Single and combined effects of Cu and Pb on life history traits of Lycosa terrestris and Pardosa birmanica (Araneae, Lycosidae)

        Butt Abida,Aziz Nida 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.1

Heavy metals are known to modulate the life history traits of spider species. This study aimed to explore the divergence in life-history traits, including survival, growth, development, and reproduction, in Pardosa birmanica and Lycosa terrestris housed on artificial soil or fed artificial food containing10mM of CuSO 4 and10mM of PbCl 2 either separately or in a binary mixture(i.e., 10 mM CuSO 4 + 10 mM PbCl 2 ) from 4 th to 8th instars under lab oratory conditions. The results revealed that all metals treatments caused developmental delays, and reduced growth rate. Metals treated females laid lower number of eggs with high hatching success but prolonged hatching time. The co-exposure of metals had great potential to affect the life-history traits of spiders than did Cu or Pb alone, specially by dietary uptake. This study demonstrated that the lifehistory traits of spider’s species provided sensitive endpoints and biomarkers for ecotoxicological risk assessments. Spiders are beneficial sentinel species and bioindicators because they help us monitor the risk to the organisms themselves and the ecosystem.

Acute Confusion as an Initial Presentation of SARS-CoV-2 Infection

        Butt Isabel,Ochoa-Ferraro Antonio,Dawson Charlotte,Madathil Shyam,Gautam Nandan,Sawlani Vijay,Geberhiwot Tarekegn 대한신경과학회 2021 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.17 No.3

Background and Purpose The respiratory manifestations of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have been extensively documented. There is emerging evidence that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has number of other presenting features which might not be related to the severity of the respiratory disease. We have previously described a case of hypoactive delirium as the first manifestation of COVID-19 without profound lung disease. Here we present five cases of elderly patients, without a prior history of dementia and had no overt COVID-19-related pneumonia, who presented with the acute onset of delirium as the primary manifestation of COVID-19. Methods This retrospective, single-center study performed a health informatics search to produce a list of patients who were admitted with acute confusion and tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus between March 1 and June 30, 2020. The electronic medical admission notes were screened for all patients with confusion who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Patients with a history of dementia and a high risk of delirium were excluded, such as severe COVID-19-related pneumonia or any other infection, malignancy, drugs, or severe illness of any kind. Results During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic our hospital experienced just over 3,000 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients, and 45 of them had documented confusion upon admission. Secondary causes for their acute confusion were excluded. Five patients were identified as having delirium as the initial presentation of COVID-19-related illness without significant COVID-19-related pneumonitis. None of them had overt chest symptoms or a previous history of confusion, and the 3 patients who underwent head CT scans had normal findings. Conclusions This case series illustrates the importance of recognizing acute confusion as the first manifestation of COVID-19 in susceptible individuals

      • Smoking, <i>Helicobacter Pylori</i> Serology, and Gastric Cancer Risk in Prospective Studies from China, Japan, and Korea

        Butt, Julia,Varga, Matthew G.,Wang, Tianyi,Tsugane, Shoichiro,Shimazu, Taichi,Zheng, Wei,Abnet, Christian C.,Yoo, Keun-Young,Park, Sue K.,Kim, Jeongseon,Jee, Sun Ha,Qiao, You-lin,Shu, Xiao-Ou,Waterboe AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH INC 2019 CANCER PREVENTION RESEARCH Vol.12 No.10

<P>Smoking is an established risk factor for gastric cancer development. In this study, we aimed to assess prospectively the association of smoking with gastric cancer risk in 1,446 non-cardia gastric cancer cases and 1,796 controls from China, Japan, and Korea with consideration of <I>Helicobacter pylori</I> infection as a potential effect modifier. Applying logistic regression models stratified by study and adjusted for age and sex we found that current, but not former, smoking was significantly associated with gastric cancer risk [OR = 1.33; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.07–1.65]. However, the association was significant only in <I>H. pylori</I> sero-positive individuals determined by 3 different sero-markers: overall sero-positivity, sero-positivity to the onco-protein CagA, and sero-positivity to the gastric cancer associated sero-marker HP0305 and HP1564. Specifically, a significant interaction was found when stratifying by HP0305/HP1564 (<I>P</I>interaction = 0.01) with a 46% increased risk of gastric cancer among HP0305/HP1564 sero-positive current smokers (95% CI, 1.10–1.93) as opposed to no increased gastric cancer risk among HP0305/HP1564 sero-negative current smokers (OR = 0.93; 95% CI, 0.65–1.33). We confirmed that current smoking is associated with an increased gastric cancer risk, however, only among individuals that are simultaneously sero-positive for the leading causal factor for gastric cancer, <I>H. pylori</I>.</P>

      • Effect of nucleating agents and stabilisers on the synthesis of Iron-Oxide Nanoparticles-XRD analysis

        Butt, Faaz A.,Jafri, Syed M. Mohsin Techno-Press 2015 Advances in nano research Vol.3 No.3

