      • Stance and Grammatical Complexity in Conversation: An Unlikely Partnership Discovered through Corpus Analysis

Douglas Biber 한국코퍼스언어학회 2015 Corpus Linguistics Research Vol.1 No.-

The present paper attempts to synthesize results from two independent lines of corpus-based research: One focused on grammatical complexity, and the second focused on the expression of stance. The paper begins by describing an unexpected pattern of use in conversational discourse: Despite the fact that conversation is co-constructed by multiple participants, producing language in real-time and discussing personal topics, it is characterized by an extremely dense use of dependent clauses. Corpus-based findings regarding the use of stance expressions are less surprising, showing how stance devices are more commonly used in conversation than in academic writing. The main focus of the present paper is to explore the intersection between these two lines of research, showing how many grammatically complex structures in conversation are used to support the functional prominence given to the expression of stance in that register. That is, utterances in conversation often involve two grammatical components, with an idea or a report of an action occurring as the dependent clause, and an expression of stance occurring as the main clause that provides the interpretive frame for the information in the dependent clause. As a result, it is not a coincidence that personal expressions of stance as well as complex grammatical structures are both so prevalent in conversational discourse.

      • Using Multi-Dimensional Analysis to Study Register Variation on the Searchable Web

Douglas Biber,Jesse Egbert 한국코퍼스언어학회 2016 Corpus Linguistics Research Vol.2 No.-

Most previous linguistic studies of web language have focused on the ‘new’ internet registers, like blogs, instant messages, and tweets. As a result, we know surprisingly little about the patterns of linguistic variation among the full range of registers found on the searchable web. The present paper provides an overview of a project that begins to fill this gap. Rather than collecting texts from only the ‘new’ web registers, the project is based on a large corpus representing a random sample of the entire searchable web. The first analytical step in the project was to analyze the types of documents found in that corpus, providing an empirical description of the composition of the searchable web. Then, Multi-Dimensional (MD) analysis was applied to describe the patterns of register variation found on the searchable web. The MD analysis first identified the sets of co-occurring linguistic features -- the ‘dimensions’ -- in this discourse domain. Then, those dimensions are used to document the similarities and differences among web registers. In conclusion, we compare our results here to previous MD studies, identifying patterns peculiar to the web versus linguistic patterns found across discourse domains.

The Use of Pistachio Pollen for the Production of Nanostructured Porous Nickel Oxide

        F. E. Atalay,E. Yigit,Z. S. Biber,H. Kaya 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2018 NANO Vol.13 No.12

Natural biotemplates — such as bacteria, fungi and viruses — are used in nanostructured metal oxide production. The pollen can be found abundantly in nature, and their microcapsules can be easily isolated from the pollen by chemical treatments. To date, pollen microcapsules are mostly used as drug carriers and catalytic agent templates. In the present study, nanoporous-structured nickel oxide is produced using Pistachio pollen microcapsules. The raw pollen, chemically treated pollen and metal-coated pollen were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The natural Pistachio pollen which were procured from Gaziantep, Turkey, are spherical, with a diameter of approximately 23 μm. The maximum surface area obtained for nickel oxide-coated microcapsules is 228.82m2/g. This result shows that Pistachio pollen are an excellent candidate for the production of porous nanostructured materials for supercapacitor electrodes.

Effects of PEDOT:PSS and crystal violet interface layers on current-voltage performance of Schottky barrier diodes as a function of temperature and variation of diode capacitance with frequency

        Deniz A.R.,Taş A.İ.,Çaldıran Z.,İncekara Ü.,Biber M.,Aydoğan Ş.,Türüt A. 한국물리학회 2022 Current Applied Physics Vol.39 No.-

In this study, diode applications of Crystal Violet (CV) and PEDOT materials were studied. The Ni/p-Si/Al, Ni/CV/p-Si/Al and Ni/PEDOT:PSS/CV/p-Si/Al diodes were fabricated. The I–V (current-voltage) characteristics of all diodes were analyzed at room temperature, it was determined that the PEDOT:PSS and CV materials improved the basic diode parameters. Also, I–V characteristics of Ni/PEDOT:PSS/CV/p-Si/Al of diode were investigated for different temperature values. It has been determined that the basic diode parameters are strongly dependent on temperature. It was determined that while the barrier height (Φb) increased with increasing temperature, the ideality factor (n) and the series resistance (Rs) values decreased. Using temperature-dependent measurements, it was determined that the potential barrier and ideality factor values at the contact interface has a double Gaussian distribution. In addition, C–V (capacitance-voltage) measurements of these diodes were analyzed depending on the frequency. It was found that the diode capacitance decreased with increasing frequency.
