Effects of Exogenous Salicylic Acid on Antioxidant Activity and Proline Accumulation in Apple (Malus domestica L.)

Bengu Turkyilmaz Unal,Oguzhan Mentis,Ethem Akyol 한국원예학회 2015 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.56 No.5

This study was conducted to determine the effects of exogenous application of different levels of salicylic acid (SA; 0 mM, 3.62 mM, and 7.24 mM) on antioxidant activity and proline accumulation in apple (Malus domestica Borkh cv. Red Chief Delicious) trees during late spring frost. The study was performed in Ulukısla, Nigde, Turkey from December 2012 to June 2013. We measured the levels of photosynthetic pigments, total proteins and proline in leaves, as well as superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzymatic activities. We also performed morphological observations of the trees. The study was planned according to random experimental design. We determined that SA application increased the fruit number, shoot number, and carotenoid contents in the leaves, but this increase was not statistically significant. However, the fruit weights, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities, as well as chlorophyll, protein, and proline levels increased significantly in response to SA treatment compared to the control. In addition, the treated fruits were darker than the control. These results suggest that treating apple trees with exogenous SA may increase antioxidant enzyme activities as well as protein and proline levels and may alleviate the effects of late spring frost.

ON GENERALIZED SPHERICAL SURFACES IN EUCLIDEAN SPACES

        ( Bengu Bayram ),( Kadri Arslan ),( Betul Bulca ) 호남수학회 2017 호남수학학술지 Vol.39 No.3

In the present study we consider the generalized rotational surfaces in Euclidean spaces. Firstly, we consider generalized spherical curves in Euclidean (n + 1)-space En+1. Further, we introduce some kind of generalized spherical surfaces in Euclidean spaces E3 and E4 respectively. We have shown that the generalized spherical surfaces of first kind in E4 are known as rotational surfaces, and the second kind generalized spherical surfaces are known as meridian surfaces in E4. We have also calculated the Gaussian, normal and mean curvatures of these kind of surfaces. Finally, we give some examples.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Effective in Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity in Rats?

        H. Bengu Cobanoglu,Erkan Vuralkan,Abdullah Arslan,Bengusu Mirasoglu,A. Savas Toklu 대한이비인후과학회 2019 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.12 No.1

Objectives. Cisplatin is an antineoplastic agent, used in the treatment of different types of malignant neoplasms. Side effects such as ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and bone marrow toxicity are the main limitations of its clinical use. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy as a protective agent in cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats. Methods. A total of 30 adult Wistar rats (60 ears) were divided into five equal groups. Group 1 is a control group; group 2 is HBO therapy group; group 3 received 15 mg/kg cisplatin intraperitoneally; group 4 received 15 mg/kg cisplatin intraperitoneally and HBO treatment on the same day; group 5 received 15 mg/kg cisplatin intraperitoneally and HBO treatment 72 hours later. The effect of ototoxicity was measured with distortion product otoacoustic emission testing performed on the days 1, 3, and 7. Results. Groups 4 and 5 that received HBO treatment after cisplatin had better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values compared with group 3 that received only cisplatin (P<0.05). Compared with group 5, group 4 (same day HBO treatment) had better SNR values (P<0.05). Conclusion. HBO was found effective for prevention of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats. Our study differs from other studies regarding using a promising treatment, which does not expose subjects to extra stress.

ON GENERALIZED SPHERICAL SURFACES IN EUCLIDEAN SPACES

        Bayram, Bengu,Arslan, Kadri,Bulca, Betul The Honam Mathematical Society 2017 호남수학학술지 Vol.39 No.3

In the present study we consider the generalized rotational surfaces in Euclidean spaces. Firstly, we consider generalized spherical curves in Euclidean (n + 1)-space ${\mathbb{E}}^{n+1}$. Further, we introduce some kind of generalized spherical surfaces in Euclidean spaces ${\mathbb{E}}^3$ and ${\mathbb{E}}^4$ respectively. We have shown that the generalized spherical surfaces of first kind in ${\mathbb{E}}^4$ are known as rotational surfaces, and the second kind generalized spherical surfaces are known as meridian surfaces in ${\mathbb{E}}^4$. We have also calculated the Gaussian, normal and mean curvatures of these kind of surfaces. Finally, we give some examples.

Personality Beliefs in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: How Are They Related to Symptom Severity?

