Double controller of wind induced bending oscillations in telecom towers

Battista, Ronaldo C.,Pfeil, Michele S.,Carvalho, Eliane M.L.,Varela, Wendell D. Techno-Press 2018 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.21 No.1

Wind induced large bending oscillation amplitudes in tall and slender telecommunication steel towers may lead to precocious fatigue cracks and consequent risk of collapse of these structures, many of them installed in rural areas alongside highways and in highly populated urban areas. Varying stress amplitudes at hot spots may be attenuated by means of passive control mechanical devices installed in the tower. This paper gives an account of both mathematical-numerical model and the technique applied to design and evaluate the performance of a double controller installed in existing towers which is composed by a nonlinear pendulum and a novel type of passive controller described herein as a planar motion disk mounted on shear springs. Results of experimental measurements carried out on two slender tubular steel towers under wind action demonstrate the efficiency of the double controllers in attenuating the towers bending oscillation amplitudes and consequent stress amplitudes extending the towers fatigue life.

Mixed Adenoneuroendocrine Gastric Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

        Giovanni Battista Levi Sandri,Fabio Carboni,Mario Valle,Alfredo Garofalo,Paolo Visca 대한위암학회 2014 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.14 No.1

We present a rare case of a gastric mixed adenoneuroendocrine tumor and review the related English literature. A 77-year-old Caucasian woman was admitted to our department with nausea, anorexia, weight loss, and anemia. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed a large (>7 cm) ulcerative mass in the greater curvature of the stomach. Biopsy showed the presence of an adenocarcinoma with moderate differentiation. The patient underwent D2 subtotal gastrectomy. Histopathological analysis revealed a diagnosis of mixed gastric adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma. The post-operative course was uneventful, and at the 6-month follow-up, the patient was alive without evidence of recurrence. Our review of the English literature suggested that such cases are most often reported from eastern countries. Multimodal treatment should be the aim for these patients because of the neuroendocrine component of the tumor.

      • RCCM Canons

Regular Complementary Canons of Maximal Category (RCCM) or Vuza canons were introduced to the musical world with Dan Tudor Vuza’s seminal papers in PNM in the 1990s. Since their original exposition, this important notion has known many developments and generalizations. Musicians have always been intrigued by canon construction, q.v. the complex polyphony of the Flemish composer Josquin Desprez or the contrapuntal techniques of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose properties have been translated into formal algebraic terms. Olivier Messiaen is maybe the first theorist and composer who introduced and studied the concept of rhythmic canon. From a mathematical point of view, the construction of rhythmic canons is formalized in terms of factorizations of finite cyclic groups as the sum of two subsets, a concept that probably Messiaen, like many other composers of the twentieth century, did not know. Nowadays the process of building mosaic canons can be implemented using programming languages: composers can access extremely complex macro-structures that can be taken as the basis for formal architectures of original music compositions. In this paper, we would like to show our implementation in Wolfram Mathematica, with an algorithm, that moves from the Franck Jedrzejewski one, which allows the composer to create and directly manage RCCM Canons. In addition, we use our algorithm to construct special patterns for real-time spatialization.

A system of multiple controllers for attenuating the dynamic response of multimode floor structures to human walking

Ronaldo C. Battista,Wendell D. Varela 국제구조공학회 2019 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.23 No.5

Composite floor structures formed by continuous slab panels may be susceptible to excessive vibrations, even when properly designed in terms of ultimate limit state criteria. This is due to the inherent vibration characteristics of continuous floor slabs composed by precast orthotropic reinforced concrete panels supported by steel beams. These floor structures display close spaced multimode vibration frequencies and this dynamic characteristic results in a non-trivial vibration problem. Structural stiffening and/or insertion of struts between floors are the usual tentative solution applied to existing vibrating floor structures. Such structural alterations are in general expensive and unsuitable. In this paper, this vibration problem is analyzed on the basis of results obtained from experimental measurements in typical composite floors and their theoretical counterpart obtained with computational modeling simulations. A passive control system composed by multiple synchronized dynamic attenuators (MSDA) was designed and installed in these floor structures and its efficiency was evaluated both experimentally and through numerical simulations. The results obtained from experimental tests of the continuous slab panels under human walking dynamic action proved the effectiveness of this control system in reducing vibrations amplitudes.

Risk indicators related to periimplant disease: an observational retrospective cohort study

Poli, Pier Paolo,Beretta, Mario,Grossi, Giovanni Battista,Maiorana, Carlo Korean Academy of Periodontology 2016 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.46 No.4

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to retrospectively investigate the influence of potential risk indicators on the development of peri-implant disease. Methods: Overall, 103 patients referred for implant treatment from 2000 to 2012 were randomly enrolled. The study sample consisted of 421 conventional-length (>6 mm) non-turned titanium implants that were evaluated clinically and radiographically according to preestablished clinical and patient-related parameters by a single investigator. A non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis rank test and a logistic regression model were used for the statistical analysis of the recorded data at the implant level. Results: The diagnosis of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis was made for 173 (41.1%) and 19 (4.5%) implants, respectively. Age (${\geq}65$ years), patient adherence (professional hygiene recalls <2/year) and the presence of plaque were associated with higher peri-implant probing-depth values and bleeding-on-probing scores. The logistic regression analysis indicated that age (P=0.001), patient adherence (P=0.03), the absence of keratinized tissue (P=0.03), implants placed in pristine bone (P=0.04), and the presence of peri-implant soft-tissue recession (P=0.000) were strongly associated with the event of peri-implantitis. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, patients aged ${\geq}65$ years and non-adherent subjects were more prone to develop peri-implant disease. Therefore, early diagnosis and a systematic maintenance-care program are essential for maintaining peri-implant tissue health, especially in older patients.

      • Monitoring and vibration control of a fluid catalytic cracking unit

        Wendell D. Varela,Ronaldo C. Battista,Igor Braz N. Gonzaga 국제구조공학회 2022 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.29 No.4

Oil refineries' Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units (FCCU) when in full operation may exhibit strong fluid dynamics caused by turbulent flow in the piping system that may induce vibrations in other mechanical and structural components of the Unity. This paper reports on the experimental-theoretical-computational program performed to get the vibration properties and the dynamic response amplitudes to find out alternative solutions to attenuate the excessive vibrations that were causing fatigue fractures in components of the bottle like reactor-regenerator of an FCC unit in operation in an existing oil refinery in Brazil. Solutions to the vibration problem were sought with the aid of a 3D finite element model calibrated with the results obtained from experimental measurements. A short description of the found solutions is given and their effectiveness are shown by means of numerical results. The solutions were guided by the concepts of structural stiffening and dynamic control performed by a nonlinear pendulum controller whose mechanical design was based on parameters determined by means of a parametric study carried out with 2D and 3D mathematical models of the coupled pendulum-structure system. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is evaluated in terms of the fatigue life of critical welded connections.
