      • Locating and Utilising Inherent Qualities in an Expanded Sound Palette for Solo Flute

        플루트 독주 특유의 즉흥적 음악언어를 추구하면서, 전통적이고 현대적인 연주기법의 범위를 넘어 컴퓨터를 이용한 악기의 확장이라는 영역으로 넘어가야 할 필요성을 종종 느낄 때가 있다. 이러한 이유로 알리스 베넷Alice Bennett의 창작 작품은 실용적인 사운드 팔레트를 확장시키는 새로운 전자음향적 기술을 탐색케 한다. 이 글은 빈센트 길레스Vincent Giles가 실시간으로 분광 영역 마이크로사운드 증폭 소프트웨어SDMAS(Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software)를 사용한 플루트 연주에 관하여 기술한다. 분광 영역 마이크로사운드 증폭 소프트웨어SDMAS는 실시간으로 입력된 소리가 특정 음량 기준점 주변 배음들의 음량을 변화시켜, 작은 소리를 상대적으로 큰 음량으로 증폭시킨다. 그 결과 들을 수 없었을 [작은] 배음들이 큰 음량의 배음들과 같이 커져, 기존의 악기 혹은 변형된 악기 음색과도 확연히 다른 음색을 얻게 된다. 이는 연주자/작곡가가 순전히 어쿠스틱 악기에서 얻을 수 있는 것과 다른 음색을 보여줄 뿐 아니라 보다 넓은 영역의 음색을 활용할 수 있게 해준다. 이는 초월적 악기의 확장형태instrument configuration에 기반한, 음향적으로 풍부하고 독특한 즉흥적 음악언어를 이끌어 낼 것이다. In the search for an idiosyncratic improvisatory language of solo flute performance, it is sometimes necessary to move beyond the scope of traditional and extended techniques into the world of instrument-extension through computers. To this end, Alice Bennett’s creative work leads to the exploration of new electroacoustic techniques, searching for ways to expand the available sonic palette. This paper documents an electronically-extended flute performance utilising Vincent Giles’ Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software (SDMAS) in real-time. The SDMAS amplifies soft sounds relative to loud, by real-time input, shifting the partials by amplitude around an amplitude-based pivot point. The result is that these otherwise-inaudible partials increased to audibility alongside the higher amplitude partials, drastically altering the perceived timbre of the instrument or instruments being treated. This allows the performer/composer to not only discover, but to exploit a greater range of timbres than are available to a purely acoustic instrument. These explorations lead to a sonically enriched and idiosyncratic improvisatory language based on this hyper-instrument configuration.

        “My soul frets in the shadow of his language”: The Poetics of Decolonization in the Works of W. B. Yeats and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o

        Edward Said exemplifies W. B. Yeats as a poet of decolonization in relation to the downfall of imperial domination in Ireland as Yeats revitalizes the Irish heritage with patriotism and nationalism. The similar writing strategy of decolonization is employed by the Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, who writes about the transition from precolonial reality to postcolonial modernity. This essay reads these two national playwrights by examining the poetics of decolonization in theatrical representations. Yeats’s play Cathleen ni Houlihan (1902) depicts the suppressed condition of the Irish peasantry that directly responds to Irish nationalism and decolonization of the Irish mind. In Decolonising the Mind (1986) and other Gikuyu plays, Ngũgĩ examines how cultural imperialism uses the colonialism as a psychological conquest in Africa and beyond. Conceptualizing the African theater as a site for resistance, Ngũgĩ traces the origin of drama in precolonial Kenya and contrasts the Kenyan theater with the British theatrical regime that destroys the indigenous empty space. Both authors stage politics and politicize the stage against British colonialism to bring their own heritage and language to revival. Both highlight the vernacular in theatrical performance while stressing such precious heritage to decolonize the mind of the audience.

Construct a graph, called the distance graph of E, by letting the vertices be the elements of E and connect a pair of vertices corresponding to vectors x, y 2 E by an edge if ${\parallel}x-y{\parallel}:=(x_1-y_1)^2+{\cdots}+(x_d-y_d)^2=1$. We shall prove that the non-overlapping chains of length k, with k in an appropriate range, are uniformly distributed in the sense that the number of these chains equals the statistically correct number, $1{\cdot}{\mid}E{\mid}^{k+1}q^{-k}$ plus a much smaller remainder.

        Long-Term Study of Weather Effects on Soybean Seed Composition

        A long-term study initiated in 1989 at San-born Field, Columbia, Missouri, was designed to evaluate the affect of environmental factors, nitrogen application, and crop rotation on soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) seed composition. Soybeans were grown as part of a four- year rotation which included corn (Zea maize L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.). Results from soil tests made prior to initiation of the study and subsequently every five years, were used to calculate application rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium necessary for target yield of pursuant crops. In the experimental design, nitrogen was applied to one-half of the plot on which the non-leguminous crop, either corn or wheat was grown. Analysis of soybean seed by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy collected over an 11-year period revealed a linear increase in protein and decrease in oil content. Application of nitrogen fertilizer to non-leguminous crops did not have an apparent effect on total protein or oil content of subsequent soybean crop. Analysis of soybean seed proteins by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in conjunction with computer­assisted densitometry revealed subtle changes in the accumulation of seed proteins. Immunoblot analysis using antibodies raised against the $\beta-subunit$ of $\beta-conglycinin$ showed a gradual increase in the accumulation of the 7S components during successive years of the experiment. A linear increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall was observed from the onset of data· collection. Higher temperatures during the growing season have been linked to increased protein and diminished oil content of soybean, thus changes observed in this study are possibly related to climatic conditions. However, crop rotation and subsequent changes in soil ecology may contribute to these observed changes in the seed composition.

      • The Feeling of Going: Judgments of Learning(JOLs) for Maps and Directions

        Spatial metamemory is an unexplored topic, despite our knowledge of spatial me-mory. In the current study, Judgments of learning (JOLs) for maps (Experiment 1) and verbal directions (Experiment 2) were examined. The tasks were chosen to mirror real-world spatial learning situations. In both studies, participants studied for 60 seconds a map or a set of directions from one place to another. Following study, participants assessed JOLs on a 0 to 100 scale immediately after the map (Experiment 1) or the directions (Experiment 2) were removed. Participants then wrote or drew the directions from one place to another. These JOLs are immediate JOLs (Nelson & Dunlosky,1991), which tend to be low in accuracy (.3 to .4). For both maps and directions, the gamma correlations were above .8. Calibration of the magnitude of the judgments also closely matched performance. Various explana-tions for the strong gamma correlations are given.

        인도 뉴 델리에서 개최된 세계 기독교 협의회(W.C.C.) 제4차 대회(1961년 11월)의 중요한 의의는 이 대회의 성격이 어떠하였는가에도 나타나 있지만 또 이 대회가 실제로 결의하여 보여준 행동에서도 잘 발견된다. 이 대회에서는 교회가 당면하고 있는 커다란 종교적이며 윤리적인 사상면과 교회정책상의 제 문제에 대해서 거의 새로운 변동을 가져오지는 않았다. 그러나 이번대회에서 이룩된 결정으로 이 세계 협의회는 앞으로 근본적인 변화를 가져오게 될 것이다.
