Study of wind tunnel test results of high-rise buildings compared to different design codes
Badri, Abdulmonem A.,Hussein, Manar M.,Attia, Walid A. Techno-Press 2015 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.20 No.5
Several international codes have been developed for evaluating wind loads on structures; however, the wind structure interaction could not be accurately captured by these codes due to the gusty nature of wind and the dynamic behavior of structures. Therefore, the alternative wind tunnel testing was introduced. In this study, an introduction to the available approaches for wind load calculations for tall buildings was presented. Then, a comparative study between different codes: the Egyptian code, ECP 201-08, ASCE 7-05, BS 6399-2, and wind tunnel test results was conducted. An investigation has been carried out on two case studies tall buildings located within the Arabian Gulf region. Numerical models using (ETABS) software were produced to obtain the relation between codes analytical values and wind tunnel experimental test results for wind loads in the along and across wind directions. Results for the main structural responses including stories forces, shears, overturning moments, lateral displacements, and drifts were presented graphically in order to give clear comparison between the studied methods. The conclusions and recommendations for future works obtained from this research are finally presented to help improving Egyptian code provisions and show limitations for different cases.
Nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of aqueous foam under large amplitude oscillatory shear flow
Badri Vishal,Pallab Ghosh 한국유변학회 2018 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.30 No.3
Aqueous foams are dispersions of gas bubbles in water, stabilized by surfactant, and sometimes particles. This multiphasic composition gives rise to complex rheological behavior under deformation. Understanding this behavior is important in many applications. Foam shows nonlinear rheological behavior at high deformation, which can be investigated by the large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) experiments. In the present work, we have performed a systematic LAOS study of foam stabilized by 0.1 mol m−3 hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and 0.5 wt.% silica nanoparticles. The Lissajous-Bowditch curves and stress waveforms were analyzed at various strain amplitudes. These curves were fitted by Fourier transform rheology and Chebyshev polynomials to understand the contribution of the higher harmonic terms in LAOS. The intracycle LAOS behavior was explained based on the sequence of physical processes. The foam exhibited intracycle strain-hardening and shear-thinning at high deformation. Shear-thickening behavior was observed at moderate deformations.
Investigating Tourism Seasonality in Nepal
Badri Prakash Pokhrel,Ji Young Jeong 전북대학교 산업경제연구소 2015 아태경상저널 Vol.7 No.2
Tourism industry is one of the largest source of foreign exchange and revenue in Nepal. The major objective of this study is to investigate the tourist arrival in Nepal on a monthly basis and its contributions in the economic development. Here, the calculated value of the Gini Coefficient (G) and Seasonality Index (SI) were used to evaluate the tourism seasonality in Nepal in the period of 1991-2013 (23 years). Gini Coefficient was found in lowest 0.1302 having low seasonality in Nepal. Tourists prefer to visit from October to November the most, due to the suitable weather for trekking and mountain climbing. At that seasons, there are different kind of cultural and religious festivals, as well the weather is perfectly pleasant with a clear sky and green countryside with great visibility. These factors attract tourists to travel in Nepal at autumn season. Thus, the number of tourists’ arrival in Nepal at autumn is relatively higher than other seasons (Pokhrel and Jeong, 2015). In this study, we also discuss the negative impacts of seasonality on Nepalese tourism and some suggestions to reduce the negative effects for attaining the positive outcome.
Sequence Analysis of the Gene Encoding H Antigen in Escherichia coli Isolated from Food in Morocco
Samira Badri,Aziz Fassouane,Ingrid Filliol,Mohammed Hassar,Nozha Cohen 한국미생물학회 2010 The journal of microbiology Vol.48 No.2
In order to develop other molecular method useful for typing of motile and non motile Escherichia coli strains, a total of 207 strains of E. coli (133 reference strains, 74 food strains) were characterized by analysis of sequences of their amplified flagellin-encoding (fliC) gene products. The collection of reference strains was used for database building of fliC gene sequences. Application of this identification system to 74 E. coli food isolates revealed a reproducible and clear cut classification with very good correlation to results obtained by HhaI restriction of the amplified flagellin gene. The proposed determination of fliC sequences variations should be helpful for epidemiological studies.
