Long noncoding RNAs in cancer cells
Bach, Duc-Hiep,Lee, Sang Kook Elsevier 2018 Cancer letters Vol.419 No.-

Abstract

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) has recently been investigated as key modulators that regulate many biological processes in human cancers via diverse mechanisms. LncRNAs can interact with macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, or protein to exert cellular effects and to act as either tumor promoters or tumor suppressors in various malignancies. Moreover, the aberrant expression of lncRNAs may be detected in multiple cancer phenotypes by employing the rapidly developing modern gene chip technology and bioinformatics analysis. Herein, we highlight the mechanisms of action of lncRNAs, their functional cellular roles and their involvement in cancer progression. Finally, we provide an overview of recent progress in the lncRNA field and future potential for lncRNAs as cancer diagnostic markers and therapeutics.

Highlights

lncRNAs might act as tumor promoters or tumor suppressors in cancer development.

lncRNAs are suggested as diagnostic and prognostic markers in cancer progression.

lncRNAs are key regulators of pathways involving each of the hallmarks of cancer.

The structurally well-defined diblock copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PMMA-b-PNIPAM) amphiphilic diblock copolymer was successfully grafted onto the surface of Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. In this approach, S-benzyl S'-trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonate was first immobilized onto the HNTs as the RAFT agent. The polymerization of MMA and NIPAM was then initiated and propagated on the HNTs surface by RAFT polymerization. The chemical structure and morphology of diblock copolymer grafted onto the HNTs surface were ascertained by FT-IR, and FE-SEM analyses. A moderate degree of functionalization of HNTs by polymer chains was obtained according to TGA results. This study has suggested a facile approach to prepare surface functionalized HNTs via RAFT polymerization, which is promising to open up a wider prospect for the fabrication and novel application of hybrid polymeric materials with diverse functionalities.

Hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPG) were covalently grown from hydroxyapatite nanocrystals (HAP NCs) via surface-initiated anionic ring-opening multibranching polymerization (SI-AROMP) of glycidol. HAP NCs were first functionalized by (3-mercaptopropyl)-trimethoxysilane to get HAP-SH NCs. Then, SI-AROMP of glycidol was accomplished to afford HPG grafted HAP NCs (HPG-g-HAP). The structure and morphology, and charge behavior of HPG-g-HAP nanocomposites were investigated by FT-IR, TGA, TEM, SEM, XRD, and zeta potential measurements. A model drug ibuprofen (IBU) was employed to evaluate the drug loading/release behavior of the HPG-g-HAP nanocomposites. In vitro IBU release profile suggested the nanocomposites as a promising drug delivery system (DDS).

Last year at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee there was a conference about the theory of syntax. Fourteen different theories of syntax wre discussed at this conference. The aim of the conference was to see if there could be some measure of agreement about syntactic theory. I did not attend the conference but I am told that at the end of the conference there were still fourteen theories of syntax, maybe even more. I like to look behind disagreements about details and notice agreements that were sometimes apparent in the heat of discussions and battle. I don't know about Korean linguists but in America linguists love to argue, and it is very hard for many linguists to say, "Yes", when someone says, "Well, you really agree with me, don't you?" Then they usually say, "No." There is a story about Noam Chomsky, who, I think, is perhaps most argumentative of all. He was giving a lecture at a university in Canada and someone in the audience got up and said, "Well, I agree with you because of this and this...," and Noam Chomsky immediately said, "No, you don't."

An approach to the surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles was described based on the thiol functionalization of TiO2 followed by thiol-lactam initiated radical polymerization (TLIRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA). FT-IR, XRD and XPS analyses confirmed the grafting of the polymer on the TiO2 surface. TGA analysis revealed superior thermal stability of PMMA-g-TiO2 compared with PMMA. TEM measurements and time-dependent phase monitoring suggested much higher colloidal stability of PMMA-g-TiO2 than TiO2 in toluene. The controlled nature of the TLIRP of MMA from the surface of TiO2 was determined by GPC analysis.

Efficacy of Ginseng Supplements on Fatigue and Physical Performance: a Meta-analysis
Bach, Hoang Viet,Kim, Jeongseon,Myung, Seung-Kwon,Cho, Young Ae The Korean Academy of Medical Sciences 2016 JOURNAL OF KOREAN MEDICAL SCIENCE Vol.31 No.12

We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction and physical performance enhancement as reported by randomized controlled trials (RCTs). RCTs that investigated the efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction and physical performance enhancement compared with placebos were included. The main outcome measures were fatigue reduction and physical performance enhancement. Out of 155 articles meeting initial criteria, 12 RCTs involving 630 participants (311 participants in the intervention group and 319 participants in the placebo group) were included in the final analysis. In the fixed-effect meta-analysis of four RCTs, there was a statistically significant efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction (standardized mean difference, SMD = 0.34; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16 to 0.52). However, ginseng supplements were not associated with physical performance enhancement in the fixed-effect meta-analysis of eight RCTs (SMD = −0.01; 95% CI = −0.29 to 0.27). We found that there was insufficient clinical evidence to support the use of ginseng supplements on reducing fatigue and enhancing physical performance because only few RCTs with a small sample size have been published so far. Further lager RCTs are required to confirm the efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction.
