        Silver Thiosulphate in Relation to Vase Life of Narcissus Cut Flowers (Narcissus jonquilla)

        Narcissus is one of the cut flowers which postharvest problems cause loss of quality and shorter vase life. In this research, silver thiosulphate (STS) was used for improving quality and vase life of cut flowers. The flowers were harvested at the goose neck stage and pulsed in the different concentrations of STS (control treated with distilled water, 0.2, and 0.4 mM) for 24 hours. Results showed that the 0.2 mM STS was the best treatment and increased vase life of narcissus cut flowers to 10 days. After the short period of treatment, concentration of 0.4 mM STS caused severe burning of the tepals and was toxic. The 0.4 mM treatment slightly reduced the rate of senescence of flowers. Also, results showed that there was positive relationship between the fresh weight and water uptake with longevity of narcissus cut flower.

        Conus Medullaris Levels on Ultrasonography in Term Newborns : Normal Levels and Dermatological Findings

        Objective : Ultrasonography (US) is the most non-invasive, safe, and, especially in the period of infancy, best method for visualizing and examining the spinal cord. Furthermore, US is the primary work-up for development of the spinal canal, and for follow-up on issues relating to subcutaneous tissues, bone development, and the spinal cord. Conus medullaris terminates at the second lumbar vertebra, according to a consensus in the literature. Methods : Healthy children under the age of 6 months who were admitted to the radiology clinic for routine USG follow-ups between the dates of March 2012 to December 2014 were included in this study. Results : Our study includes data from 1125 lumbosacral ultrasounds. The terminal point of the conus level of the attended infants, superior, middle part, inferior of the vertebrae L1, L2, and L3. Furthermore, the termination of the discal distance ratio did not differ significantly between genders. Conclusion : Therefore, according to our results, gender is not an influencing factor in the termination of the spinal cord. Based on the study we performed, as well as the previous literature, in infants without a recognized spinal pathology, the spinal cord is detected below the vertebra L3.

        Intraorbital Encephalocele Presenting with Exophthalmos and Orbital Dystopia : CT and MRI Findings

        A 15-year-old female patient with progressive pulsatile exophthalmos caused by intraorbital encephalocele was evaluated with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in our clinic. She had no history of trauma or reconstructive surgery. When she was a little girl, she had undergone surgery for congenital glaucoma on the right eye. On the three-dimensional image of CT, a hypoplasic bone defect was observed in the greater wing of the right sphenoid bone. MRI and CT scan showed herniation through this defect of the arachnoid membrane and protruded cerebral tissue into the right orbita. Intraorbital encephalocele is an important entity that can cause pulsatile exophthalmos and blindness.

        In this paper, we give some definitions of S^∗-metric spaces and we prove a common fixed point theorem for four mappings under the condition of weakly compatible mappings in complete S^∗-metric spaces. We get some improved versions of several fixed point theorems in complete S^∗-metric spaces.

        A Tethered Cord with Hemivertebra: A Case Report and Review of Literature

        Spinal dysraphisms are defined as open and closed dysraphisms. A hemivertebra is a congenital condition seen in 61% of patients with congenital anomalies. The first report of the excision of a hemivertebra was by Royle in 1928. A sixteenyear-old girl was admitted to our clinic with a congenital stain on the waist and a normal neurological examination. No new cases have been reported in recent literature. Our case, which is also rare, is associated with a tethered cord only and no other congenital abnormalities.

        Optimization of the Double Reduced Beam Section (DRBS) Connection

        The double reduced beam section (DRBS) connection is a newly developed steel moment connection. In this paper, the chaotic particle swarm optimization technique was utilized to optimize this connection for the best seismic performance. The resulting optimum DRBS connection shapes showed up to 39% better energy dissipation and up to respectively 50% and 55% lower rupture index ( RI ) and equivalent plastic strain ( PEEQ ) at the beam-column interface, compared to the conventional RBS connection. Also, the optimum design parameters determined in this paper led to up to a 28% increase in the objective function (energy dissipation) and up to respectively 36% and 38% decreases in the RI and PEEQ with respect to the original DRBS connection, indicating noticeable seismic performance enhancements. The results indicated that changing the size of the beam and column sections does not lead to any signifi cant change in the optimal shape of the beam fl ange cut or the seismic performance of the connection.

