A critical review of slag and fly-ash based geopolymer concrete

Tülin Akçaoğlu,Beste Çubukçuoğlu,Ashraf Awad 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2019 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.24 No.5

Today, concrete remains the most important, durable, and reliable material that has been used in the construction sector, making it the most commonly used material after water. However, cement continues to exert many negative effects on the environment, including the production of carbon dioxide (CO2), which pollutes the atmosphere. Cement production is costly, and it also consumes energy and natural non- renewable resources, which are critical for sustainability. These factors represent the motivation for researchers to examine the various alternatives that can reduce the effects on the environment, natural resources, and energy consumption and enhance the mechanical properties of concrete. Geopolymer is one alternative that has been investigated; this can be produced using aluminosilicate materials such as low calcium (class F) FA, Ultra-Fine GGBS, and high calcium FA (class C, which are available worldwide as industrial, agricultural byproducts.). It has a high percentage of silica and alumina, which react with alkaline solution (activators). Aluminosilicate gel, which forms as a result of this reaction, is an effective binding material for the concrete. This paper presents an up-to-date review regarding the important engineering properties of geopolymer formed by FA and slag binders; the findings demonstrate that this type of geopolymer could be an adequate alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Due to the significant positive mechanical properties of slag-FA geopolymer cements and their positive effects on the environment, it represents a material that could potentially be used in the construction industry.

The Impact of Insulin Resistance on Hepatic Fibrosis among United States Adults with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: NHANES 2017 to 2018

        배지철,Lauren A. Beste,Kristina M. Utzschneider 대한내분비학회 2022 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.37 No.3

Background: We aimed to investigate the association of hepatic steatosis with liver fibrosis and to assess the interactive effects ofhepatic steatosis and insulin resistance on liver fibrosis in a nationally representative sample of United States adults. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017 to2018, which for the first time included transient elastography to assess liver stiffness and hepatic steatosis. We evaluated the association between hepatic steatosis (using controlled attenuation parameter [CAP]) and clinically significant liver fibrosis (defined as liverstiffness ≥7.5 kPa) using logistic regression with an interaction term for hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance (defined as homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance ≥3.0). Results: Among adults undergoing transient elastography (n=2,023), 45.9% had moderate or greater hepatic steatosis and 11.3%had clinically significant liver fibrosis. After adjustment for demographic and metabolic factors, the odds of significant liver fibrosisincreased as CAP score rose (odds ratio, 1.35 per standard deviation increment; 95% confidence interval, 1.11 to 1.64). We detecteda significant interaction effect between CAP score and insulin resistance on the probability of significant liver fibrosis (P=0.016 forinteraction). The probability of significant liver fibrosis increased in the presence of insulin resistance with increasing CAP score, while those without insulin resistance had low probability of significant liver fibrosis, even with high CAP scores. Conclusion: Individuals with hepatic steatosis had higher odds of fibrosis when insulin resistance was present. Our findings emphasize the importance of the metabolic aspects of the disease on fibrosis risk and suggest a need to better identify patients with metabolic associated fatty liver disease.

      • Impact of Adjuvant Chemoradiotherapy for Rectal Cancer on the Long-Term Quality of Life and Late Side Effects: A Multicentric Clinical Evaluation by the Turkish Oncology Group

Kilic, Diclehan,Yalman, Deniz,Aksu, Gorkem,Atasoy, Beste M.,Igdem, Sefik,Dincbas, Fazilet O.,Yalcin, Suayib Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.11

Aim: Although preoperative chemoradiatherapy (CRT) has proven its benefits in terms of decreased toxicity, there is still a considerable amount of cases that do not receive postoperative CRT. Oncologists at different geographic locations still need to know the long-term effects of this treatment in order to manage patients successfully. The current paper reports on long-term quality of life (QOL) and late side effects after adjuvant CRT in rectal cancer patients from 5 centers in Anatolia. Methods: Rectal cancer patients treated with postoperative CRT with minimum 1-year follow-up and were in complete remission, were evaluated according to RTOG and LENT-SOMA scales. They were also asked to complete Turkish version of EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire and the CR-38 module. Each center participated with the required clinical data. Results: Two hundred and thirty patients with median age of 55 years participated and completed the study. Median follow-up time was 5 years. All patients received RT concomitant with chemotherapy. Common parameters that both increased functional health scales and yielded better symptom scores were long term interval after treatment and sphincter-saving surgery. In addition, surgery type and follow-up time were determined to be predictors of QOL scores and late toxicity grade. Conclusion: Postoperative CRT was found to have a great impact on the long term QOL and side effects in rectal cancer survivors. The factors that adversely affect these are abdominoperineal resection and shorter interval. The findings may encourage life-long follow-up and cooperation with patients, which should be mentioned during the initial counseling.

The use of infrared thermography to detect the stages of estrus cycle and ovulation time in anatolian shepherd dogs

        ( Kemal Tuna Olgac ),( Ergun Akcay ),( Beste Cil ),( Burak Mehmet Ucar ),( Ali Daskın ) 한국축산학회(구 한국동물자원과학회) 2017 한국축산학회지 Vol.59 No.10

