<P>The adverse effects of nanoscale-alumina (Al2O3-NPs) have been previously demonstrated in both<I>in vitro</I>and<I>in vivo</I>studies, whereas little is known about their mechanism of neurotoxicity. It is the goal of this research to determine the toxic effects of nano-alumina on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y and mouse hippocampal HT22 cells<I>in vitro</I>and on ICR female mice<I>in vivo</I>. Nano-alumina displayed toxic effects on SH-SY5Y cell lines in three different concentrations also increased aluminium abundance and induced oxidative stress in HT22 cells. Nano-alumina peripherally administered to ICR female mice for three weeks increased brain aluminium and ROS production, disturbing brain energy homeostasis, and led to the impairment of hippocampus-dependent memory. Most importantly, these nano-particles induced Alzheimer disease (AD) neuropathology by enhancing the amyloidogenic pathway of Amyloid Beta (Aβ) production, aggregation and implied the progression of neurodegeneration in the cortex and hippocampus of these mice. In conclusion, these data demonstrate that nano-alumina is toxic to both cells and female mice and that prolonged exposure may heighten the chances of developing a neurodegenerative disease, such as AD.</P>

The main functions of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in the kidney distal nephron are mediation of sodium and water balance and stabilization of blood pressure. Estrogen has important effects on sodium and water balance and on premenopausal blood pressure, but its role in the regulation of ENaC function is not fully understood. Female Sprague–Dawley rats were treated with 17β-estradiol for 6 weeks following bilateral ovariectomy. Plasma estrogen, aldosterone, creatinine, and electrolytes were analyzed, and α-ENaC and derlin-1 protein expression in the kidney was determined by immunohistochemistry and western blotting. The expression levels of α-ENaC, derlin-1, AMPK, and related molecules were also examined by western blotting and real-time PCR in cultured mouse renal collecting duct (mpkCCDc14) epithelial cells following estrogen treatment. Immunofluorescence and coimmunoprecipitation were performed to detect α-ENaC binding with derlin-1 and α-ENaC ubiquitination. The results demonstrated that the loss of estrogen elevated systolic blood pressure in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. OVX rat kidneys showed increased α-ENaC expression but decreased derlin-1 expression. In contrast, estrogen treatment decreased α-ENaC expression but increased derlin-1 expression in mpkCCDc14 cells. Moreover, estrogen induced α-ENaC ubiquitination by promoting the interaction of α-ENaC with derlin-1 and evoked phosphorylation of AMPK in mpkCCDc14 cells. Our study indicates that estrogen reduces ENaC expression and blood pressure in OVX rats through derlin-1 upregulation and AMPK activation.

Increased demand for energy worldwide has resulted in increasing interest in alternative renewable sources of biofuels. Demand for improved systems of bioenergy generation, environmental remediation, and coproduction of high value bioactive compounds has led to the potential use of algae in biomass utilization. In Malaysia, palm oil industries generate high amount of solid wastes. Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is estimated to be three times of the amount of crude palm oil produced. POME is a heavily polluting wastewater due to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD), high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and high contents of minerals such as nitrogen and phosphorus that can cause severe pollution to the environment and water resources. A combination of wastewater treatment and renewable bioenergy co-generation with recovery of high-value biochemicals would benefit the palm oil industry.

The expansion of a country's ecological footprint generates resources for economic development. China's import bill and carbon footprint can be reduced by investing in green transportation and energy technologies. A sustainable environment depends on the cessation of climate change; the current study investigates nuclear energy efficiency, economic complexity, air transportation, and industrial improvement for reducing environmental footprint. Using data spanning the years 1983e2016, the dynamic autoregressive distributed lag simulation method has demonstrated the short- and long-term variability in the impact of regressors on the ecological footprint. The study findings revealed that economic complexity in China had been found to have a statistically significant impact on the country's ecological footprint. Moreover, the industrial improvement process is helpful for the ecological footprint in China. In the short term, air travel has a negative impact on the ecological footprint, but this effect diminishes over time. Additionally, energy innovation is negative and substantial both in the short and long run, thus demonstrating its positive role in reducing the ecological footprint. Policy implications can be extracted from a wide range of issues, including economic complexity, industrial improvement, air transportation, energy innovation, and ecological impact to achieve sustainable goals.
