Rape as a War Crime: The Position of International Law since World War II

Arpita Saha (사) 이준국제법연구원 2009 Journal of East Asia and International Law Vol.2 No.2

International attention first focused on the use of rape as a tactic of warfare in Bosnia between 1991 and 1995. Rape was also employed by Hutu troops against Tutsiwomen in the genocidal campaign in Rwanda in 1994. In December of 1993, The United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence againstWomen, and with that the international community acknowledged its global dimensions. What became clear to the world was that women’s distinctive needs, experiences, vulnerabilities, and perspectives were being excluded in the development of both the substantive and procedural rules of international humanitarian law, aswell as the remedies it offered victims. A community of elite women legal policy makers comprised of judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and investigators evolved to trythese cases in International Criminal Tribunals in Europe and Africa. During the Bosnian war of 1992-95 Yugoslav women and hundreds of other Muslim womenwere systematically raped and tortured in a clear attempt to advance the cause of ethnic cleansing. Several of the women took to court, and testified against, threeBosnian soldiers in the courtrooms of the Yugoslav war-crimes tribunal in The Hague. The ruling made on the rape cases between Yugoslav women and the BosnianSerb army is a landmark in establishing that systematic rape during conflict is not merely a violation of the practice of war but a crime against humanity. In turn, sexual assault during slavery has been recognized as an independent crime under humanitarian and human rights laws. The ruling is very significant because it opensthe door for many other victims of sexual violence to press for their recognition as victims, for penalties, and for compensation. It also means that effort willconsequently be made to promote its application. However, whether the codification of such laws can be translated into the practical protection of women during conflictremains to be seen.

        Does Oil Ownership Affect Institutions?

Arpita Asha Khanna 한국국제경제학회 2020 International Economic Journal Vol.34 No.3

A large body of literature shows that oil wealth leads to poor quality of institutions. The existing literature, however, neglects the dimension of ownership. This article provides the first empirical investigation of whether ownership of oil matters for institutional quality. Using a novel database on ownership structures, it analyzes a sample of 38 oil-rich developing countries during 1984–2005. The estimation results show that ownership matters and that private ownership of oil leads to a better quality of institutions than state ownership. The results are useful for oil-rich countries in adopting appropriate policies to maximize the benefits of oil to the nation.

Antecedents to fashion clothing involvement: role of global self-identity, cosmopolitanism, and normative influence

Arpita Khare 한국마케팅과학회 2014 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.5 No.1

This research examines the influence of cosmopolitanism, identification with globalconsumers, and consumers’ susceptibility to interpersonal influence (CSII) on Indianconsumers’ fashion clothing involvement. A survey technique was used for datacollection across seven cities in India. Both metropolitan and non-metropolitan citieswere targeted. The cosmopolitanism factor loaded under two factors: cosmopolitanismrelated to lifestyle (CRL) and cosmopolitanism related to cultural mores (CRCM). Thevalue-expressive factors of normative influence, CRL, self-identification with globalconsumers, and type of city (metropolitan or non-metropolitan) influenced Indianconsumers’ fashion clothing involvement. The fashion clothing market is growing in India, but there is limited research seekingto understand the factors influencing fashion clothing involvement. Findings on theinfluence of global lifestyle, cosmopolitanism, and normative beliefs regarding Indianconsumers’ fashion clothing involvement can be helpful to companies targeting Indianconsumers.

Dynamic analysis of laminated composite skew plates with cut-out

Arpita Mandal,Salil Haldar,Chaitali Ray 국제구조공학회 2018 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.68 No.6

The aim of the present paper deals with free vibration analysis of laminated composite skew plates with single and multiple cut-outs. For complete understanding of the dynamic behavior of laminated skew plates with cut-out a numerical analysis has been carried out by developing a computer code in FOTRAN. Special attention is drawn on the formulation of mass matrix by considering effect of rotary inertia. The results obtained by the finite element formulation using nine noded isoparametric plate bending element are validated by comparing the results from relevant published literature. Few new results on laminated skew plates with cut-out have been presented.

