        Effect of Floral Organ Sizes on Female Reproductive Success in Erythronium japonicum (Liliaceae)

        We examined the effects of floral organ size on female reproductive success in self-incompatible Erythronium japonicum. We measured tepal size and anther-stigma separation and investigated the relationship between these measurements and fruiting and seeding success. We found that tepal length was positively correlated with fruiting success and the number of seeds per fruit This suggests that pollinator attraction is affected by tepal length in E. japonicum and that the number of pollinator visits affects female reproductive success. Anther-stigma separation was the most variable floral trait measured and was not correlated with either fruiting or seeding success in this species, suggesting that the proportion of outcross pollen deposited on stigmas by pollinators does not increase with anther-stigma separation. This is inconsistent with a previous report on Etyyhtonium. grandiflorum. Pollinaotr size might explain this interspecific difference in the effect of anther-stigma separation on female reproductive success.

      • Wireless Sensor System Using Surface Acoustic Wave Devices

        A new RFID tag system has been designed by utilizing a reflective surface acoustic wave (SAW) delay line. Ashear horizontal mode SAW (SH-SAW) has the unique characteristic of complete reflection at an edge normal to the direction of propagation. This characteristic makes it possible to construct a reflective delay line. The reflective delayline can be used to construct passive sensors that measure from a remote location. In this paper, a reflective SAW delay line is utilized to fabricate a passive sensor and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. Experimental results showed that the reflective delay lines are very suitable in making SAW RFID tags. Moreover, some applications of the SH-SAW RFID tags are demonstrated for measurement of the acoustic properties of liquids and strain of solid.

        <sup>123</sup>I-Labeled oxLDL Is Widely Distributed Throughout the Whole Body in Mice

        Purpose Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) plays a key role in endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation, and atherogenesis. The aim of this study was to assess blood clearance and in vivo kinetics of radiolabeled oxLDL in mice. Methods We synthesized $^{123}I-oxLDL$ by the iodine monochloride method, and performed an uptake study in CHO cells transfected with lectin-like oxLDL receptor-1 (LOX-1). In addition, we evaluated the consistency between the $^{123}I-oxLDL$ autoradiogram and the fluorescence image of DiI-oxLDL after intravenous injection for both spleen and liver. Whole-body dynamic planar images were acquired 10 min post injection of $^{123}I-oxLDL$ to generate regional time-activity curves (TACs) of the liver, heart, lungs, kidney, head, and abdomen. Regional radioactivity for those excised tissues as well as the bladder, stomach, gut, and thyroid were assessed using a gamma counter, yielding percent injected dose (%ID) and dose uptake ratio (DUR). The presence of $^{123}I-oxLDL$ in serum was assessed by radio-HPLC. Results The cellular uptakes of $^{123}I-oxLDL$ were identical to those of DiI-oxLDL, and autoradiograms and fluorescence images also exhibited consistent distributions. TACs after injection of $^{123}I-oxLDL$ demonstrated extremely fast kinetics. The radioactivity uptake at 10 min post-injection was highest in the liver ($40.8{\pm}2.4%$ ID). Notably, radioactivity uptake was equivalent throughout the rest of the body ($39.4{\pm}2.7%$ ID). HPLC analysis revealed no remaining $^{123}I-oxLDL$ or its metabolites in the blood. Conclusion $^{123}I-oxLDL$ was widely distributed not only in the liver, but also throughout the whole body, providing insight into the pathophysiological effects of oxLDL.

        Development and characterization of 24 polymorphic microsatellite markers for bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus

        The bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) is a notorious exotic fish, which causes serious damages to freshwater ecosystems in the world. Therefore, it is a matter of urgency to control this species for the conservation of ecosystem. New microsatellite loci were developed for L. macrochirus using high throughput 454 GS-FLX+ pyrosequencing. We selected 24 primer pairs that were tested on 47 individuals from Lake Biwa, which encompasses the oldest and largest population of L. macrochirus in Japan. Allele per locus varied 2–17. Expected and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.185 to 0.888 and 0.120 to 0.872, respectively. Applied to L. macrochirus in Lake Biwa, these markers could detect genetic differentiation among populations, which showed a pattern of isolation by distance. These markers are expected to be useful in the estimation of population structure and ecology of L. macrochirus.

        Pt/Co 인공격자다층막의 자기특성에 관한 연구

        Pt/Co인공격자다층막($[Pt10.7\;{\AA}/Co2.8\;{\AA}]{\times}12$)의 자기특성 및 기록특성이 시료제작시의 조건 (sputtering gas압력, sputtering gas 종류, buffer층의 유무 및 etching)에 따라 어떻게 변화하는지를 알아보았다. Pt/Co다층막의 자기특성은 Tb-Fe-Co계 아몰퍼스재료와 거의 동등한 특성이 얻어졌으며 이다층막을 이용한 광자기디스크의 기록특성은 kerr회전각, 1.23도, 기록 power 특성, 36dB(레이저파장: 780nm)을 나타내어 Pt/Co다층막이 차세대광자기디스크용 재료로서의 실용화가능성을 보여주었다. We have investigated how the magneto-optical and recording properties of Pt/Co modulated films vary with sample preparation conditions : sputtering at various gas pressures, sputtering with Xe instead of Ar, and etching the buffer layers, etc. The magneto-optical characteristics of Pt/Co multilayers was comparable with those of currently prevailing rare-earth transition-metal alloys(Tb-Fe-Co amorphous films). On a disk of $12{\times}[Pt10.7\;{\AA}/Co2.8{\;}{\AA}]$ multilayer enhanced with 70nm silicon nitride, we have achieved a CNR of 36dB with a reading laser(${\lambda}\;=\;780nm$) power of 2.5-4.5mW for 720KHz carrier at 1.4m/s and the enhanced kerr rotation angle of $1.23^{\circ}$ at 780nm. It is suggested that Pt/Co modulated films clearly are very promising magneto-optical materials for a commercially use.

