Foreign Direct Investment and Skill Formation in China

Bharati Basu,Jianfeng Yao 한국국제경제학회 2009 International Economic Journal Vol.23 No.2

Using panel data analyses, this paper examines the relation between human capital formation and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in China. It shows that FDI has a significant effect on human capital formation, at least for the period 1995-2001. When we estimate the relationship between FDI and skill formation for the coastal and non-coastal provinces separately, the positive relationship is maintained, and this relationship also holds when we consider investment in real estate or the ratio of number of foreign firms to total number of firms investing in China. The results stand robust in the causality test and the sensitivity analysis.

Global Kidney Health Atlas: a spotlight on the Asia-Pacific sector

Bharati Joyita,Jha Vivekanand 대한신장학회 2022 Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Vol.41 No.1

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a unique public health problem in terms of high expenses required for its management and its increasing worldwide incidence. Understanding the existing structure of CKD treatment and its epidemiology is pivotal for equitable kidney care globally. The Global Kidney Health Atlas (GKHA) was launched by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) in 2017 as a part of its “Bridging the Gaps” strategy with a vision to understand the global kidney care capacity. Two rounds of GKHA surveys were conducted and published in 2017 and 2019, respectively. The GKHA surveys showed significant variability in kidney care among global regions. Asia is the largest of all continents and distinct for its heterogeneity. The Asia-Pacific sector comprises four main regional constructs of the ISN; North and East Asia, Oceania and South East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. Kidney care capacity varies among these regions in terms of government spending, epidemiology of kidney diseases, and workforce availability. In this narrative review, we highlight the differences in kidney care delivery among the regions of the Asia-Pacific sector based on information from GKHA and emphasize the priority areas on which stakeholders should concentrate their efforts.

      • Laboratory Project at Asian Institute of Technology Proves Valuable in Developing Specialty Chemical Applications for Asian Pulp Mills

        REKHA BHARATI,MIKE SCHOFIELD,AKHLESH K. MATHUR 한국펄프·종이공학회 2006 한국펄프종이학회 기타 간행물 Vol.- No.-

The application of specialty chemicals in a pulp mill system for the purpose of problem solving or process enhancement is often demonstrated and supported by data produced in laboratory testing. Hercules Chemical Solutions Pte Ltd., a major specialty chemical supplier to the Asian pulp and paper industry, partnered with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on several occasions to provide insight into the efficacy of proposed chemical treatments designed for local operating conditions and wood species. This paper presents an example of a chemically-assisted deresination project. The resulting surfactant chemistry proved to be a superior deresinator for plantation grown acacia wood and has been successfully implemented in an Asian pulp and paper mill.

      • Recovery from an Early-Life Shock through Improved Access to Schools: Evidence from Indonesia

        Tushar Bharati,Dawoon Jung(정다운) 한국재정학회(구 한국재정·공공경제학회) 2019 한국재정학회 학술대회 논문집 Vol.2019 No.2

We examine the extent to which improved access to schools can help individuals overcome the impact of early-life resource shocks as proxied by low rainfall in the first year of life. Using information from the fifth wave of the Indonesian Family Life Survey, we show that individuals who experienced relatively low levels of rainfall in the first year of life have lower educational attainment. Next, using exogenous geographic variation in the intensity of an Indonesian primary school construction program, we show that individuals who experienced low rainfall in the first year of life but were later exposed to a primary school construction program recovered completely from their educational deficit. For individuals who did not experience the adverse rainfall shock in their first year of life, the school construction had no significant impact in the initial years. Evidence suggests that this was, in part, a result of deteriorating school infrastructure and increased competition to get into middle and high schools that accompanied the primary school construction and affected the high-rainfall individuals disproportionately.

INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION AND WELFARE IN THE PRESENCE OF NON - TRADED GOODS : AN INTERCONNECTED MARKETS APPROACH

BASU, BHARATI 한국국제경제학회 1992 International Economic Journal Vol.6 No.4

This paper shows that if the terms of trade are determined endogenously for an open economy with a non-traded good sector, emigration results in favorable changes in the terms of trade for the remaining residents of the country (non-migrants). These changes and the gift of non-removable capital resources to non-migrants may offset the welfare loss which results from the loss of trading opportunity the non-migrants had with the migrants before migration occurred. Thus, the non-migrants may gain in welfare as a result of migration.

Validity of the vertical tube-shift method in determining the relationship between the mandibular third molar roots and the inferior alveolar nerve canal

        Anjana Arora,Bharati A. Patil,Amandeep Sodhi 대한구강악안면외과학회 2015 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.41 No.2

Objectives: To assess the validity of the vertical tube-shift method using intraoral periapical radiography (IOPAR) for determining the relationship between the mandibular third molar roots and the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) canal in comparison with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Fifty impacted mandibular third molars were analyzed using the IOPAR vertical tube-shift method and CBCT. The relationship of the IAN canal to the impacted mandibular third molar was recorded as buccal, lingual or in line with the apex and was compared with CBCT findings. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of the vertical tube-shift method in depicting the relationship (buccal/lingual/in line with the apex) of the IAN canal to the third molar root apex was calculated. Results: The sensitivity and specificity PPV and NPV of the IOPAR vertical tube-shift technique was found to be highest for a lingual relationship (100%) followed by buccal (94.4%, 92.3%, 97.1%, and 85.7%) and in line with the apex relationship (88.9%, 95.0%, 80.0%, and 97.4%) of the IAN canal with the third molar root apex, respectively. A statistically significant association was observed between the IOPAR vertical tube-shift method and the CBCT with a P-value <0.01. Conclusion: The vertical tube-shift method can be used as an effective diagnostic tool in assessing the relationship of the IAN canal to the third molar root apex with high sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV.

Effect of Mg doping on the electrical properties of SnO2 nanoparticles

        N. Mazumder,A. Bharati,S. Saha,D. Sen,K.K. Chattopadhyay 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.3

Sol-gel derived Mg doped tin oxide (Sn1-xMgxO2) nanocrystals were synthesized with x ranging between 0.5 and 7 at. %. Characteristic single phase tetragonal structure of pure and doped samples was obtained and doping saturation was inferred by X-ray diffraction analysis. Structural, morphological and phase informations were obtained by high resolution transmission electron microscope, field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy respectively whereas bonding information was obtained from Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Measurement of different electrical parameters with frequency (200 Hze105 Hz) has been carried out at room temperature. Ultrahigh dielectric constant and metallic AC conductivity were observed for undoped tin oxide and the profiles reflected highly sensitive changes in the atomic and interfacial polarizability generated by doping concentrations. Relaxation spectra of tangent loss of any sample did not show any loss peak within the frequency range. Both the grain and grain boundary contributions are observed to increase as the doping concentration increased. Results of first principle calculation based on density functional theory indicated effective Fermi level (EF) suppression due to Mg doping which is responsible for the experimentally observed conductivity variation. AC conductivity was found to depend strongly on the doping concentration and the defect chemistry of the compound. Mg doped SnO2 may find applications as a low loss dielectric and high density energy storage material.
