      • Lack of any Association between Blood Groups and Lung Cancer, Independent of Histology

Oguz, Arzu,Unal, Dilek,Tasdemir, Arzu,Karahan, Samet,Aykas, Fatma,Mutlu, Hasan,Cihan, Yasemin Benderli,Kanbay, Mehmet Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.1

Introduction: Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths, is divided into 2 main classes based on its biology, therapy and prognosis: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Many cases are at an advanced stage at diagnosis, which is a major obstacle to improving outcomes. It is important to define the high risk group patients for early diagnosis and chance of cure. Blood group antigens are chemical components on erythrocyte membranes but they are also expressed on a variety of epithelial cells. Links between ABO blood groups with benign or malignant diseases, such as gastric and pancreas cancers, have been observed for a long time. In this study, we aimed to investigate any possible relationship between lung cancer histological subtypes and ABO-Rh blood groups. Materials and Methods: The files of 307 pathologically confirmed lung cancer patients were reviewed retrospectively. Cases with a serologically determined blood group and Rh factor were included and those with a history of another primary cancer were excluded, leaving a total of 221. The distribution of blood groups of the lung cancer patients were compared with the distribution of blood groups of healthy donors admitted to the Turkish Red Crescent Blood Service in our city in the year 2012. Results: There was no significant difference between patients with lung cancer of either type and the control group in terms of distribution of ABO blood groups and Rh factor (p: 0.073). There was also no relationship with non small cell cancer histological subtypes. Conclusions: In this study, we found no relationship between the ABO-Rhesus blood groups and NSCLC and SCLC groups. To our knowledge this is the first analysis of ABO blood groups in SCLC patients.

A CERTAIN SUBCLASS OF MEROMORPHIC FUNCTIONS WITH POSITIVE COEFFICIENTS ASSOCIATED WITH AN INTEGRAL OPERATOR

        ( Arzu Akgul ) 호남수학회 2017 호남수학학술지 Vol.39 No.3

The aim of the present paper is to introduce a new subclass of meromorphic functions with positive coe_cients de_ned by a certain integral operator and a necessary and sufficient condition for a function f to be in this class. We obtain coefficient inequality, meromorphically radii of close-to-convexity, starlikeness and convexity, convex linear combinations, Hadamard product and integral transformation for the functions f in this class.

Synthesis of Poly(N-methylol Methacrylamide/Vinyl Sulfonic Acid) Hydrogels for Heavy Metal Ion Removal

Arzu Yakar 대한화학회 2014 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.35 No.10

In this study, poly(N-methylol methacrylamide) (NMMAAm) and poly(N-methylol methacrylamide/vinyl sulphonic acid) (NMMAAm-VSA) hydrogels were synthesized by 60Co-γ ray irradiation at an ambient temperature. The graphs belonging to the gelation percent- percent-dose and swelling curves were drawn by using data which were obtained from water and different pH solutions. Characterization of hydrogels was performed by FTIR and DSC-TGA analysis. Heavy metal ion (Ni2+, Co2+) removal capacities of hydrogels were investigated in aqueous solutions, which had different concentrations (100-1500 mg/L). In metal ion removal studies, pH value of aqueous medium was kept constant at 5.0. Maximum metal ion removal values were obtained for NMMAAm-VSA (1:3 mole ratio) hydrogels. Metal ion removal capacities of NMMAAm- VSA (1:3 mole ratio) hydrogels were found as 82 mg/g and 98 mg/g for Ni2+ and Co2+ ions, respectively.

ON A CLASS OF PERFECT RINGS

        ( Arzu Olgun ),( Ergül Türkmen ) 호남수학회 2020 호남수학학술지 Vol.42 No.3

A module M is called ss-semilocal if every submodule U of M has a weak supplement V in M such that U∩V is semisimple. In this paper, we provide the basic properties of ss-semilocal modules. In particular, it is proved that, for a ring R, RR is ss- semilocal if and only if every left R-module is ss-semilocal if and only if R is semilocal and Rad(R) ⊆ Soc(RR). We define projective ss-covers and prove the rings with the property that every (simple) module has a projective ss-cover are ss-semilocal.