Background: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of thermographic monitoring, using the temperature changes of perianal and perivulvar areas for the determination of estrus in Anatolian Shepherd bitches. Fifteen bitches were used in the study. Blood and vaginal smear samples were collected and thermographic monitoring of perianal and perivulvar areas were carried out starting from proestrus to early diestrus. Also, external signs of estrus were investigated. Smear samples were evaluated by light microscopy after Diff-Quik staining method and superficial and keratinized superficial cells were determined as percentage (S + KS%). Progesterone and luteinizing hormone measurements were done by radioimmunoassay. The difference in temperature between perianal and perivulvar areas was evaluated through thermographic images by FLIR ResearchIR Software. Results: According to the results obtained from the study, differences between progesterone and S + KS% were statistically significant (P < 0,05). Although temperature showed increase and decrease with progesterone and S + KS%, the differences were not important statistically (P > 0,05). Serum luteinizing hormone levels did not sign any difference (P > 0,05). Conclusions: As a result, thermographic monitoring alone is not enough for estrus detection in Anatolian Shepherd bitches. However, it can be used to assist the actual estrus detection technique in terms of providing some foreknowledge by evaluating the differences in temperature

THE MIRU˘K-SA OF PAEKCHE and Some Contextual Implications of Its Architectural Iconography

Best, Jonathan W 원광대학교 마한백제문화연구소 1990 馬韓, 百濟文化 Vol.12 No.-

The cult of Maitreya maintained a prominent place in Korean Buddhism long after its importance had waned in China. One telling piece of evidence supportive of this view is the comparatively large number of late Three Kingdoms' sculptural representations of the bodhisattva Maitreya seated in the wellknown, cross-legged pensive pose (pan' gasayu-sang). This iconographic type was prevalent in Korea during the last years of the sixth and the first half of the seventh century, and includes some of the most widely admired surviving examples of Three Kingdoms period sculpture. Moreover, as indicated by a stele adorned with a relief dedication of a contemplative bodhisattva in this pose that was excavated in the Paekche region but that dates a decade or two after the kingdom's destruction, the cult of Maitreya evidently continued to be patronized in southwestern Korea well into the second half of the seventh century. In contrast, this type of image reached the apogee of its popularity in China during the middle years of the sixth century, but with surprising abruptness became exceedingly rare following the rise of the Sui dynasty in 581. Similarly, I know of no Chinese commentaries treating the major Maitreya su ̄tras that date later than the sixth century, whereas all four extant Korean commentaries to these su ̄tras-one by the Unified Silla monk Wo˘nhyo(617-686) and three by his contemporary, Kyo˘nghu˘ng (f1. ca. 680-690), who hailed from Ungch'o˘n, the heartland of the former domain of Peakch-date to the seventh century. One factor in the Maitreya cult's prolonged success in early Korea is that it appears to have never been implicated in popular rebellions; in China, on the other hand, the messianic promise of the future Buddha's earthly descent resulted in the cult's repeated association with millenarian uprisings. As will be discussed today, the conjoined today, the conjoined evidence of the iconography and history of the Miru˘k-sa indicates that in the kingdom of Paeckche such socially disruptive entanglements of the Maitreya cult's messianic teaching were avoided, in part, through the appropriation of those by King Mu in the early seventh century as a revelation that legitimized his dynasty's then ascendant political position on the peninsula.

      • Why Healthy Workplaces Matter

Best, Robert S. Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat Korea 2017 International journal of high-rise buildings Vol.6 No.4

Employers are realizing that workplaces have an immense impact on productivity. And, because people typically represent about 90% of a company's costs, even a slight improvement in productivity hits the bottom-line in a very big way. The focus is shifting away from saving money by reducing space needs or cutting energy requirements, and moving toward making the workplace friendlier and healthier. What is a healthy workplace, exactly? The answer should be clear by now. Mountains of research have expounded on this very topic, and then news outlets cover the latest discoveres ad infinitum. The problem is, research is rather dense, while the news isn't comprehensive. Office managers trying to improve workplace wellness want neither a 55-page report nor a half dozen articles to convince their landlord that their space can do better. Recognizing this gap, Harvard researchers have released a concise-yet-complete list of healthy building features. Here, we're sharing these nine features with a few insights of our own on the value of being healthy and productive. Find out: ${\bullet}$ What makes a healthy building and why is it so important ${\bullet}$ How to improve the health of your own office ${\bullet}$ What happens for your people and your bottom line when you make health a priority.

Evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 in Human Semen and Effect on Total Sperm Number: A Prospective Observational Study

        Best Jordan C.,Kuchakulla Manish,Khodamoradi Kajal,Lima Thiago Fernandes Negris,Frech Fabio Stefano,Achua Justin K.,Rosete Omar,Mora Belén,Arora Himanshu,Ibrahim Emad,Ramasamy Ranjith 대한남성과학회 2021 The World Journal of Men's Health Vol.39 No.3

Purpose: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has created a surge of research to help better understand the breadth of possible sequelae. However, little is known regarding the impact on semen parameters and fertility potential. We sought to investigate for presence of viral RNA in semen of men with SARS-CoV-2 infection and to evaluate its effect on semen parameters in ejaculate. Materials and Methods: We prospectively recruited thirty men diagnosed with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection using real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of pharyngeal swab specimens. Semen samples were collected from each individual using mailed kits. Follow-up semen samples were done with mailed kits or in-person in office setting. Semen analysis and PCR was performed after samples were received. Results: Thirty semen samples from recovered men were obtained 11–64 days after testing positive for SAR-CoV-2 infection. The median duration between positive SAR-CoV-2 test and semen collection was 37 days (interquartile range [IQR]=23). The median total sperm number (TSN) in ejaculate was 12.5 million (IQR=52.1). When compared with age-matched SARSCoV- 2(-) men, TSN was lower among SARS-CoV-2(+) men (p=0.0024). Five men completed a follow-up sperm analysis (median 3 months) and had a median TSN of 18 million (IQR=21.6). No RNA was detected by means of RT-PCR in the semen in 16 samples tested. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 infection, though not detected in semen of recovered men, can affect TSN in ejaculate in the acute setting. Whether SARS-CoV-2 can affect spermatogenic function long-term remains to be evaluated.
