Exergy-based Energy Efficiency Evaluation Model for Machine Tools Considering Thermal Stability

Machine tools, as the extensively used basic equipment of manufacturing industry, are characterized by intensive and inefficient energy consumption. With the launch and implementation of ISO 14955-1, energy efficiency has become an important criterion for machine tool evaluation. However, most ongoing research on energy efficiency evaluation of machine tools emphasizes on workpiece material removal energy efficiency and rarely considers energy consumption needed to ensure machining accuracy and accuracy consistency, especially energy consumption for thermal stability control of machine tools. In light of this, an exergy analysis based approach is presented to assess the comprehensive energy efficiency of machine tools, including energy consumption for material removal and thermal stability control. The key performance indexes of exergy efficiency, exergy destruction, and specific exergy consumption are analyzed. The feasibility of the proposed approach was demonstrated by a case study, in which the comprehensive energy efficiency of a machine tool was found to be 21.57% instead of 14.38% of material removal energy efficiency. The proposed method is more effective to evaluate the comprehensive energy efficiency, to support designers to design high-efficient machine tool and users to operate machine tool for green and precision machining.
In situ observation of mesophase transformation behaviour and mechanistic analysis in β-resin

β-Resin was extracted by solvent separation of refined coal tar pitch. Several analytical methods revealed that β-resin had a better aromatic plane packing structure and a higher number of carbon residues, making it ideal for mesophase transformation. The mesophase transformation process of β-resin (the formation of liquid-crystalline spheres, the growth of mesophase spheres, and the coalescence and disintegration of mesophase spheres) was observed in situ using a polarizing microscope with a hot stage. Moreover, the mesophase transformation mechanism of β-resin was investigated at each transformation stage. The mesophase content and mesophase transformation kinetics were analyzed based on the area method and quinoline insoluble (QI) substitution method. Both methods revealed changes in the mesophase content of β-resin. However, the test results of the two methods were slightly different at the initial stage of mesophase transformation and tended to be consistent during the later stage.

This study aims to analyze the user behavior of a subway station rest space in an urban space. Taking the fountain plaza near the Seomyeon subway station in Busan as the object of study, user behaviors were classified into three categories: necessary, optional, and social activities through on-site observation and literature review, and the needs of the physical environment for different types of activities were assessed. Improvement measures for public facilities are also proposed. The results of the study found that the current subway station rest spaces lack public facilities that support users’ resting activities and social activities, thus leading to an unbalanced subway environment and low user satisfaction. Therefore, this paper suggests that public facilities in the rest area in subway stations should be suitable for different types of activities and to enhance the connection between subway stations and the surrounding environment.

The mechanical properties and low-cycle fatigue behavior of the hot-rolled AA2195 Al-Li alloy taken along the longitudinaldirection and transverse direction were investigated. The anisotropy ductility of the alloy with the short-term naturalaging (T4-SN), long-term natural aging (T4-LN), and T6 artificial aging alloy is mainly related to the grain structure andgrain boundaries, whereas the weakened anisotropy of ductility is attributed to the appearance of PFZs. The T4-SN andT4-LN specimens present the cyclic hardening phenomenon due to the interaction of dislocations with dislocations or theGuinier–Preston zone. The cyclic softening phenomenon in T6 specimens is attributed to that the dislocations cut throughthe T1precipitates, and some dislocations bypass the non-shearable precipitates, which activates more potential slip systemsto shear the T1precipitates.

Creating a pleasant environment in the subway stations as a symbol of the city is an important issue in improving the residetns’ quality of life. The purpose of this study is to classify graphic images of subway station, an important design factor that determines the environment of subway stations, into various types and to analyze the design characteristics of them. The graphic types of subway stations are largely divided into linear types and pattern types, and they are subdivided into 4 categories. Each design type is evaluated on the six design characteristics of accessibility, differentiation, diversity, aesthetics, playfulness, and symbolism through the survey.

