Cuphea calophylla var. mesostemon (Koehne) S.A. Graham: A Whole-Ethnopharmacological Investigation

Lislaine Maria Klider,Camila Dias Machado,Valter Paes de Almeida,Cleide Adriane Signor Tirloni,Aline Aparecida Macedo Marques,Rhanany Alan Calloi Palozi,Bethânia Rosa Lorençone,Paulo Vitor Moreira Rom 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.4

Several species of Cuphea are used medicinally and are reported to have cardioprotective, diuretic, and antihypertensive properties. In Brazil, Cuphea species are collectively called “sete-sangrias” due to their similar appearances and are also used interchangeably for the same therapeutic purposes. So the aim of the study was to characterize morphoanatomy of leaves and stems, evaluate the safety, and investigate the diuretic, hypotensive, vasodilatory, and antioxidant properties of ethanol-soluble fraction of Cuphea calophylla var. mesostemon (Koehne) S.A. Graham. Initially, the morphoanatomical characterization of the leaves and stems of C. calophylla var. mesostemon was performed. For the pharmacological evaluation, the ethanol-soluble fraction from Cuphea calophylla (ESCC) was obtained and chemically characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector and tandem mass spectrometry techniques. Then, acute toxicity, diuretic, hypotensive, antioxidant, and vasodilatory effects were evaluated in Wistar rats. The main chemical compounds identified from ESCC were gallic acid derivatives, ellagitannins, and flavonoids. ESCC showed no acute toxic effect. ESCC showed no acute toxic effect and the estimated median lethal dose (LD50) was above 2000 mg/kg. ESCC treatment (30, 100, and 300 mg/kg) did not present any significant acute diuretic or hypotensive effects. However, an important reduction in the elimination of electrolytes was observed after the acute administration, and a significant increase in renal sodium elimination was observed after 7 days of treatment. In the cardiac tissue, the groups treated with ESCC presented significant increase in superoxide dismutase activity.

Experimental and SEM Analyses of Ground Fly Ash in Concrete

        Beth Brueggen,Thomas H.-K. Kang,Chris Ramseyer 한국콘크리트학회 2010 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.4 No.1

Fly ash is used in concrete to improve the fresh and hardened properties of concrete, including workability, initial hydration temperature, ultimate strength and durability. A primary limitation on the use of large quantities of fly ash in blended cement concrete is its slow rate of strength gain. Prior studies investigated the effects of grinding fly ash and fly ash fineness on the performance of concrete containing fly ash. This study aims to discover the sources of those effects, to verify the compressive strength behavior of concrete made with raw and processed Class C fly ash, and to investigate the properties of fly ash particles at the microscopic level. Concrete cylinder test results indicate that grinding fly ash can significantly benefit the early age strength as well as the ultimate strength of concrete with ground fly ash. Therefore, it is demonstrated that grinding fly ash increases its reactivity. Scanning Electron Microscopy was then used to investigate the physical effects of the grinding process on the fly ash particles in order to identify the mechanism by which grinding leads to improved concrete properties.

Current status of global dairy goat production: an overview

        Beth A. Miller,Christopher D. Lu 아세아·태평양축산학회 2019 Animal Bioscience Vol.32 No.8

The global goat population continues to grow and is now over one billion. The number of goats raised primarily for milk production is also growing, due to expanding demand. Most of the world dairy goat production and consumption is in Asia, but a global view of the dairy goat sector reveals important lessons about building successful modern dairy goat industries. The most organized market for goat milk is found in Europe, especially in France. The European goat sector is specialized for milk production, mostly for industrial cheesemaking, while also supporting traditional on-farm manufacturing. Government involvement is significant in sanitary regulation, research, extension, support for local producer organizations, and markets, and ensures safety and quality. Nonetheless, producers are still vulnerable to market fluctuations. New dairy goat industries are developing in countries without a long goat milk tradition, such as China, the United States, and New Zealand, due to rising consumer demand, strong prices, and climate change. The mix of policies, management and markets varies widely, but regardless of the country, the dairy goat sector thrives when producers have access to markets, and the tools and skills to sustainably manage their livestock and natural resources. These are most readily achieved through strong and inclusive producer organizations, access to technical services, and policies that enable the poor and marginalized groups to benefit from increasing demand.