Iron nanoparticles were made by using the modified coprecipitation technique. Usually the characteristics of synthesised particles depend upon the process parameters such as the ratio of the iron ions, the pH of the solution, the molar concentration of base used, type of reactants and temperature. A modified coprecipitation method was adopted in this study. A magnetic stirrer was used for mixing and the morphology and nature of particles were observed after synthesis. Nanoparticles were characterised through XRD. Obtained nanoparticles showed the formation of magnetite and maghemite under citric acid and oxalic acid as stabilisers respectively. The size of nanoparticle was greatly affected by the use of different types of stabilisers. Results show that citric acid greatly reduced the obtained particle size. Particle size as small as 13 nm was obtained in this study. The effects of different kinds of nucleating agents were also observed and two different types of nucleating agents were used i.e. potassium hydroxide (KOH) and copper chloride ($CuCl_2$). Results show that the use of nucleating agent in general pushes the growth phase of nanoparticles towards the end of coprecipitation reaction. The particles obtained after addition of nucleating agent were greater in size than particles obtained by not utilising any nucleating agent. These particles have found widespread use in medical sciences, energy conservation and electronic sensing technology.

Characterizing Barium Titanate Piezoelectric Material Using the Finite Element Method

Butt, Zubair,Rahman, Shafiq Ur,Pasha, Riffat Asim,Mehmood, Shahid,Abbas, Saqlain,Elahi, Hassan The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2017 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.18 No.3

The aim of the current research was to develop and present an effective methodology for simulating and analyzing the electrical and structural properties of piezoelectric material. The finite element method has been used to make precise numerical models when dielectric, piezoelectric and mechanical properties are known. The static and dynamic responses of circular ring-shaped barium titanate piezoelectric material have been investigated using the commercially available finite element software ABAQUS/CAE. To gain insight into the crystal morphology and to evaluate the purity of the material, a microscopic study was conducted using a scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. It is found that the maximum electrical potential of 6.43 V is obtained at a resonance frequency of 35 Hz by increasing the vibrating load. The results were then compared with the experimentally predicted data and the results agreed with each other.

      • Social Internet of Vehicles: Architecture and enabling technologies

Butt, Talal Ashraf,Iqbal, Razi,Shah, Sayed Chhattan,Umar, Tariq Elsevier 2018 Computers & electrical engineering Vol.69 No.-

<P>The key goal of Internet of Things (IoT) has been the provision of value-added services based on the ubiquitously available smart devices that can offer diverse services by interacting with each other. However, the paradigm has evolved to its next phase, Social Internet of Things (SIoT), with the inception of an idea to empower these devices with consciousness. This cognizance enables these smart devices to socialize with each other based on shared context and mutual interests. The Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV) applies SIoT concepts in the vehicular domain to revolutionize the existing ITS (Intelligent Transport System) by adding value to existing VANET (Vehicular Ad-hoc Network) technology. This paper presents a scalable SIoV architecture based on Restful web technology. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes the importance of web technology to meet the required interoperability to support the composition of numerous services. The paper also discusses the enabling technologies and protocols.</P>

DESIGN PROBLEM SOLVED BY OPTIMAL CONTROL THEORY

Butt, Rizwan 한국전산응용수학회 1997 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.4 No.1

In this paper we present an application to airfoil design of an optimum design method based on optimal control theory. The method used here transforms the design problem by way of a change of variable into an optimal control problem for a distributed system with Neumann boundary control. This results in a set of variational inequalities which is solved by adding a penalty term to the differential equation. This si inturn solved by a finite element method.

      • Synthesis and structure-activity relationship of tyrosinase inhibiting novel bi-heterocyclic acetamides: Mechanistic insights through enzyme inhibition, kinetics and computational studies

        Butt, Abdul Rehman Sadiq,Abbasi, Muhammad Athar,Aziz-ur-Rehman, Muhammad Athar,Siddiqui, Sabahat Zahra,Raza, Hussain,Hassan, Mubashir,Shah, Syed Adnan Ali,Shahid, Muhammad,Seo, Sung-Yum Elsevier 2019 Bioorganic chemistry Vol.86 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The present research was designed for the selective synthesis of novel bi-heterocyclic acetamides, <B>9a-n</B>, and their tyrosinase inhibition to overwhelm the problem of melanogenesis. The structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by spectral techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and EI-MS along with elemental analysis. The inhibitory effects of these bi-heterocyclic acetamides (<B>9a-n</B>) were evaluated against tyrosinase and all these molecules were recognized as potent inhibitors relative to the standard used. The Kinetics mechanism was analyzed by Lineweaver-Burk plots which explored that compound, <B>9h</B>, inhibited tyrosinase competitively by forming an enzyme-inhibitor complex. The inhibition constants K<I> i </I> calculated from Dixon plots for this compound was 0.0027 µM. The computational study was coherent with the experimental records and these ligands exhibited good binding energy values (kcal/mol). The hemolytic analysis revealed their mild cytotoxicity towards red blood cell membranes and hence, these molecules can be pondered as nontoxic medicinal scaffolds for skin pigmentation and related disorders.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Synthesis of novel bi-heterocyclic acetamides and their tyrosinase inhibition to overwhelm the problem of melanogenesis. </LI> <LI> <I>In vitro</I> and <I>in silico</I> analysis were performed to check their inhibitory potential against tyrosinase enzymes. </LI> <LI> The molecules with small sized methyl group/s at <I>ortho</I>-position/s in aryl part or a flexible phenethyl group, generally inhibited the tyrosinase in an excellent manner. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
