        Biomechanical Properties of the Cranial Dura Mater with Puncture Defects : An In Vitro Study

        Objective : The primary aim of this investigation was to explore the nature of dura mater biomechanics following the introduction of puncture defect(s). Methods : Twenty-eight dura mater specimens were collected during autopsy from the department of forensic medicine of the authors' institution. Specimens were divided randomly into one of four groups : group I (cranial dura mater; n=7), group II (cranial dura mater with one puncture defect; n=7); group III (cranial dura mater with two puncture defects; n=7), and group IV (cranial dura mater with three puncture defects; n=7). Results : The mean±standard deviation tensile strengths of the dura mater were 8.35±3.16, 8.22±3.32, 7.13±1.77, and 6.94±1.93 MPa for groups I, II, III, and IV, respectively. There was no statistical difference between all groups. A single, two or more punctures of the dura mater using a 20-gauge Quincke needle did not affect cranial dura tensile strength. Conclusion : This biomechanical study may contribute to the future development of artificial dura mater substitutes and medical needles that have a lower negative impact on the biomechanical properties of dura mater.

        Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection and Woven Coronary Artery: Three Cases and a Review of the Literature

        Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and woven coronary artery anomaly (WCAA) are relatively rare. A few of the previously reported woven coronary artery cases have involved in a single coronary artery. We present an unusual woven case involving all coronary arteries and two patient with SCAD. We have also reviewed the literature related to these disease, as they resemble one another.

        The relationships between isometric muscle strength and respiratory functions of the Turkish National Paralympic Goalball Team

        Goalball is a unique sport for only blind and visually disabled people to prevent physical inactivity and its harmful consequences. Determining the profile of physical fitness parameters and their relationship is cru-cial for all sports discipline. The purpose of the study is to determine the characteristics and the relationship between isometric muscle strength and respiratory functions. A total of 14 (10 female, four male athletes) goalball athletes were included in the study. Upper-extremity, lower-ex-tremity and trunk isometric muscle strength and pulmonary function tests measurements were performed to the athletes on two different days. The relationship between parameters was evaluated by Spear-man correlation test. Strength and pulmonary function parameters were higher in male athletes (P<0.05). A medium/strong/very strong correlation was found between respiratory function and upper extremi-ty isometric muscle strength (r=0.529–0.917, P<0.05). A moderate/strong correlation was found between lower extremity isometric mus-cle strength and respiratory function (r=0.534–0.867, P<0.05). A moder-ate correlation was found between trunk isometric muscle strength and respiratory function (r=0.538–0.640, P<0.05). It was seen that respirato-ry functions were associated with upper-lower extremity and trunk muscle strength. With this result, the idea arises that strength exercises can affect the improvement of respiratory function in individuals with disabilities, which is very important for both overall health and sports performance.

        Maxillary Ameloblastoma Case of a Dog

        In this report, an ameloblastoma case, which has been occurred on the left maxilla of a 10 year-old, male, German shepherd, was described on the clinical and morphological features. The mass with the dimensions of 5 x 2.5 cm was removed totally by maxillectomy and examined by radiography, magnetic resonance (MR) and biopsy. The tumor was histopathologically classified ameloblastoma of follicular type and in some fields showed acanthotic form. The invasiveness of the tumor was also observed to be high. This report is the first case of maxillary ameloblastoma in dogs in Turkey.

        Sociological Observations on ‘Strangerhood' : Attributions in European History

        This article deals with two questions: How are individuals or groups categorised as ‘strangers' Which socio-political mechanisms (structural aspects) or governmental policies (political aspects) play a role in this categorisation? ‘Stranger' is understood as a person who is perceived and categorised as stranger, and became target of resentments and stigmatisation. The thesis supported in this article is as follows: The both semantics (ideas, concepts, notions, explanations etc.) of strangerhood as well as the socio-political situation and status of strangers vary in the European history and correlate with societal structure.

        The effect of different neural mobilization exercises on hamstring flexibility and functional flexibility in wrestlers

        This study aimed to compare the short-term effects of sciatic nerve neural sliding and neural stretching exercises on hamstring muscle length and functional flexibility in wrestlers. The study participants in-cluded 74 wrestlers. The athletes were randomly divided into two groups: neural sliding and neural stretching groups. The hamstring flexibility and the functional flexibility were assessed using the active knee ex-tension limitation (AKEL) angle and the sit and reach (SR) test one day before and immediately after the neural mobilization exercises, respec-tively. A three-way repeated measures analysis of variance was con-ducted that examined the effect of mobilization type, time, and gender on interest in AKEL right leg, AKEL left leg, and SR test. There is not a significant difference between the effect of two different mobilizations on AKEL right and left leg, and SR test (P>0.05). It was determined there is statistically significant differences between premobilization and post-mobilization outcome measures for AKEL right leg (F=59.886, P=0.001), AKEL left leg (F=31.896, P=0.001), and SR test (F=22.630, P=0.001). There is not a statistically significant difference between males and females by these three measures neural sliding and neural stretching exercises to the sciatic nerve in wrestlers were effective in increasing hamstring flexibility and functional flexibility and not superior to each other.

