        Survey and population dynamics of cereal aphids and their common natural enemies inhabiting wheat crop in Hail region, Saudi Arabia

        Cereal aphids are known as serious pests that cause considerable yield losses of wheat production. In this study, cereal aphids and their common natural enemies inhabiting the commercial wheat crop were investigated between February and April 2013 as a preliminary study in the Hail region, northern Saudi Arabia. Results showed that wheat crops were infested by four aphid species including the Russian wheat aphid Diuraphis noxia Kurdjumov, the English grain aphid Sitobion avenae Fabricius, the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi L. and the greenbug aphid Schizaphis graminum Rondani (Homoptera: Aphididae). The Russian wheat aphid D. noxia, however, was the most abundant species compared to other aphid species, totaling 343 individuals which represented 39.80% of all cereal aphids. The results showed a diverse community of specialist natural enemies that were associated aphids including parasitoid wasps as a complex and one Braconid species Aphidius matricariae Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), three coccinellid species (Adonia variegate Goeze, Coccinella quinquepunctata L. and Coccinella septimpunctata L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), one species of lacewing Chrysopa sp. (adults & larvae) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) and one species of hoverfly Eristalinus aeneus Scop. (adults and larvae) (Diptera: Syrphidae). This study, also, recorded a high abundance of polyphagous predators that included two species of ground beetles involving the black beetle Calosoma olivieri Dejean and Calosoma imbricatum Klug (Coleoptera: Carabidae), and spiders (Araneae) as generalist natural enemies of cereal aphids. In this article, population dynamics of captured cereal aphids and their common natural enemies, and their correlations will be described and discussed.

      • Multimodal Interaction Framework for Collaborative Augmented Reality in Education

        One of the most important technologies today is augmented reality technology, it allows users to experience the real world using virtual objects that are combined with the real world. This technology is interesting and has become applied in many sectors such as the shopping and medicine, also it has been included in the sector of education. In the field of education, AR technology has become widely used due to its effectiveness. It has many benefits, such as arousing students' interest in learning imaginative concepts that are difficult to understand. On the other hand, studies have proven that collaborative between students increases learning opportunities by exchanging information, and this is known as Collaborative Learning. The use of multimodal creates a distinctive and interesting experience, especially for students, as it increases the interaction of users with the technologies. The research aims at developing collaborative framework for developing achievement of 6th graders through designing a framework that integrated a collaborative framework with a multimodal input "hand-gesture and touch", considering the development of an effective, fun and easy to use framework with a multimodal interaction in AR technology that was applied to reformulate the genetics and traits lesson from the science textbook for the 6th grade, the first semester, the second lesson, in an interactive manner by creating a video based on the science teachers' consultations and a puzzle game in which the game images were inserted. As well, the framework adopted the cooperative between students to solve the questions. The finding showed a significant difference between post-test and pre-test of the experimental group on the mean scores of the science course at the level of remembering, understanding, and applying. Which indicates the success of the framework, in addition to the fact that 43 students preferred to use the framework over traditional education.

        Synthesis and Absorption Spectral Properties of Bis-methine Dyes Exemplified by 2,5-Bis-arylidene-1-dicyanomethylene-cyclopentanes

        A range of methine dyes has been synthesized by condensation of highly electronegative active methylene compound dicyanomethylenecyclopentane derived from cyclopentanone with the formyl group of substituted benzaldehydes. The electronic absorption spectroscopic properties of the dyes were investigated. In general, substituents on the aromatic aldehyde moiety have a significant effect on the visible absorption maxima of the dyes; increasing the solvent polarity also showed a pronounced effect on the absorption maxima.

