high and low cultural formations were modernist art composers Aaron Copland and Hanns Eisler. Though each came from different countries, Copland an American, Eisler from Germany, they nevertheless shared similar political ideals and a commitment towards the values expressed by an emerging cultural front movement in their respective worlds. Modern music, they felt, needed to participate in the creation of a meaningful social formation. With that in mind, both turned to film, and eventually to Hollywood, reconfiguring their elevated styles to comply with the forms of a commercial industry. The consequences of their work posed a significant challenge to Hollywood's conventional practices as they became the first composers to advocate directly for and introduce high modernist strategies to film narratives of political and socially charged dramatic pictures. The fruits of their experiences embody two forms: their own original film scores and their published writings about the nature and practice of Hollywood film music. Both composers drew on highly innovative techniques and strategies that were culled from their individual backgrounds as modernist art composers. Copland for example, exploits a neo-classic idiom in Of Mice and Men, his first Hollywood film score, to achieve a contemporary musical Americanist aesthetic. The musical style introduces Hollywood to a new simplicity and expression that in turn, becomes the Hollywood model for narratives of dramatic American content. Eisler, a product of the second Viennese School, is the first to exploit serial techniques and atonality in Hollywood for the score of Hangmen also Die. Copland and Eisler wrote extensively about Hollywood film music. Copland's perspective is more pragmatic, advocating stylistic variety for non-diegetic music, yet reinforcing Hollywood's ideological practice of subordinating the music in order not to detract from the primacy and realism of the screen's image and narrative. Eisler, in collaboration with Theodor Adorno, presents in Composing for the Films a highly polemical Marxist critique, challenging the ideological principles and standards of Hollywood's film music by promoting a contrapuntal or contrasting expression of the film's image and narrative.

      • Governing the free sea: The Dutch West India Company and commercial politics, 1618-1645

Bick, Alexander Princeton University 2012 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

This dissertation takes a micro-historical approach to examine a single meeting of the board of directors of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) in the fall of 1645. At this meeting the directors learned that Portuguese planters in northeastern Brazil had risen in open revolt, a development that would cripple the company's new Atlantic empire. By meticulously reconstructing negotiations over five months---based on ordinary and secret minutes, memoranda, notes, diaries, letters, pamphlets, newspapers, and printed books---the dissertation reveals the decision-making mechanisms and institutions employed by a joint stock company to rule a major colony in the New World. It explores the nature of the WIC's relationship to the decentralized organs of the Dutch state and--in contrast to familiar images of the sober Dutch merchant--demonstrates both the important role played by the Dutch nobility and the use and adaptation of Iberian models for colonial administration. It examines the specific role of the Leiden scholar Johannes de Laet and, looking back at earlier meetings in the company's history, reinterprets negotiations over the company's charter and the relationship between arguments over free trade and slavery. In opposition to explanations that emphasize regional conflicts within the United Provinces or the inability to attract settlers, the dissertation explains the collapse of Dutch Brazil as resulting from long-standing tensions between merchants and noblemen and a consequent failure to recruit new leadership for the colony during the summer and fall of 1645. The dissertation proposes close examination of negotiation and compromise as a new method for studying political history.

      • Essays in corporate finance

Bick, Patty The Pennsylvania State University 2012 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

This dissertation contains two essays. In the first essay, I study the effects of voting by mutual funds on CEO compensation after a merger or acquisition (M&A). Prior literature shows that CEOs benefit from engaging in M&As even when the M&As do not benefit the shareholders. Poor governance appears to be a contributing factor in a CEO’s ability to extract rent through the M&A process. Shareholders have an interest in combating this agency issue. I study the influence of mutual funds, the largest shareholders. Mutual funds can influence the compensation of the acquiring firms’ CEO through two actions: voting against management and voting with their feet. Results show that mutual funds do successfully mitigate CEOs’ ability to extract rents during the M&A process by voting against management. This effect is strongest among firms owned by higher numbers of monitoring funds. In the second essay, I examine the information embedded in the three day volatility around an M&A announcement. Volatility can reflect the probability of deal completion, the time to deal resolution, and the CEO tenure subsequent to deal completion. For bad acquisitions, lower volatility indicates investors’ agreement that the acquisition lowers the value of the firm; therefore, these acquisitions should have lower probability of completion. Complexity of a deal can lead to longer time to deal resolution as well as higher volatility. Disagreements regarding synergies the CEO can create through the merger signify the potential private information the CEO has regarding the merger. Therefore, the firm should allow the CEO more time to divulge his capabilities. The results show that volatility is positively related to probability of completion among bad deals. Volatility also correlates positively to the time to resolution and CEOs’ tenure subsequent to deal completion. Additionally, I find that the relationships between volatility and both deal completion and CEO tenure are prominent for firms with good governance. These findings show that three-day volatility contains information regarding firm decisions after the deal announcement.

      • Plant-insect Interactions to Promote Pest Management in Strawberry and Water Hyacinth Ecosystems

Bick, Emily Nicole University of California, Davis ProQuest Dissertat 2019 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

This dissertation includes work pertaining to plant-insect interactions to promote pest management in the strawberry and water hyacinth ecosystems. Specifically, the first chapter examines the relationship between the bottom-up effects of salinity and nutrients on water hyacinth and its biological control agent Neochetina bruchi. The second chapter describes the development of a novel insect sampling device. The third chapter gathered data that allowed the testing of two competing but not mutually exclusive explanations for how alfalfa might enhance control of Lygus spp. on strawberries, one based on alfalfa acting as a trap crop and one based on alfalfa enhancing the densities of natural enemies. The results support the natural enemy hypothesis but not the trap crop hypothesis.