Purpose: To evaluate the prognostic value of serum CYFRA21-1, CEA and hemoglobin levels regarding long-term survival of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Methods: Age, gender, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), tumor location, tumor length, T stage, N stage and serum hemoglobin, and CYFRA21-1 and CEA levels before concurrent CRT were retrospectively investigated and related to outcome in 113 patients receiving 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin combined with radiotherapy for ESCC. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze prognosis, the log-rank to compare groups, the Cox proportional hazards model for multivariate analysis, and ROC curve analysis for assessment of predictive performance of biologic markers. Results: The median survival time was 20.1 months and the 1-, 2-, 3-, 5- year overall survival rates were 66.4%, 43.4%, 31.9% and 15.0%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that factors associated with prognosis were KPS, tumor length, T-stage, N-stage, hemoglobin, CYFRA21-1 and CEA level. Multivariate analysis showed T-stage, N-stage, hemoglobin, CYFRA21-1 and CEA level were independent predictors of prognosis. By ROC curve, CYFRA21-1 and hemoglobin showed better predictive performance for OS than CEA (AUC= 0.791, 0.704, 0.545; P=0.000, 0.000, 0.409). Conclusions: Of all clinicopathological and molecular factors, T stage, N stage, hemoglobin, CYFRA21-1 and CEA level were independent predictors of prognosis for patients with ESCC treated with concurrent CRT. Among biomarkers, CYFRA21-1 and hemoglobin may have a better predictive potential than CEA for long-term outcomes.

Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic implications of pretreatment circulating endothelial cells (CECs) and circulating endothelial progenitor cells (CEPCs) for the survival of patients with lung cancer. Materials and Methods: Relevant literature was identified using Medline and EMBASE. Patient clinical characteristics, overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) together with CEC and CEPC positive rates before treatment were extracted. STATA 12.0 was used for our analysis and assessment of publication bias. Results: A total of 13 articles (8 for CEC and 5 for CEPC, n=595 and n=244) were pooled for the global meta-analysis. The odds ratio (OR) for OS predicted by pretreatment CECs was 1.641 [0.967, 2.786], while the OR for PFS was 1.168 [0.649, 2.100]. The OR for OS predicted by pretreatment CEPCs was 12.673 [5.274, 30.450], while the OR for PFS was 4.930 [0.931, 26.096]. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to clinical staging. Odds ratio (OR) showed the high level of pretreatment CECs only correlated with the OS of patients with advanced lung cancer (stage III-IV). Conclusions: High counts of CECs seem to be associated only with worse 1-year OS in patients with lung cancer, while high level of pretreatment CEPCs correlate with both worse PFS and OS.

The micellization and the molecular interaction behaviors for two ternary mixtures constituted by anamphoteric sodium 3-(n-dodecyl ethylenediamino)-2-hydroxypropyl sulfonate (C12AS), an anionicsodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and a nonionic octylphenol polyoxyethylated ether with thenumber (n) of oxyethylene glycol ethers OP-n (n = 10 or 7) in aqueous solution were investigated usingthe tensiometry and the effect of hydrophilicity on them was also discussed. In the framework of pseudophaseseparation model and based on the regular solution theory, the related micellization parametersincluding the mixed critical micelle concentration (cmc) values in the ideal and real cases, the activitycoefficients and the compositions in mixed micelle, etc. and thermodynamic parameters were estimatedby the Clint’s model and the Rubingh’ model. The mixed cmc value is dependent on the composition inaqueous solution and influenced by the hydrophilicity of nonionic surfactant. With increasing the nonionicin ternary mixture, the mixed cmc value is initially decreased and then slightly rise. An increasingin the hydrophilicity of nonionic will make the minimum value of mixed cmc be increased from1.299 mM to 1.705 mM. The resulting phenomena can be explained reasonably by the electrostatic effect,the steric hindrance, the hydrogen bonding, etc. Thermodynamic data indicate that the contribution ofentropy or enthalpy plays a vital role on the spontaneous process of micellization and the share ofentropy or enthalpy in free energy change is dependent largely on the amount of nonionic surfactantand the hydrophilicity. In ternary mixtures of C12AS/SDBS/OP-10, an increase in an amount of OP-10 willinduce the change from the enthalpy-driven micellization process to the entropically favorable process. Once an abundant amount of OP-7 is added, while, the enthalpy will make a main contribution on themicellization process, which can be described by the drop in the share of entropy at the composition(0.6970/0.0000/0.3030) of ternary mixture from 0.6478 to 0.4901. These findings will help with understandingthe molecular interaction behavior for the ternary surfactant mixture and the effect of the additionof nonionic surfactant and its hydrophilicity.