        가을철 소청도를 통과하는 수리과(Accipitridae) 조류의 이동 현황

        본 연구는 가을철 소청도를 통과하는 수리과(Accipitridae) 조류의 현황을 파악하고자 2009년 9월 19일부터 10월 6일까지 18일간 실시되었다. 본 조사에서 총 10종 5,014개체의 수리과 조류가 관찰되었으며, 그중에서 벌매가 가장 많은 4,372개체(87.2%)가 관찰되었다. 일별로 관찰된 종수는 9월말부터 10월초까지 서서히 증가하다가 유지되는 경향을 나타낸 반면에 개체수는 서서히 감소하여 10월초에는 적은 개체수가 관찰되었다. 이것은 관찰집단의 87.2%를 차지하는 벌매가 9월말에 집중적으로 통과하기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 시간대별로는 주로 9시부터 12시 사이의 오전에 이동하는 것으로 나타났고, 10시부터 11시 사이에 가장 많은 개체(908개체, 18.1%)의 이동이 확인되었다. 전체적인 경향은 벌매가 9월말에 집중적으로 통과하고 조롱이, 새매, 그리고 참매는 10월 초에 집중적으로 통과하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 소청도는 한반도를 통과는 수리과 조류의 중요한 중간기착지 또는 경유지인 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 번식지와 월동지 사이를 이동하기 위해 거쳐 가야하는 중간기착지 또는 경유지의 이동 현황 파악이 우선 되어야 할 것이며, 본 지역에 대한 수리과 조류의 지속적인 이동조사가 필요할 것으로 판단된다. We investigated the status of Accipitridae on Socheong Island from 19 September to 6 October 2009. In total 5,014 individuals of 10 Accipitridae species were observed, and the Oriental Honey Buzzard was the most abundant migrating raptor (4,372 birds, 87.2%). The number of species observed by days increased and maintained from the end of September to the beginning of October. But the number of individuals was slowly decreased and only a few individuals observed in the beginning of October. This results is because Oriental Honey Buzzard which comprised 87.2% of total migrating raptors, passed intensively in the end of September. We confirmed that they mainly migrated between 9:00 and 12:00, and the peak migration was between 10:00 and 11:00 (908 birds, 18.1%). Overall, Oriental Honey Buzzards passed intensively in the end of September, and Japanese Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and Northern Goshawk passed intensively in the beginning of October. The results of this study show that Socheong Island is important for internationally endangered Accipitridae species as an essential stopover site during their autumn migration.

        가을철 어청도의 매목(Falconiformes) 조류의 현황 및 벌매(Pernis ptilorhynchus)의 이동 양상

        본 연구는 가을철 어청도의 매목(Falconiformes) 조류의 현황 및 벌매(Pernis ptilorynchus)의 이동 양상을 파악하고자 2008년 9월 27일부터 10월 2일 사이에 실시되었다. 본 조사에서 총 12종 505개체의 매목 조류가 관찰되었으며, 그 중에서 벌매가 가장 많은 350개체(69.3%)가 관찰되었다. 특히, 벌매는 정오를 중심으로 오후에 관찰된 개체수가 익일 오전에 관찰된 개체수와 비슷한 양상을 나타내었다. 이는 오후 늦게 도착한 개체들이 어청도에 머물다가 익일 일출 이후 기온상승과 함께 발생하는 상승기류를 이용하여 중국으로 이동을 개시하기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 벌매는 이동에 있어 풍속이 5㎧ 이상의 강한 바람을 선호하지 않는 것으로 나타났고, 풍향은 북풍일 때 가장 많은 이동 개체수가 확인되었다. 이처럼 풍속과 풍향은 벌매의 이동에 있어서 중요하게 영향을 주는 요소라고 판단된다. We researched the status of Falconiformes and migration pattern of Oriental Honey Buzzard (Pernis ptilorynchus) on Eocheong Island during autumn from 27 Sep. 2008 to 6 Oct. 2008. In total 505 individuals of 12 Falconiformes species were observed, and the Oriental Honey Buzzard was the most abundant migrating raptor (350 birds, 69.3%). It is worth to note that the number of the Oriental Honey Buzzards in afternoon was similar to their number in the subsequent morning. This result suggests that this species take rest during night on Eocheong Island and then they start migration again to China using thermal air in next morning. They did not prefer strong winds (≥ 5 ㎧), and most of them use wind directed from North to South. This suggests that wind speed and direction are important environmental factors for migration of the Oriental Honey Buzzard.
