Determination of antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds for basic standardization of Turkish propolis

Özkök Aslı,Keskin Merve,Tanuğur Samancı Aslı Elif,Yorulmaz Önder Elif,Takma Çiğdem 한국응용생명화학회 2021 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.64 No.2

This study aimed to determine the standard amount of antioxidant content and compounds of the propolis for the standardization of propolis. For this purpose, the total flavonoids, total phenolic, CUPRAC antioxidant capacity content and the diversity of phenolic and flavonoid components of these propolis samples were found by HPLC determined at the 23 propolis samples which were collected different regions of Turkey. Beside that, the similarities and differences of these 23 provinces to each other according to their antioxidant capacities were investigated by multidimensional scaling analysis. The total flavonoid content in the propolis samples were determined between 21.28 and 152.56 mg CE/g. The total phenolic content in the propolis samples was found between 34.53 mg and 259.4 mg GAE/g. CUPRAC antioxidant capacity of the propolis samples and antioxidant range was found from 95.35 to 710.43 mg TE/g. Also, 4 flavonoid [Quercetin (min.1.12–max.4.14 mg/g), Galangin (min.0.72–max.40.79 mg/g), Apigenin (min.1.07–max.17.35 mg/g), Pinocembrin (min.1.32–max.39.92 mg/g] and 6 phenolic acid [Caffeic acid (min.1.20–max.7.6 mg/g), p-Coumaric acid (min.1.26–max.4.47 mg/g), trans-Ferulic acid (min.1.28–max.4.92 mg/g), Protocatechuic acid (1.78 mg/g), trans-Cinnamic acid (min.1.05–max.3.83 mg/g), Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) (min.1.41–max.30.15 mg/g)] components were detected as mg/g, in different ratios in propolis samples collected from different regions. The feature of this study, so far, is to have the maximum number of samples representing the Turkish propolis, and so is thought to help to national and international propolis standard workings.

Gendered jobs and occupational prestige in Turkey: Women in the hierarchy elevator

        Aslı Ermiş-Mert 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2017 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.23 No.4

The success of women in traditionally male disciplines of higher education is not correspondingly reflected in their employment in high-prestige male-dominated jobs in Turkey and this paper seeks to understand the individual level factors that have influenced women’s limited presence in these, particularly in relation to their household- and family-related responsibilities from the 1980s to the 2000s and with reference to current patterns. The term “hierarchy elevator” is introduced to describe and elaborate how horizontal gender segregation intersects with vertical gender segregation as both create disadvantages for women in the job market, considering that their representation is limited in traditionally male jobs and prestigious jobs. Using ordered logistic regressions, this paper demonstrates that being highly educated reinforces women’s career trajectories in high-prestige male-dominated jobs in Turkey, while married women are largely excluded from these. Those who have one child compared to none are more likely to attain these jobs, while having two or more children impedes their labor market outcomes in these positions. This finding can be associated with the expanded financial resources of the few women who work in high-prestige male-dominated jobs for being able to afford childcare, and who may also prefer to have just one child each in order to maintain their status in these demanding jobs.

Effect of Acupressure on Primary Dysmenorrhea: Review of Experimental Studies

Aslı Karakuş Selçuk,Emre Yanikkerem 사단법인약침학회 2021 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.14 No.2

Primary dysmenorrhea is defined as cramping pain in the lower abdomen with no pelvic diseases, and it has a high prevalence in many countries. Acupressure is a widely used complementary treatment method for primary dysmenorrhea. This review examined experimental studies to determine the effects of acupressure on primary dysmenorrhea using the databases PubMed, Google Scholar, and CINAHL with the keywords “Acupressure” and “Dysmenorrhea”. There were 2227 records in the databases, and 330 articles were published between 1989 and March 2020. Experimental studies in the English language were reviewed according to the PRISMA guidelines. This review included 28 published studies that were assessed using the Jadad score for quality. The studies were categorized as studies of acupressure at the LR3 point (n = 4), at the SP6 point (n = 9), at auricular points (n = 5), at multiple points (n = 8), and with devices (n = 2). Moreover, studies of self-acupressure (n = 9) were identified. The studies demonstrated that acupressure could reduce menstrual symptoms, the severity and duration of menstrual pain, distress, and anxiety. Furthermore, it helped improve the quality of life and well-being of patients and provide psychological support and self-care. Acupressure is an inexpensive, easy-to-apply, and non-pharmacological treatment and is useful for reducing primary dysmenorrhea, and women can apply this method anywhere by themselves. However, high-quality randomized controlled trials with larger samples are necessary to establish the evidence for acupressure as an effective intervention.