        Synthesis, Characterization, Absorbance, Fluorescence and Non Linear Optical Properties of Some Donor Acceptor Chromophores

        Three carbazole chromophores featuring dicyano, cyano, ethyl acetate and dimethyl acetate groups as an acceptor moiety with a ${\pi}$-conjugated spacer and $N$-methyl dibenzo[$b$]pyrole as donor were synthesized by Knovenagel condensation and characterized by IR, $^1HNMR$, $^{13}CNMR$, UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemistry and theoretical B3LYP/6-$311G^*$ level whilst NLO properties and spectroscopic quantities were calculated. Calculations showed remarkable trend with HOMO located on the donor moiety and LUMO on the acceptors dicyano methylene, cyano, ethyl acetate methylene and dimethyl acetate methylene. In agreement with the calculations, solvatochromic, behavior intramolecular charge transfer band was observed in the visible region.

        Elasto-viscoplastic modeling of the consolidation of Sri Lankan peaty clay

        The consolidation behavior of Sri Lankan peaty clay is analyzed using an elasto-viscoplastic model. The model can describe the secondary compression behavior as a continuous process and it can also account for the effect of structural degradation on the consolidation analysis. The analysis takes into account all the main features involved in the process of peat consolidation, namely, finite strain, variable permeability, and the secondary compression. The material parameters required for the analysis and the procedures to evaluate them, using both standard laboratory and field tests, are explained. Initially, the model performance is assessed by comparing the predicted and the observed peat consolidation behavior under laboratory conditions. The results indicate that the model is capable of predicting the observed creep settlements and the effect of layer thickness on the settlement analysis of peaty clay. Then, the model is applied to predict the consolidation behavior of peaty clay under different field conditions. In this context, firstly, the one-dimensional field consolidation of peaty clay, brought about by the construction of compacted earth fill, is predicted. Then, the two-dimensional peat foundation response upon embankment loading is simulated. A good agreement is seen in the comparison of the predicted results with the field observations.

        Validation of the Sinhala Version of Tinnitus Handicap Inventory

        Background and Objectives: Tinnitus is a common and disabling condition that largely remains undertreated in Sri Lanka. Currently, standardized tools that assess and monitor the treatment of tinnitus or the distress it causes are unavailable in either of the two main vernacular languages prevalent in Sri Lanka. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) is used internationally to measure tinnitus-induced distress and to monitor treatment efficacy. In this study, we validated the Sinhala version of the THI (THI-Sin).Subjects and Methods: The THI was translated into Sinhala and back translated into English and finalized by independent translators. The THI-Sin questionnaire and the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Visual Analog Scale of tinnitus annoyance (VAS) were administered to 122 adults who visited the otolaryngology clinic of Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama, Sri LankaResults: THI-Sin scores showed satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach’s α=0.902) and were significantly correlated with the GHQ-12 and VAS scores. Factor analysis of the THI-Sin confirmed a three-factorial structure, which did not correspond to the original THI subscales.Conclusions: We observed significant reliability and validity of the THI-Sin tool for evaluation of tinnitus-induced handicaps among the Sinhalese-speaking population of Sri Lanka.

        Damped dynamic responses of a layered functionally graded thick beam under a pulse load

        This article aims to illustrate the damped dynamic responses of layered functionally graded (FG) thick 2D beam under dynamic pulse sinusoidal load by using finite element method, for the first time. To investigate the response of thick beam accurately, two-dimensional plane stress problem is assumed to describe the constitutive behavior of thick beam structure. The material is distributed gradually through the thickness of each layer by generalized power law function. The Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic constitutive model is exploited to include the material internal damping effect. The governing equations are obtained by using Lagrange’s equations and solved by using finite element method with twelve –node 2D plane element. The dynamic equation of motion is solved numerically by Newmark implicit time integration procedure. Numerical studies are presented to illustrate stacking sequence and material gradation index on the displacement-time response of cantilever beam structure. It is found that, the number of waves increases by increasing the graduation distribution parameter. The presented mathematical model is useful in analysis and design of nuclear, marine, vehicle and aerospace structures those manufactured from functionally graded materials (FGM).