        Aysegul Kart,Bengu Yucens 대한신경정신의학회 2020 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.17 No.8

Objective The comorbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and personality disorders (PDs) is frequent but there are conflicting findings about which PDs are the most common. This study aimed to investigate the personality beliefs that exist on a more pathological level among OCD patients, to explore the association between personality beliefs and OCD severity, and to clarify the mediator effect of depression in this relationship. Methods 202 OCD patients and 76 healthy controls with similar sociodemographic features were included in the study. The Personality Belief Questionnaire-Short Form was administered to both groups. The Yale-Brown Obsessions and Compulsions Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory were administered only to the clinical sample. Results The dependent, histrionic, paranoid, borderline, and avoidant personality subscale scores were significantly higher in the OCD group than in the control group. There was an association only between OCD severity and narcissistic personality beliefs, also depression mediated the relationship between narcissistic personality and OCD severity. Conclusion Some personality beliefs at a pathological level are more common among OCD patients. Personality beliefs, as well as depression, should be routinely assessed, as they may affect OCD severity, help-seeking behavior, and response to treatment.

Tensor product surfaces with pointwise 1-type Gauss map

        Kadri Arslan,Betul Bulca,Bengu Kilic,Young Ho Kim,Cengizhan Murathan,Gunay Ozturk 대한수학회 2011 대한수학회보 Vol.48 No.3

Tensor product immersions of a given Riemannian manifold was initiated by B.-Y. Chen. In the present article we study the tensor product surfaces of two Euclidean plane curves. We show that a tensor product surface M of a plane circle c_1 centered at origin with an Euclidean planar curve c_2 has harmonic Gauss map if and only if M is a part of a plane. Further, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a tensor product surface M of a plane circle c_1 centered at origin with an Euclidean planar curve c_2 to have pointwise 1-type Gauss map.

Neuroprotective Effects of Lacosamide in Experimental Peripheral Nerve Injury in Rats : A Prospective Randomized and Placebo-Controlled Trial

        Demiroz, Serdar,Ur, Koray,Bengu, Aydin Sukru,Ulucan, Aykut,Atici, Yunus,Erdogan, Sinan,Cirakli, Alper,Erdem, Sevki The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2020 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.63 No.2

Objective : To evaluate the neuroprotective effects of lacosamide after experimental peripheral nerve injury in rats. Methods : A total of 28 male wistar albino rats weighing 300-350 g were divided into four groups. In group I, the sciatic nerve exposed and the surgical wound was closed without injury; in group II, peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) was performed after dissection of the nerve; in group III, PNI was performed after dissection and lacosamide was administered, and in group IV, PNI was performed after dissection and physiological saline solution was administered. At 7 days after the injury all animals were sacrificed after walking track analysis. A 5 mL blood sample was drawn for biochemical analysis, and sciatic nerve tissues were removed for histopathological examination. Results : There is low tissue damage in lacosamide treated group and antioxidant anzymes and malondialdehyde levels were higher than non-treated and placebo treated group. However there was no improvement on clinical assessment. Conclusıon : The biochemical and histological analyses revealed that lacosamide has neuroprotective effect in PNI in rats. This neuroprotective capacity depends on its scavenger role for free oxygen radicals by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity.

Fashion consumption during economic crisis: Emerging practices and feelings of consumers

Zeynep Ozdamar Ertekin,Bengu Sevil Oflac,Cemre Serbetcioglu 한국마케팅과학회 2020 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.11 No.3

Economic crisis has a significant impact on consumption practices and the way consumers justify their consumption patterns. Particularly in the field of fashion, consumers face a conflict between desire to consume due to rapidly changing fashion trends and coping with the decrease in purchasing power due to the economic crisis. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to gain a deeper understanding of how the economic crisis affects consumers’ fashion consumption behavior and the alternative consumption practices that emerge. The research further sheds light on the underlying feelings involved due to changes in consumption patterns. Some of the themes that emerge—reuse, reduce, and reject—are in line with earlier findings on anti-consumption but this time the motives of the consumers are non-voluntary. The findings also contribute to anti-consumption literature by introducing three new themes: refind alternative channels, reconsider, and rely on discounts. The study further shows that there are both positive and negative feelings associated with changes in consumption behavior due to economic crisis. Along with understanding the adaptations in consumption behavior, anticipating these conflicting emotions resulting from crisis related anti-consumption is important for marketers and retailers who are concerned about developing appropriate responsive strategies.
