        Eco-Citizenship, Technology and Aesth/Ehics

Sigurd Bergmann 한국민중신학회 2007 Madang: Journal of Contextual Theology Vol.8 No.-

The essay approaches Life as a process in the natural space. Space is not a life-less container but a life embracing existential. Financial capital and the global market appear in such a perspective as disembedded and despatialized artefacts, which are totally dependent of living environments as well as of humans who believe in the power of money. The de-spatialization assisted by monetary and technology systems provokes the emergence of a countervailing power, where re-localisation stands at the core and where citizens all over the planet develop a new multiple longing for belonging. After an introductory discussion of the history and potentials of a common European foreign politics in alliance with Asian social movements, three themes are investigated. a) Departing from a theory of transculturation, ecocitizenship is analysed as a continuation of the development from civil through political to social citizenship. How could earth cosmopolitanism in Asia imply an important strengthening of global environmentalism? How are the spiritual traditions of religion offering a significant deepening for global and local environmentalism? b) The dominant ideology for technology today is simply reductionist and poor. Artefacts are seen as tools for humans who would like to realise purposes. Technology, although, is more than that. Artefacts are part of a complex and dynamic interaction of humans and their surroundings. How can life-threatening technologies be separated from those which enhance life? c) A central suggestion for the ideological and theological support of such an approach is elaborated in the programmatic concept of 'aesth/ethics.' Aesthetics is here understood not as a theory of beauty but as a discursive and artistic reflection and production of practices and discourses on synaesthetic perception, creation and reception. Aesthetical justice is about the need of ethics to integrate the strange and the stranger, and to include heterogeneity into the concept of justice. The potential for a deep critique of globalisation, which departs not only in economic of ideological arguments, is found in a metanoia of our minds and sensitive bodies. How could you develop your aesthetical skills of perception so that you really can see, hear, smell, touch, feel and understand the sufferings of your sister and brother? What would it mean to develop a spiritual aesthetical education programme for the love of the strange in society and nature? The article offers a revised version of a contribution to the "International Conference on Peace for Life in North East Asia," arranges by the Korean Christian Faculty Fellowship in Uiwang, Kyunggido, 16-20 May 2005.

Chip formation of rounded cutting edges

        B. Bergmann,B. Denkena,T. Grove,T. Picker 한국정밀공학회 2019 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.20 No.1

In cutting processes, the performance and tool life of cutting tools are important evaluation criterions. The cutting edge microgeometry of the tools is in direct contact with the workpiece and thus influences the material flow and the loads on the cutting wedge. Research to date has demonstrated the potential of rounded cutting edges and their improved wear behavior. However, the investigations were always limited to a certain number of materials or processes. For a process-specific design of the cutting edge microgeometry, it must be possible to explicitly describe the material- and process-related contact conditions during machining with rounded cutting edges. Hence, the following article analyzes the chip formation of different cutting edge microgeometries during machining in continuous and interrupted cutting. For this purpose, planing tests on non-ferrous and ferrous materials as well as milling tests on steel alloys with differently rounded cutting tools are carried out and the effects on the chip formation process are analyzed. The results show that the minimum uncut chip thickness hmin correlates linearly to the cutting edge rounding. In addition, the correlation obtained is independent of the cutting process and the workpiece material.

      • The Rationalization of Port Logistics Activities: A Study at Port of Santos (Brazil)

Guilherme Bergmann Borges VIEIRA,Francisco José KLIEMANN NETO,Jose Luis Duarte RIBEIRO 국제이네비해양경제학회 2015 International Journal of e-Navigation and Maritime Vol.2 No.1

This paper presents a study of the port logistics activities at the port of Santos (Brazil). The study follows a qualitative approach and it is based on in-depth interviews with some key actors from Santos port logistics chain. Based on these interviews, the main dysfunctions and improvement opportunities associated to the container port logistics processes at Santos were identified. The results show that the main dysfunctions are related to the existing information flows. Due to this, a new information flow related to the studied port is proposed and some probable results of the implementation are identified. The findings contribute both to the studied port and to the academic community, as the number of studies addressing port logistics activities is still limited.

        Yeats’s Poems on Pictures

Elizabeth Bergmann Loizeaux 한국예이츠학회 2012 한국예이츠 저널 Vol.38 No.-

Yeats, using the resources of ekphrasis, wrote some of the most important poems of the twentieth century. Sometimes set in the liminal space of the museum, Yeats’s poetry provides a sense of presence and concreteness, lyric subjectivity into the polyvocal realm of a work of art, immediate engagement with another mind, time, and place, prompting narrative, often of creativity itself. Ekphrasis expands Yeats’s, as well as other twentieth-century poets’s, range of lyric expression.

      • Alcohol Consumption and Risk of Cancer: a Systematic Literature Review

de Menezes, Raquel Ferreira,Bergmann, Anke,Thuler, Luiz Claudio Santos Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.9

This study aimed to discuss the consumption of alcohol as a risk factor for major cancers. We performed a search in the PubMed database, using the following inclusion criteria: meta-analysis published in English in the last 10 years that addressed the relationship between alcohol and the risk of developing cancer. The results indicate that moderate to heavy consumption of alcohol increases the risk of developing cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx, esophagus, stomach, larynx, colorectum, central nervous system, pancreas, breast and prostate. This review did not find any association between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of cancers of the lung, bladder, endometrium and ovary. It was also observed that alcohol consumption may be inversely related to thyroid cancer. Our systematic review has confirmed consumption of alcohol as a risk factor for the development of several types of cancer.

Environmental Damages in the Atlantic Forest Biome

Brodt, Michele Santa Catarina,Bergmann, Melissa,Broman, Eli Natali,Sanfelice, Gabriela,Ferreira, Juliana Duarte,Lunardi, Larissa,Huller, Alexandre,Carli, Lenice De Institute of Forest Science 2018 Journal of Forest Science Vol.34 No.2

We identified the main impacts, drivers, and restoration projects for Atlantic Forest in Northwest of the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The objective was to analyze the quantity, distribution, and causes of the environmental crimes in 2000-2014. To verify differences between degraded and restored areas, we performed a t-test; ANOVA for the municipalities with more quantity of crimes, simple linear regression analysis for the relationship between sizes of degraded areas and quantity of seedlings planted, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for environmental damages categories and population of the municipalities. The main environmental damages found were deforestation outside permanent preservation area (20%) and those related to Permanent Preservation Area (37%). Environmental crimes in these areas fall into two categories: native and exotic vegetation removal (17%), and impediment to natural regeneration (20%). The average size of the degraded areas was $5,359{\pm}526m^2$, while for restored areas was $3,337{\pm}255m^2$. The sizes of the degraded fragments were similar among the five municipalities with the higher number of environmental crimes (ANOVA: p>0.05, F=1.24; df=241). The number of seedlings planted was positively related to the sizes of the degraded fragments (p<0.001, $R^2=0.53$). Segregation between the less and the most populous municipalities was found with the PCA analysis along PC1 (51.7%), while PC2 represented 19.2% of the total variation. The most populous municipalities showed the highest number of environmental crimes, and the majority of degraded areas were recovered by planting native seedlings. Atlantic Forest fragments need to be recognized and preserved as an ecosystem with a unique ecological function by the population and public administration.
