Background: Polymorphisms in the MDM2 309 (T>G) and TP53 72 (G>C) genes are reported to increase the susceptibility to head and neck cancer (HNC) in various populations. The risk for HNC is also strongly associated with etiologic habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption and/or chewing of betel quid (BQ). In a case-control study, we investigated the significance of the above polymorphisms alone, and upon interaction with one another as well as with various etiologic habits in determining HNC risk in a Northeast Indian population. Materials and Methods: Genotyping at 309 MDM2 and 72 TP53 in 122 HNC patients and 86 cancer free healthy controls was performed by PCR using allele specific primers, and the results were confirmed by DNA sequencing. Results: Individuals with the GG mutant allele of MDM2 showed a higher risk for HNC in comparison to those with the TT wild type allele (OR=1.9, 95%CI: 1.1-3.3) (p=0.022). The risk was further increased in females by ~4-fold (OR=4.6, 95% CI: 1.1-19.4) (P=0.04). TP53 polymorphism did not contribute to HNC risk alone; however, interaction between the TP53 GC and MDM2 GG genotypes resulted in significant risk (OR=4.9, 95% CI: 0.2-105.1) (p=0.04). Smokers, BQ- chewers and alcohol consumers showed statistically significant and dose-dependent increase in HNC risk, irrespective of the MDM2 genotype. Conclusions: MDM2 genotype could serve as an important predictive biomarker for HNC risk in the population of Northeast India.
Multiculturalism and the cultural politics of racism in Hong Kong
Bhowmik Miron Kumar,Chan Aaron Hin-Tat,Halse Christine Margaret 한국다문화교육학회 2022 Multicultural Education Review Vol.14 No.1
This article examines a new element in the cultural politics of multicultural Hong Kong, namely the emergence of racism towards ethnic and other minorities in on-line discussion forums. To gauge the extent of this problem, we examined 2,918 on-line reader commentaries about the 249 news articles on ethnic minorities published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) between 2012–2018. A discourse analysis found that racist and racialized discourses pervade these commentaries. While our data are from Hong Kong, our study has international implications. The publication of racist commentaries on news articles legitimizes and institutionalizes a culture of racism that, we propose, acts as a potent form of racist public pedagogy. Nevertheless, shedding light on this problem opens up new possibilities for multicultural interventions in policy and education in Hong Kong and beyond.
Embedded 3D-Sensing Devices with Real-Time Depth-Imaging Technologies
Bhowmik, Achintya K. The Korean Infomation Display Society 2017 인포메이션 디스플레이 Vol.18 No.3
In the recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of small form-factor, low power, and low cost 3D-sensing devices based on depth-imaging technologies with real-time performance. This has led to the advent of devices and machines that are able to sense and understand the world, navigate in the environment, and interact naturally with their human users. Human-computer interactions based on touch sensing and speech recognition have already become mainstream, and the rapid developments in 3D sensing is paving the path towards the next level of machine intelligence and interactions. This paper discusses the recent developments in real-time 3D sensing technologies and their emerging system application.
AREA DISTORTION UNDER MEROMORPHIC MAPPINGS WITH NONZERO POLE HAVING QUASICONFORMAL EXTENSION
Bhowmik, Bappaditya,Satpati, Goutam Korean Mathematical Society 2019 대한수학회지 Vol.56 No.2
Let ${\Sigma}_k(p)$ be the class of univalent meromorphic functions defined on the unit disc ${\mathbb{D}}$ with k-quasiconformal extension to the extended complex plane ${\hat{\mathbb{C}}}$, where $0{\leq}k<1$. Let ${\Sigma}^0_k(p)$ be the class of functions $f{\in}{\Sigma}_k(p)$ having expansion of the form $f(z)=1/(z-p)+{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}}\;b_nz^n$ on ${\mathbb{D}}$. In this article, we obtain sharp area distortion and weighted area distortion inequalities for functions in ${\sum_{k}^{0}}(p)$. As a consequence of the obtained results, we present a sharp upper bound for the Hilbert transform of characteristic function of a Lebesgue measurable subset of ${\mathbb{D}}$.