        Chaotic particle swarm optimization in optimal active control of shear buildings

        The applications of active control is being more popular nowadays. Several control algorithms have been developed to determine optimum control force. In this paper, a Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization (CPSO) technique, based on Logistic map, is used to compute the optimum control force of active tendon system. A chaotic exploration is used to search the solution space for optimum control force. The response control of Multi-Degree of Freedom (MDOF) shear buildings, equipped with active tendons, is introduced as an optimization problem, based on Instantaneous Optimal Active Control algorithm. Three MDOFs are simulated in this paper. Two examples out of three, which have been previously controlled using Lattice type Probabilistic Neural Network (LPNN) and Block Pulse Functions (BPFs), are taken from prior works in order to compare the efficiency of the current method. In the present study, a maximum allowable value of control force is added to the original problem. Later, a twenty-story shear building, as the third and more realistic example, is considered and controlled. Besides, the required Central Processing Unit (CPU) time of CPSO control algorithm is investigated. Although the CPU time of LPNN and BPFs methods of prior works is not available, the results show that a full state measurement is necessary, especially when there are more than three control devices. The results show that CPSO algorithm has a good performance, especially in the presence of the cut-off limit of tendon force; therefore, can widely be used in the field of optimum active control of actual buildings.

        A new hybrid optimization algorithm based on path projection

        In this article, a new method is introduced to improve the local search capability of meta-heuristic algorithms using the projection of the path on the border of constraints. In a mathematical point of view, the Gradient Projection Method is applied through a new approach, while the imposed limitations are removed. Accordingly, the gradient vector is replaced with a new meta-heuristic based vector. Besides, the active constraint identification algorithm, and the projection method are changed into less complex approaches. As a result, if a constraint is violated by an agent, a new path will be suggested to correct the direction of the agent's movement. The presented procedure includes three main steps: (1) the identification of the active constraint, (2) the neighboring point determination, and (3) the new direction and step length. Moreover, this method can be applied to some meta-heuristic algorithms. It increases the chance of convergence in the final phase of the search process, especially when the number of the violations of the constraints increases. The method is applied jointly with the authors' newly developed meta-heuristic algorithm, entitled Star Graph. The capability of the resulted hybrid method is examined using the optimal design of truss and frame structures. Eventually, the comparison of the results with other meta-heuristics of the literature shows that the hybrid method is successful in the global as well as local search.

        Partial S-­metric Spaces and Fixed Point Results

        1-MCP Improves the Postharvest Quality of Cut Spray Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) ‘Optima’ Flowers

        The aim of the present work was to study the role of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on vase life and other postharvest qualities of cut spray carnation flowers. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized factorial design composed of two factors: 1-MCP concentration at four levels (0, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 g・m-3) and a period of treatment at 2 levels (3 and 6 hours) with four replications. According to the analysis of variance, time duration, 1-MCP concentration and their interaction had significant effects on the vase life, ethylene production,anthocyanin concentration, and weight loss of cut flowers (P ≥ 0.01). The treatment for 6 hours was better than 3hours in all concentrations of 1-MCP. The longest vase life (16.25 days) was obtained when 0.6 g・m-3 1-MCP was used for 6 hours. Ethylene production by freshly cut flowers in the treatment of 0.6 g・m-3 1-MCP for 6 hours was negligible as compared with the control. Applying 1-MCP at any dose significantly minimized the % weight loss as compared to the control on days 5 and 8. Interaction between 1-MCP concentrations and a period of treatment on chlorophyll content was not significant.