        Sensitive and selective heavy metal ion, Mn2+ sensor development based on the synthesized (E)-N′-chlorobenzylidene-benzenesulfonohydrazide (CBBSH) molecules modified with nafion matrix

        A set of (E)-N′-chlorobenzylidene-benzenesulfonohydrazide (CBBSH) molecules were synthesized using a condensation method from the derivatives of chlorobenzaldehyde and benzenesulfonylhydrazine in a medium yield which crystallized in EtOH. CBBSH derivatives were characterized using highly refined spectroscopic techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, FESEM, and UV–Vis. Structure of the CBBSH compounds was confirmed using a single crystal X-ray diffraction technique (SCXRDT) and applied for the potential detection of selective heavy metal ion (HMI), manganese ion (Mn2+) by using reliable electrochemical method. A small layer of CBBSH was deposited onto a smooth GCE with coating binder in order to modify a sensitive and selective Mn2+ sensor. Analytical parameters such as sensitivity, LOD, LOQ of the modified sensor (3-CBBSH/GCE) toward Mn2+ were calculated from the calibration curve (CC) as 1270.0 pA μM−1 cm−2, ≈10.0 pM, and 335.0 mM respectively. This prospective 3-CBBSH/GCE sensor used to the selective measurement of Mn2+ in spiked real samples for example industrial effluent and various water samples (red sea, surface, and tap), and found acceptable and rational results.

        Ginsenoside Rb1함유 필름의 구강 내 창상 회복 촉진 효과

        This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two ginsenoside Rb1 (G-Rb1) loaded films on oral wound healing. Two types of G-Rb1 films, G-Rb1 loaded carboxymethyl cellulose (GCMC) film and G-Rb1 loaded hyaluronic acid (GHA) film, were developed. A total of 36 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups: control, GCMC, and GHA. After wound formation on midpalate, the control group was left without treatment, whereas the experimental groups had films attached. The specimen was analyzed clinically and histologically after 7 and 21 days. For clinical analysis, the area of incompletely re-epithelialized wound was measured. For histological analysis, the distance between the margins of the wound (soft tissue gap) was measured and the percentage of the collagen-stained area on the specimen was calculated. In clinical and soft tissue gap analysis, the GCMC group presented improved healing compared to the GHA group and the control at day 7 (p < 0.05). And, both GCMC (9.74 ± 10.12%) and GHA groups (19.50 ± 14.47%) presented greater collagen-positive pixels compared to control (0.89 ± 1.60%) at day 7 (p < 0.05). However, there were no differences in these parameters among the groups on day 21. Therefore, G-Rb1 loaded films improved oral wound healing. 이 연구의 목적은 Ginsenoside Rb1이 함유된 2가지 원형 필름의 구강 내 창상 치유에 대한 효과를 평가하는 것이다. 총 36마리의 백서를 각각 대조군, GCMC군, GHA군의 세 가지 군으로 나누어 연구를 진행하였다. 실험 동물의 정중구개부에 창상을 형성한 후, 대조군은 개방 창상으로 남겨두고, 실험군에는 각각의 필름을 적용하였다. 시편은 7일차와 21일차에 임상적, 조직학적 분석을 시행하였다. 임상적 분석을 위하여 재상피화가 일어나지 않은 창상의 면적을 계산하였고, 조직학적 분석을 위하여 스캔된 조직 표본 상에서 창상의 변연 사이 거리(Soft tissue gap)와 Collagen이 염색된 면적의 백분율을 측정하였다. 7일 희생군의 임상적 분석과 조직학적 분석 중 창상의 변연 사이 거리 모두에서 GCMC 군이 대조군과 GHA 군에 비해 높은 치유율을 보였다(p < 0.05). 7일 희생군의 GCMC 군과 GHA 군 모두에서 대조군에 비해 콜라겐 합성이 많이 발생하였다(p < 0.05). 하지만, 21일 희생군에서는 각 군간에 임상적 및 조직학적 분석 모두에서 유의미한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 이 연구를 통해 Ginsenoside Rb1 함유 필름이 구강 내 창상 치유를 향상시킴을 확인하였다.