      • Country and Eastern : Music, the Internet, and the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association

Beth Szczepanski 아시아음악학회 2017 Asian Musicology Vol.27 No.-

The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas (万佛城) in Ukiah, California is one of the best-known institutions of orthodox Chinese Buddhism in the US. Founded in 1974 by the venerable Chan master Hsuan Hua, CTTB is famous for the study of and strict adherence to Vinaya precepts, as well as for its programs for spreading Buddhist teachings to non-Chinese audiences. In some cases, these two goals appear at odds with each other. For example, most monks and nuns at CTTB adhere to the precept requiring that they refrain from performing or listening to music, but senior monk Reverend Heng Sure has found that music is a very appealing and valuable way to help Americans connect with Buddhist teachings. Reverend Heng Sure, who was a folk singer prior to his ordination, plays guitar and banjo and sings what he calls “Country and Eastern Music.” His flexible use of music allows him to spread Buddhist teachings among people accustomed to engaging with religion through participatory singing. This familiar medium facilitates the teaching of unfamiliar or difficult Buddhist concepts, such as leaving home life and the transfer of merit. American Chinese Buddhist songs also resonate well with the progressive liberal Americans most likely to be drawn to Buddhism. In many cases, these individuals are accustomed to using music as a vehicle for political activism, and Reverend Heng Sure's musical style and lyrical content tend to resemble that of folk protest songs of the 1960s. It remains to be seen, however, if new generations of American Chinese Buddhists will carry on Reverend Heng Sure's work and continue to update the style of American Chinese Buddhist songs to appeal more to younger listeners.

Articles : Economic Integration and Governance: The Role of Preferential Trade Agreements

        ( Beth V. Yarbrough ),( Robert M. Yarbrough ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 1990 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.5 No.2

Traditional economic analyses implicitly assume that costs are technologically determined and thus the same regardless of the form of economic organization. In such a world, preferential trade agreements (PTAs) are a second-best policy. The theory presented here suggests that PTAs arise when international trade involves large and recurrent transaction-specific or non-salvageable investments that are subject to opportunism, particularly in the form of government policies. Organizational form then becomes a major determinant of costs; and a preferential trade agreement, by providing an organizational structure that can reduce opportunistic behavior, may produce benefits beyond those typically recognized.

      • A ROYAL MANUSCRIPT OF 1809 IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY

( Beth Mckillop ) 국립중앙박물관 2010 Journal of Korean Art and Archaeology (JKAA) Vol.4 No.0

The Korean royal manuscript Gisa jinpyori jinchan uigwe (Record of the Presentation Ceremony and Banquet in the Gisa year), a single volume of 94 folios of illustrations and text, was acquired by the British Museum from a vendor in Paris in 1891, having apparently become separated from a group of manuscripts brought to France in 1866-7. It is now in the collection of the British Library. The manuscript was intended to record and illustrate in detail the ceremonies and edicts conducted in 1809 to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the consummation of the marriage of Prince Sado with Lady Hyegyeong (1735-1815). As such, it also is an important testimony to the reinstatement of Prince Sado (1735-1762) in the royal genealogy.

      • A Multi-cultural Application of the Consensual Assessment Technique

        Beth A. Hennessey,Gia Kim,Zheng Guomin,Sun Weiwei 대한사고개발학회 2008 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.18 No.2

The Consensual Assessment Technique for Product Creativity (CAT) (Amabile, 1982, 1983a; Hennessey & Amabile, 1999) is based on the assumption that a panel of independent judges, persons with expertise in a particular field who have not had the opportunity to confer with one another or the researcher and who have never been trained as to how to make their ratings, are best able to make judgments of product creativity and related dimensions. Over 25 years of research carried out in the West have clearly established that the creativity of products can, in fact, be reliably and validly assessed based upon the consensus of experts. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the applicability of the CAT in investigations involving products and raters in non-Western societies. Elementary school teacher-judges were recruited in the US, Saudi Arabia, China and South Korea and were asked to make assessments of collages and stories created by children living in their local area. Across all four cultural contexts, judges’ ratings of product creativity were found to be highly reliable. The argument is made that because investigative paradigms employing the CAT focus on the production of real-world, tangible products that are rated by persons who share the cultural background of the individuals doing the creating, a multiplicity of practical and theoretical problems and biases typically associated with cross-national investigations are avoided. Researchers are encouraged to explore the utility of the CAT for multi-cultural investigations.