SUFFICIENT CONDITIONS FOR UNIVALENCE AND STUDY OF A CLASS OF MEROMORPHIC UNIVALENT FUNCTIONS
Bhowmik, Bappaditya,Parveen, Firdoshi Korean Mathematical Society 2018 대한수학회보 Vol.55 No.3
In this article we consider the class ${\mathcal{A}}(p)$ which consists of functions that are meromorphic in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ having a simple pole at $z=p{\in}(0,1)$ with the normalization $f(0)=0=f^{\prime}(0)-1$. First we prove some sufficient conditions for univalence of such functions in $\mathbb{D}$. One of these conditions enable us to consider the class ${\mathcal{A}}_p({\lambda})$ that consists of functions satisfying certain differential inequality which forces univalence of such functions. Next we establish that ${\mathcal{U}}_p({\lambda}){\subsetneq}{\mathcal{A}}_p({\lambda})$, where ${\mathcal{U}}_p({\lambda})$ was introduced and studied in [2]. Finally, we discuss some coefficient problems for ${\mathcal{A}}_p({\lambda})$ and end the article with a coefficient conjecture.
Reconceptualizing inclusive leadership to address diversity in schools
Bhowmik Miron Kumar,Walker Allan,Bryant Darren 한국다문화교육학회 2023 Multicultural Education Review Vol.15 No.2
Through combining a diversity perspective and intersectionality approach, this paper contributes to the conceptualization of inclusive leadership for addressing diversity in schools. Drawing on literature from business and management studies as well as that of educational management and leadership, the paper first theorizes inclusive school leadership and outlines the tenets of inclusive school leaders. It then highlights some of the challenges facing school leaders as they strive to build inclusive schools and practices. The paper then identifies and illustrates the traits, profiles and competencies of inclusive school leaders and explicates a number of promising approaches to leading inclusive schools. It also outlines an agenda to underpin the development of inclusive leadership capabilities and how leaders might nurture positive school cultures which not only respect but celebrate diversity and inclusion. The paper concludes by discussing strategies inclusive school leaders can use to meet the challenges accompanying disruptive times and beyond.

This paper presents a systematic design and training procedure for the feed-forward back-propagation neural network (NN) modeling of both forward and inverse behavior of a rotary magnetorheological (MR) damper based on experimental data. For the forward damper model, with damper force as output, an optimization procedure demonstrates accurate training of the NN architecture with only current and velocity as input states. For the inverse damper model, with current as output, the absolute value of velocity and force are used as input states to avoid negative current spikes when tracking a desired damper force. The forward and inverse damper models are trained and validated experimentally, combining a limited number of harmonic displacement records, and constant and half-sinusoidal current records. In general the validation shows accurate results for both forward and inverse damper models, where the observed modeling errors for the inverse model can be related to knocking effects in the measured force due to the bearing plays between hydraulic piston and MR damper rod. Finally, the validated models are used to emulate pure viscous damping. Comparison of numerical and experimental results demonstrates good agreement in the post-yield region of the MR damper, while the main error of the inverse NN occurs in the pre-yield region where the inverse NN overestimates the current to track the desired viscous force.
COEFFICIENT DISCS AND GENERALIZED CENTRAL FUNCTIONS FOR THE CLASS OF CONCAVE SCHLICHT FUNCTIONS
Bhowmik, Bappaditya,Wirths, Karl-Joachim Korean Mathematical Society 2014 대한수학회보 Vol.51 No.5
We consider functions that map the open unit disc conformally onto the complement of an unbounded convex set with opening angle ${\pi}{\alpha}$, ${\alpha}{\in}(1,2]$, at infinity. We derive the exact interval for the variability of the real Taylor coefficients of these functions and we prove that the corresponding complex Taylor coefficients of such functions are contained in certain discs lying in the right half plane. In addition, we also determine generalized central functions for the aforesaid class of functions.
