The Influence of Zen Meditation on W. B. Yeats's The Double Vision of Michael Robartes
Vol.50 No.-
The purpose of this study is to show how “The Double Vision of Michael Robartes” mirrors the essence of Zen meditation. Not only is this poem patterned after the progressive procedure of Zen meditation, but it also reflects the fundamental concerns of Zen meditation, such as the problem of duality, the concept of time, and an aspiration for freedom from the limitation of this life. These features of Zen meditation are expressed through the use of specific symbols, the implications of setting, and various poetic techniques.
Wystan Hugh Auden and William Butler Yeats
Vol.42 No.-
This paper compares W. H. Auden’s “As I walked out one evening” with W. B. Yeats’s “Sailing to Byzantium” and “Among School Children,” focusing on one of its main concerns: the tyranny of time or ephemerality. However, the two poets’s attitudes towards and ways of coming to terms with the problem of time are completely different. Their difference basically stems from their different philosophies and thoughts on the role of literature in general, and poetry in particular, reflecting the period each poet represents: romanticism/ modern and modern / post-modern. Their main difference is mainly in the role of literature in our society. Yeats, as he calls himself a last romantic, still believes in the power of literature as a tool of changing people. Auden no longer buys such an idealistic view of literature. As the modern period turns into the post-modern, we come to witness the twilight of the subjective voice and power of a poet as a national bard.

Yeats has dealt with sexuality and the dead in his poems throughout his poetic career. An examination of his use of sexuality and the dead leads us to see that the poet employs them as a means of conveying his poetic, spiritual, and political message. In his early years, Yeats turns to sexual images to entice one to the world of the spirits. In his middle years, Yeats tries to revive the fallen Irish heroes in the collective Irish memory through sexual imagery. In his later years, Yeats elevates the image of sexuality to the level of a vision through which political, social, and religious divisions are dissolved and reconciled.
The Meaning of Tragedy and Sex in W. B. Yeats Later Poems
Vol.65 No.-
The paper tries to explore the significance of the order of William Butler Yeats’s “The Statues,” “News for the Delphic Oracle,” and “The Long-legged Fly.” My argument is that the placement of three poems reflects Yeats’s views of great art: starting with tragedy and ending with joy, or to be more exact, sex. The bridal chambers of joy, as Yeats puts it, is what art is all about. “The Statues” is a tragic poem, whereas “News for...” accounts for the joy of bridal chambers, which represents Yeats’s heaven or Utopia. It is significant to notice that the two poems are followed by “The Long-legged Fly”; it also deals with a similar idea of tragedy and sex, reinforcing and expanding the same theme of looking for Utopia developed in the previous two poems. Yeats’s pursuit of joy through art stems from his political agenda: leading the Irish people to the land of joy or Utopia. The Utopia Yeats dreams are future Ireland which is soon destined to rise as a new cradle of even higher civilization than the one in ancient Greece.
W. B. Yeats’s Byzantium Poems : A Search for a New Concept of Utopia
Vol.63 No.-
Two Byzantium poems reflect Yeats’s efforts to participate in the modernist concern with the cures of the problem of Western decline in the early twentieth century. Yeats, like Eliot and Pound, turned to the East for a solution. The two Byzantium poems were composed as part of Yeats’s attempts to offer a new spiritual tradition for western readers. Byzantium stands for the utopia fusing Western religious ideas and Eastern spiritual concepts. Here, Yeats weaves the Buddhist concepts of suffering and reincarnation and Eastern philosopher’s perception of human problems on the canvass of the Christian narrative tradition. This work can be thought of as the poet’s life-long struggle to embody the idea of Unity of Being. Located geographically in between the West and the East, Byzantium is an emblem of a new kind of Yeatsian religion, embracing both the West and the East.
The Epic Elements in Yeats’s Poetry
Vol.48 No.-
One of the marked characteristic features of modernist poetry includes its employment of the epic form, attesting to the fact that modernist poets made efforts to revive the highest and lofty form of poetic writing. And scholars do not hesitate to point to Ezra Pound’s The Cantos and T. S. Eliot’s The Wasteland as an example of modernist poems involving epic elements. My argument is that William Butler Yeats also needs to be included among the modernist poets who try to incorporate epic elements in his poems. Although Yeats did not write a poem which can be comparable to The Cantos and The Wasteland, a close examination of many of his poems leads us to see that they also retain some epic features, exemplifying the fact that the poet also looked back to the tradition not only for poetic inspiration but also for literary continuity.

Modern artists fell in love with Medusa’s double image of sexuality and death not only because for its aesthetic power to simultaneously repel and mesmerize the audience, but also because for its potential power to change the way we see and think. It seems that Crazy Jane also carries the DNA of Medusa in that she reconciles eroticism and violence. In so doing, Crazy Jane, like Medusa, becomes a symbol of revolutionary changes for the newly established Irish Free State which has moved to a direction Yeats opposes.
In the Seven Woods : A Process of Mystical Alchemy
Vol.37 No.-
I explore five poems in In the Seven Woods, the structural backbone of this book. The careful arrangement of the five poems shows the hero’s search for a Yeatsian Holy Grail. Yeats's most agonizing period of life falls somewhere between 1903 and 1908 when the book’s two different versions were published. As reiterated in the book, the final goal of mystical alchemy cannot be achieved in this world, but the on-going process of finding his Holy Grail lays bare the essence of his arts: an endless pursuit of Yeats’s artistic imagination.
Alchemical Narrative in W. B. Yeats’s Poetry
Vol.43 No.-
This paper first examines the meaning of an alchemical process and its symbolic implications, and then talks about how the process informs us of the various ways Yeats arranges the order of poems in his book. An alchemical process is none other than a series of steps to transform lead into gold. We see that Yeats imitates this process when organizing not only his poems but also his book of poems, both of which encapsulate the alchemical narrative, starting with chaos (the lead state) and ending with refinement (the gold state) or at least the possibility of purifying the coarse state suggested in the beginning. My basic argument is that the transformation from lead to gold is a symbolic process Yeats needs not only for his life but also for his country.
The Marriage of East and West in Yeats's "The Double Vision of Michael Robartes"
Vol.11 No.-
예이츠의 "The Double Vision of Michael Robartes"는 대개 그가 쓴 A Vision의 맥락에서 분석되어지고 있다.