High Frequency Shoot Proliferation from Cotyledonary Node of Lawsonia inermis L. and Validation of their Molecular Finger Printing

        Arpita Moharana,Aradhana Das,Enketeswara Subudhi,Soumendra K. Naik,Durga P. Barik 한국작물학회 2017 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.20 No.5

An efficient and reproducible protocol for in vitro plant regeneration was developed for Lawsonia inermis L. using cotyledonary node explant derived from axenic seedlings. Highest shoot proliferation frequency (ca 96.6%) was achieved on Murashige and Skoog’s, 1962 (MS) basal medium supplemented with 8.88 μM 6-Benzyladenine (BA) + 2.68 μM Napthalene acetic acid (NAA). Up-scaling of shoots was carried out using in vitro nodes on MS medium supplemented with 4.44 μM BA. So overall, an average of 238 shoots was produced at 75 days. Of the four different forms of cotyledonary node explants evaluated, highest shoot multiplication was observed in cotyledonary node explant with two whole cotyledons. In vitro regenerated shoots were best rooted (ca 34.3 roots / shoot) on ½ MS medium devoid of any growth regulator. The plantlets were successfully acclimated in sand:soil :: 1:1and established in the garden soil. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) analysis revealed a homogeneous amplification profile for all micropropagated plants validating the genetic fidelity of the in vitro-regenerated plants and supporting the regeneration protocol for economic commercial exploitation.

Bioremediation of Binary System of Reactive Red 120 Dye and Cr(III) Using Aspergillus tamari and Statistical Validation of Response

        Arpita Ghosh,Manisha Ghosh Dastidar,T. R. Sreekrishnan,Pradipta Patra 한국대기환경학회 2019 Asian Journal of Atmospheric Environment (AJAE) Vol.13 No.4

The efficiency of Aspergillus tamarii (isolated from sludge of a textile industry) was investigated to remediate the synthetic solutions of reactive red 120 (RR120) dye and chromium(III) separately. Also, parallel studies were conducted on the bioremediation of binary system of chromium(III) and RR120 dye in different ratios. The study was conducted to find the potential of the A. tamarii for removing chromium(III) and color from solutions containing only chromium or only RR120 dye or both and the effect of RR120 and chromium on the growth of the strain were observed. Maximum dye removal 81 mg/L was observed from 100 mg/L RR120 dye solution at pH 5 up to 50 hours. Maximum chromium removal 88.3 mg/L was observed from 100 mg/L chromium (III) solution at pH 5 up to 50 hours. In previous studies, A. tamarii was used as a bioremediator for removing different chromium complex dyes. The removal of chromium(III) and color were compared from solutions of synthetic mixtures and chromium complex dyes. The response of bioremediation study was validated using multiple regression analysis.

        Arpita Rai Thakur,Krishna Burde,Kruthika Guttal,Venkatesh G. Naikmasur 대한영상치의학회 2013 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.43 No.4

Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the general anatomy and morphology of the nasopalatine canal using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to determine the human anatomic variability of the nasopalatine canal in relation to age and gender. Materials and Methods: The study included 100 subjects aged between 20 and 86 years who were divided into the following 3 groups: 1) 20-34 years old; 2) 35-49 years old; 3) ›50 years old. The subjects were equally distributed between the genders. CBCT was performed using a standard exposure and patient positioning protocol. The data of the CBCT images were sliced in three dimensions. Image planes on the three axes (X, Y, and Z) were sequentially analyzed for the location, morphology and dimensions of the nasopalatine canal by two independent observers. The correlation of age and gender with all the variables was evaluated. Results: The present study did not reveal statistically significant differences in the number of openings at the nasal fossa; diameter of the nasal fossa openings; diameter of the incisive fossa; shape, curvature, and angulation of the canal as viewed in the sagittal sections; antero-posterior dimensions and length of the canal in the sagittal sections; or the level of division of the canal in the coronal plane by age. However, males and females showed significant differences in the length of the canal in the sagittal sections and level of the division of the canal in the coronal plane. Conclusion: The present study highlighted important variability observed in the anatomy and morphology of the nasopalatine canal.

Antecedents to green apparel purchase behavior of Indian consumers

        Arpita Khare,Pradeep Kautish 한국마케팅과학회 2022 마케팅과학연구 Vol.32 No.2

The current study examines the influence of innovativeness the- ory-based consumer independent judgment making (CIJM), novelty-seeking behavior (CNS), green apparel knowledge (GAK) and green apparel perceived effectiveness (GAPE) on green appa- rel purchase behavior (GAPB) in an emerging economy, i.e., India. The covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) and a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) were employed. A mall intercept method was used for data collection across 10 cities in India. A total of 450 responses were obtained through a structured questionnaire. Results indicated that green apparel perceived effectiveness (GAPE) and green apparel knowl- edge (GAK) had a positive influence on Indian consumers’ green apparel purchase behavior (GAPB). Consumer innovativeness con- struct of consumer independent judgment making (CIJM) and novelty-seeking behavior (CNS) had no positive impact on green apparel purchase behavior (GAPB). The findings can help green apparel manufacturers, environmentalists, and marketers to focus on prominently communicating the environment-related benefits of green apparels. Green clothing benefits may be improved by incorporating new fashion, designs, fabrics, and trendy styles.