Improvement of Pulmonary Functions Following Septoplasty: How Are Lower Airways Affected?

        Arzu Tuzuner,Gulden Bilgin,Sule Demirci,Gulbahar Darilmaz Yuce,Cemile Acikgoz,Ethem Erdal Samim 대한이비인후과학회 2016 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.9 No.1

Objectives. Nasal septal deviation is a frequent cause of increased nasal airway resistance. A narrow nasal airway would result in a decreased airflow into the lungs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the alterations of the pulmonary functions following septoplasty using spirometry and 6 minutes walking test (6mWT). And reveal the correlation of symptom score improvement with nasal obstruction symptom score (NOSE) and sino-nasal outcome test (SNOT22) questionnaires following surgery. Methods. Thirty patients with obvious nasal septal deviations were enrolled in the study. All patients had a detailed otorhinolaryngologic examination, filled NOSE/SNOT22 questionnaires, performed spirometry and 6mWT preoperatively. One month after surgery, NOSE/SNOT22 questionnaires filled by subjects and spirometry with 6mWT were performed again, and the results were compared. Results. The mean total walking distance was 702.3±68.2 m preoperatively, and it improved to 753.2±72.6 m postoperatively (P<0.001). Total tour count increased from 11 (range, 10.8 to 12.0) to 12 (range, 11 to 13.3), and the difference was found statistically significant (P<0.001). When the preoperative and postoperative mean 6mWT results were compared, diastolic blood pressure increased from 70 to 80 mmHg (P=0.031), heart rate increased from 83.5±13.2 to 90.1±12.5 bpm (P=0.017), dyspnea rate decreased from 1 to 0 (P=0.002), and fatigue scores reduced from 2 to 1 (P=0.003). Evaluation on spirometry findings revealed that FIF50% (maximum inspiratory flow at 50% of forced vital capacity [FVC]) scores and peak expiratory flow (PEF) values improved significantly after surgery. Septoplasty improves the nasal breathing pattern. While reducing FEF50% (maximum expiratory flow at 50% of FVC)/FIF50%, it increases PEF and FIF50% values. In addition, as shown by 6mWT, exercise capacity improves following surgery. Postoperative NOSE and SNOT22 scores reduced markedly compared to preoperative values (P<0.001). Conclusion. These findings suggest that nasal septal surgery has a positive effect on pulmonary functions, and this can be an important clue for the relationship of lung disorders and nasal obstruction.

        COMMUTATIVE ELLIPTIC OCTONIONS

        Arzu Surekci,Mehmet Ali G¨ung¨or 호남수학회 2022 호남수학학술지 Vol.44 No.2

In this article, the matrix representation of commutative elliptic octonions and their properties are described. Firstly, definitions and theorems are given for the commutative elliptic octonion matrices using the elliptic quaternion matrices. Then the adjoint matrix, eigenvalue and eigenvector of the commutative elliptic octonions are investigated. Finally, α = −1 for the Gershgorin Theorem is proved using eigenvalue and eigenvector of the commutative elliptic octonion matrix.

Simultaneous integer sequences and solving the Pell equation

ARZU OZKOC 장전수학회 2016 Advanced Studies in Contemporary Mathematics Vol.26 No.2

        Let k ≥ 1 be a fixed integer. In this work, we set two simultaneous integer sequences defined by Xn = (4k2 + 1)Xn-1 + (4k2 + 1)Xn-2 - Xn-3 and Yn = (4k2 + 1)Yn-1 + (4k2 + 1)Yn-2 - Yn-3 for n ≥ 3 with initial terms X0 = 1, X1 = 2k2+1, X2 = 8k4+8k2+1 and Y0 = 0, Y1 = 2k, Y2 = 8k3+4k and derived some algebraic identities on them. Further, we are able to determine all integer solutions of the Pell equation x2-(k2 +1)y2 = 1 as (xn, yn) = (Xn, Yn) for every n ≥ 1.