        Optimization of gold recovery from copper anode slime by acidic ionic liquid

        Hydrometallurgical gold recovery from primary or secondary sources is mainly based on a cyanide process, which is very dangerous for the environment due to the high toxicity levels. In view of the environmental effect, the present study proposes a new green solvent called 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hydrogen sulfate (EmimHSO4) ionic liquid (IL) to recover gold from copper anode slime (CAS). The optimum leaching conditions for maximizing gold recovery were determined by orthogonal array (OA) of Taguchi's experimental design method. OA L16 (44) including four parameters with four levels each, was used to examine the effects of IL concentration (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% v/v), temperature (25, 50, 75, 95 oC), time (½, 1, 2, 4 h) and solid/liquid ratio (1/10, 1/15, 1/20, 1/25 g/mL) on leaching efficiency of the gold recovery. Statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the relevance between experimental conditions and gold recovery. The selective leaching tests results showed that gold recovery up to 89.07% was attained on laboratory scale under the optimum leach conditions: 80% IL concentration, 75 oC, 4 h and 1/25 g/mL solid/liquid ratio. According to these results, EmimHSO4 IL provides a very good ambiance for the oxidative leaching of gold and can be offered as an alternative leaching agent instead of harmful cyanide-based solvents.

        Maximal Exercise-Corrected QT as a Predictor of Coronary Artery Disease: Comparison of Simpler Heart Rate Corrections

        Background and Objectives: The relationship between QT prolongation and myocardial ischemia is widely known. Due to the limited value of ST depression, we aimed to evaluate, by using four simpler heart rate corrections (Bazett, Framingham, Fridericia and Hodges), the value of maximal exercise-QTc prolongation in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) presence and severity. Subjects and Methods: We enrolled 234 subjects (mean age 57.3±9 years, 143 men) who had undergone exercise testing and coronary angiography due to a suspicion of CAD in the study. Evaluating CAD severity with Gensini scoring, the CAD group (n=122) and controls with non-CAD were compared in terms of corrected QT duration at maximal exercise. Results: Age, gender, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, exercise duration, resting, and peak heart rate were similar between the two groups (all p>0.05). The CAD group had higher raw QT values than the controls {268 (169-438) vs. 240 (168-348), p<0.001}. Although Fra-mingham QTc of ≥350 ms and Fridericia QTc of ≥340 ms were seen to be useful for the diagnosis of CAD, there was no additive diagnostic value of exercise QTc in addition to ST depression. Maximal exercise-QTc Bazett (r=0.163, p=0.01), Framingham (r=0.239, p=0.001), and Fri-dericia (r=0.206, p=0.001) equations were weakly positively correlated with Gensini scoring. Conclusion: The patients with CAD have longer QTc intervals at peak heart rates during exercise. This finding provides insufficient evid-ence to support routine incorporation of QTc at peak heart rates into exercise test interpretation.

        Evaluation of the alignment efficiency of nickeltitanium and copper-nickel-titanium archwires in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment over a 12-week period: A single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial

        Objective: The aim of this trial was to compare the alignment efficiency and intermaxillary arch dimension changes of nickel-titanium (NiTi) or copper-nickeltitanium (CuNiTi) round archwires with increasing diameters applied sequentially to the mandibular arch. Methods: The initial alignment phase of fixed orthodontic treatment with NiTi or CuNiTi round archwires was studied in a randomly allocated sample of 66 patients. The NiTi group comprised 26 women, 10 men, and the CuNiTi(27℃) group comprised 20 women, 10 men. The eligibility criteria were as follows: anterior mandibular crowding of minimum 6 mm according to Little's Irregularity Index (LII), treatment requiring no extraction of premolars, 12 to 18 years of age, permanent dentition, skeletal and dental Class I malocclusion. The main outcome measure was the alignment of the mandibular anterior dentition; the secondary outcome measure was the change in mandibular dental arch dimensions during 12 weeks. Simple randomization (allocation ratio 1:1) was used in this single-blind study. LII and mandibular arch dimensions were measured on three-dimensional digital dental models at 2-week intervals. Results: No statistically significant difference was observed between NiTi and CuNiTi according to LII (p > 0.05). Intercanine and intermolar arch perimeters increased in the CuNiTi group (p < 0.001). Inter-first premolar width showed a statistically significant interaction in week × diameter ×application (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The effects of NiTi and CuNiTi round archwires were similar in terms of their alignment efficiency. However, the intercanine and intermolar arch perimeters, and the inter-first premolar width changes differed between groups.

        Overall Cost Optimization of Prestressed Concrete Bridge using Genetic Algorithm

        Overall cost optimization of Prestressed Concrete (PC) bridges is investigated in this study. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum span number and optimum cross-sectional properties of multi-span bridges. Considered bridge superstructure is constituted by adjacent simply supported pretensioned prestressed I-girders. Also, considered bridge substructure is constituted by single-column piers and rectangular spread footings. Span number, cross-section dimensions of prestressed girders and the area of Prestressing Steel (PS) are considered as design variables. PC girders, piers and footings are designed according to AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. A modified hybrid Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used for the optimum design. Working stress, ultimate strength, ductility limits, deflection, and geometry constraints are considered. Total cost of the bridge is taken as optimality criterion. A computer program is coded to perform optimum design and numerical examples from the application are designed. One of these examples is used in this paper. It is concluded that GA can be effectively used in the overall cost optimization of PC bridges.
