Alveolar Bone Protective and Hypoglycemic Effects of Systemic Propolis Treatment in Experimental Periodontitis and Diabetes Mellitus

        Cu¨neyt Asım Aral,Servet Kesim,Henry Greenwell,Mehmet Kara,Aysun Cxetin,Birkan Yakan 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.2

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the anti-inflammatory effects of propolis on the systemic and local effects on experimental periodontitis and diabetes. Fifty-six Wistar rats were divided into seven groups: (1) negativecontrol (NC), (2) periodontitis (P), (3) diabetes (D), (4) diabetes + periodontitis (DP), (5) periodontitis + propolis (P-Pro), (6) diabetes + propolis (D-Pro), and (7) diabetes + periodontitis + propolis (DP-Pro). Periodontitis was induced by ligature placement and diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection. Propolis (Pro) was administrated by oral gavage (100 mg/kg/day). On day 21, plasma was obtained for analysis and alveolar bone level was evaluated using histomorphometric analysis. Compared to NC the final blood glucose levels for D-Pro was not significantly different (P = .052), however, D, DP, and DPPro were significantly different. There were no statistically significant differences in blood glucose concentrations between P and P-Pro, between D and D-Pro, and between DP and DP-Pro. All groups showed significantly more alveolar bone loss compared with NC. A significant difference in bone loss was found between P and P-Pro, and DP and DP-Pro, however there was no difference between D and D-Pro. Plasma interleukin 1beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) levels were not significantly different among groups. In conclusion, propolis reduced fasting blood glucose levels in diabetes. In addition, propolis might be beneficial as an adjunct treatment of diabetes associated periodontitis and periodontitis without diabetes.

      • The effect of the new stopping criterion on the genetic algorithm performance

Mustafa Kaya,Asım Genc 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2021 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.27 No.1

In this study, a new stopping criterion, called “backward controlled stopping criterion” (BCSC), was proposed to be used in Genetic Algorithms. In the study, the available stopping citeria; adaptive stopping citerion, evolution time, fitness threshold, fitness convergence, population convergence, gene convergence, and developed stopping criterion were applied to the following four comparison problems; high strength concrete mix design, pre-stressed precast concrete beam, travelling salesman and reinforced concrete deep beam problems. When completed the analysis, the developed stopping criterion was found to be more accomplished than available criteria, and was able to research a much larger area in the space design supplying higher fitness values.

      • Poster Session : PS 0601 ; Pulmonology ; Pulmonary Nodules Due to Brucellosis

( Seyit Ahmet Ay ),( Yusuf Hancerli ),( Suna Secil Ozturk Deniz ),( Mustafa Hatipoglu ),( Asım Ulcay ),( Muzaffer Saglam ),( Veysel Ozalper ),( Ferhat Deniz ),( Arif Yonem ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Objective: Brucellosis is a characterized zoonotic disease by multisystem involvement. Although musculoskeletal involvement is the most frequent case, the pulmonary system is rarely involved. Nodular involment is one of the rarest amoung pulmonary involvements. This study presents a 21- year-old-male with pulmonary involvement without any musculoskeletal system involvement and he was received a diagnosis in the early days of hospitalization. Case: The patient had complaints of one -month-long cough and sputum production and he informed that he used different antibiotics. After the last center he went detected hypogonadism in the patient, he was referred to our hospital`s endocrinology clinic. Physical examination showed fever:37.2,nb:112 beats/min and fi ndings in accordance with the hypogonadism and also late inspiratory crackles had been heard by oscultation. The captured chest radiograph indicated suspicious nodular appearance and suspected infi ltrated area. The laboratory tests erythrocyte sedimentation rate:41mm/saat,C-Reactive Protein:14.1,WBC : 4.08 x103/ul. The patient stated that he was working as a village shephard 1 month ago who did not suffer from signifi - cant weight loss nor fever. Detailed medical history stated that the last examination indicated brucella rosebengal positive, and the antiglobulin (coombs) test in brucellosis 1/160 was also positive. Altough the sputum culture and tuberculosis acid fast stain were negative, the patient had a positive blood culture regarding brucella melitensis. The thorax CT image showed nodules in the lungs with the ground glass opacity and infi ltrative image has been detected in subpleural area. There was nothing in bones scintigraphy. The patient was treated rifampicin 1x600 mg and doxycycline 2x100 mg for 6 weeks. Along with the treatment the patient`s complaints disappeared, and post-treatment blood cultures was negative. Control thorax CT reveals disappearanceof lesions in the lung area. Conclusion: Anamnesis and disease suspicion are the most important things regarding diagnosis of Brucellosis.

Hydrogen Peroxide Extends Postharvest Life of Ctenanthe setosa Leaf Cuts under Osmotic Stress by Reducing Leaf Rolling

        Aykut Saglam,Ebru Kalaycioglu,Funda Gul Guven,Neslihan Saruhan,Asım Kadioglu,Mehmet Demiralay 한국원예학회 2014 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.55 No.4

Reducing effects of exogenous hydrogen peroxide on leaf rolling in detached leaves of Ctenanthe setosawere studied. The leaves were kept in H2O2 solutions ranging from 0 to 1 mM for 48 h and then, osmotic stresswas applied for 4 h by polyethylene glycol (PEG). Degree of leaf rolling, loss of leaf water, and malondialdehyde(MDA) content were reduced by 0.2 mM H2O2. Antioxidant enzymes were induced by 0.2 mM H2O2. EndogenousH2O2 content was increased after the 0.5 and 1 mM H2O2 treatments but was decreased after 0.2 mM H2O2 treatment. Proline was decreased after exogenous H2O2 applications. Total soluble sugar content was increased as compared tothe control after 0.2 mM H2O2 treatment. In conclusion, low-dose exogenous H2O2 treatment could delay leaf rollingby inducing tolerance to osmotic stress due to modulation of the antioxidant system, soluble sugar accumulation, andmaintenance of leaf hydration. Therefore, postharvest life of C. setosa cut foliage could be extended by 0.2 mMH2O2 treatments.