Arterial Stiffness in Patients with Bipolar Disorder

        Aslı Kazgan Kılıçaslan,Burcu Sırlıer Emir,Sevler Yildiz,Gülhan Kılıçaslan,Osman Kurt 대한정신약물학회 2023 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.21 No.3

Objective: Bipolar disorder (BD) is an inflammatory and metabolic disease. The disease and the drugs used to treat it may affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The aim of this study is to investigate arterial stiffness in patients with BD and compare them with healthy controls. Methods: Thirty-nine patients with BD type I in remission and 39 healthy control subjects were included in the study. Carotid and femoral artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and arterial thickness parameters were measured by Doppler ultrasonography. Results: The elastic modulus value of the carotid artery was significantly higher in the patients than in the control group (p = 0.015). Although the IMT of both carotid and femoral artery was thicker in patients than in healthy control subjects, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.105; p = 0.391). There was a significant positive correlation between chlorpromazine equivalent dose and femoral elastic modulus value (p = 0.021, r = 0.539). There was a positive correlation between lithium equivalent dose and carotid compliance; a significant negative correlation between lithium equivalent dose and carotid elastic modulus was also determined (both p = 0.007, r = 0.466; p = 0.027, r = −0.391, respectively). No predictor was observed between drug dose and arterial stiffness parameters. Conclusion: Arterial stiffness might be investigated for its potential to reduce CVD risk in patients with BD. Given the established CVD complications in this patient population, further studies are needed to determine whether the results are specific to antipsychotic treatment or BD and to clarify the potential arterial protective effects of mood stabilizers.

Electrografting and Surface Properties of Some Substituted Nitrophenols on Glassy Carbon Electrode and Simultaneous Pb2+ - Cd2+ Analysis via Assist of Graphene Oxide Terminated Surface

        Erkal, Aslı,Erdoğ,an, Mehmet Selç,uk,,ık, İ,hsan,Ekş,i, Haslet,Jeon, Seungwon,Solak, Ali Osman,Ü,stü,ndağ,, Zafer The Electrochemical Society 2014 Journal of the Electrochemical Society Vol.161 No.10

<P>A new electrode was prepared by the electrooxidation of orto-, meta-, and para-substituted nitro phenols on glassy carbon electrode. Electrochemical modification of the electrodes was carried out in 0.01 M HCl using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Then nitro groups in the covalently grafted nitro phenol derivatives on GC electrode were reduced to amine groups in 0.01 M HCl. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrodes was studied in the presence of electroactive redox probes such as ferrocene and ferricyanide by CV and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to characterize the surface structure and composition of the modified substrates. Thickness of the films was measured by using an ellipsometer. Surface topography of the nanofilms and bare GC was characterized via AFM. Graphene oxide (GO) was covalently attached on 4-aminophenyl involved surface through EDC. Simple immersing of the GO covered nanoplatform into a sample solution led to the chemical deposition by means of the interaction with Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions, simultaneously. Various analysis parameters that affect the simultaneous analysis of the ions such as deposition time, pH factor and deposition temperature, were optimized. Calibration curve for the GO grafted electrode surface with Square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) were obtained in the concentration range between 1 × 10−8 M and 1 × 10−12 M for Pb2+ and Cd2+. The detection limits of the modified electrode for Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions were determined to be about 3.2 (± 0.1) × 10−13 M and 2.4 (± 0.2) × 10−13 M, respectively.</P>
