Fabrication and characterization of bismuth oxideeholmia nanofibers and nanoceramics

        Arda Aytimur,Serhat Koçyigit,Ibrahim Uslu,Senol Durmusoglu,Ahmet Akdemir 한국물리학회 2013 Current Applied Physics Vol.13 No.3

In this article, a novel and simple method to produce both boron doped and undoped holmia stabilized bismuth oxide nanoceramic materials has been put forward. Boron doped and undoped poly (vinyl alcohol)/bismutheholmia acetate nanofibers were produced using the electrospinning technique and were calcined at 850 C afterward in order to obtain nanopowder. The characteristics of the nanofibers were investigated with FT-IR, XRD, and SEM. XRD analyses showed that boron undoped holmia stabilized bismuth oxide nanopowders have the face-centered cubic structure (d-phase), and that the incorporation of boron atoms into the composite prevents the nucleus formation and turns the structure into a more amorphous glassy form. The SEM micrographs of the fibers showed that the addition of boron results in the formation of cross-linked bright-surfaced fibers. The average fiber diameters for electrospun boron doped and undoped PVA/BieHo acetate nanofibers were calculated using the ImageJ software as 102 nm and 171 nm, respectively.

Analysis of Plant Growth and Biochemical Parameters in Amsonia orientalis after in vitro Salt Stress

        Arda Acemi,Yonca Duman,Yonca Yüzügüllü Karakuş,Yasemin Özdener Kömpe,Fazıl Özen 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.3

This study aimed to better understand the limited natural distribution of the endangered ornamental plantAmsonia orientalis Decne. by focusing on salt stress, a common limiting factor of plant growth. Plants weresubjected to in vitro salt stress at concentrations between 25 and 150 mM. In general, shoot and root lengths, rootnumber, and total protein, chlorophyll a and carotenoid content were negatively influenced at NaCl concentrationsabove 25 mM. Hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde and proline content all gradually increased with increasing saltconcentration. Activity levels of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) were all at their maximum in plants cultured in medium containing 50 mM NaCl. Compared to controlcultures, an overall upward trend in POD activity was observed with increasing salt concentration, while the activitylevels of SOD and CAT increased at lower concentrations but were limited at elevated concentrations of NaCl. These results suggest that A. orientalis prefers soils with no or very low salt but can tolerate NaCl up to aconcentration of 50 mM.

Linguistic and clinical validation of the Turkish version of Acute Cystitis Symptom Score for the diagnosis and patient-reported outcome in acute uncomplicated cystitis

        Ersan Arda,Jakhongir Alidjanov,Sinan Ates,Mete Çek,Adrian Piatz,Florian M. Wagenlehner,Kurt G. Naber 대한비뇨의학회 2023 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.64 No.3

Purpose: The Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS) was developed as a self-reporting questionnaire for diagnosing and monitoring acute uncomplicated cystitis (AC) in female patients. The study aims at the translation of the ACSS into Turkish from the original Uzbek including its linguistic, cognitive and clinical validation. Materials and Methods: After forward and backward translation of the ACSS from Uzbek to Turkish and vice versa, the cognitive assessment of the Turkish ACSS was performed on 12 female subjects to achieve the final study version. Results: The clinical validation was performed on a total of 120 female respondents including 64 Patients with AC and 56 controls without AC. For clinical diagnosis of AC, the predefined summary score of the typical symptoms of >6 showed high values (95% confidence interval) for sensitivity (0.88 [0.77–0.94]), specificity (0.98 [0.91–1.00]), and diagnostic accuracy (0.93 [0.86–0.97]). All patients were followed up between five to nine days after the baseline visit. Forty-four (68.75%) patients used antimicrobial treatment, whereas the rest (31.25%) preferred non-antimicrobial treatment. The severity scores of the typical symptoms and the quality of life were reduced significantly at follow-up. Using different (favored) thresholds for successful and non-successful treatment a clinical success rate between 54.7% and 64.1% (60.9%) was achieved. Conclusions: After translation from the original Uzbek and cognitive assessment, the Turkish ACSS showed similar good results for clinical diagnosis and patient-reported outcome as in other languages validated so far and could therefore now be used for clinical studies as well as in everyday practice.

The effects and roles of CaCO3 and CaO in the carbothermic formation of h-BN

Ali Arda Özkenter 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2012 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.13 No.5

The effects of CaCO3 and CaO on the carbothermic formation of h-BN were investigated by subjecting plain, CaCO3-added and CaO-added B2O3-activated C mixtures to N2 gas at 1500 ο C. Both additions were found to result in the formation of more BN with larger particle sizes in a given time. It was shown that BN forms in the absence of carbon in CaO-B2O3 melts but not in a plain B2O3 melt subjected to N2 by a mechanism involving nitrogen dissolution in and formation of BN from the melt. This mechanism, in addition to the reaction of B2O3 with C and N2, results in more BN formation in CaCO3-added and CaOadded B2O3-activated C mixtures subjected to N2. BN particles were also found to grow in carbon-free CaO-B2O3 melts not only in the presence of N2 when additional BN forms but also in the absence of N2 (under Ar) when no additional BN forms

      • Successful First Round Results of a Turkish Breast Cancer Screening Program with Mammography in Bahcesehir, Istanbul

Kayhan, Arda,Gurdal, Sibel Ozkan,Ozaydin, Nilufer,Cabioglu, Neslihan,Ozturk, Enis,Ozcinar, Beyza,Aribal, Erkin,Ozmen, Vahit Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.4

Background: The Bahcesehir Breast Cancer Screening Project is the first organized population based breast cancer mammographic screening project in Turkey. The objective of this prospective observational study was to demonstrate the feasibility of a screening program in a developing country and to determine the appropriate age (40 or 50 years old) to start with screening in Turkish women. Materials and Methods: Between January 2009 to December 2010, a total of 3,758 women aged 40-69 years were recruited in this prospective study. Screening was conducted biannually, and five rounds were planned. After clinical breast examination (CBE), two-view mammograms were obtained. True positivity, false positivity, positive predictive values (PPV) according to ACR, cancer detection rate, minimal cancer detection rate, axillary node positivity and recall rate were calculated. Breast ultrasound and biopsy were performed in suspicious cases. Results: Breast biopsy was performed in 55 patients, and 18 cancers were detected in the first round. The overall cancer detection rate was 4.8 per 1,000 women. Most of the screened women (54%) and detected cancers (56%) were in women aged 40-49. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and stage I cancer and axillary node positivity rates were 22%, 61%, and 16.6%, respectively. The positive predictivity for biopsy was 32.7%, whereas the overall recall rate was 18.4 %. Conclusions: Preliminary results of the study suggest that population based organized screening are feasible and age of onset of mammographic screening should be 40 years in Turkey.

      • Knowledge and Attitudes of Medical and Non-Medical Turkish University Students about Cervical Cancer and HPV Vaccination

Borlu, Arda,Gunay, Osman,Balci, Elcin,Sagiroglu, Mehmet Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.1

Background: This study was conducted to determine knowledge, attitudes and practices about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination of students studying in various faculties of Erciyes University. Materials and Methods: The study was performed among the first and fourth grade students of Medicine, Theology, Education and Economics and Administrative Sciences (FEAS) faculties of Erciyes University. It was aimed to reach 1,073 students and 718 were evaluated. A questionnaire consisting of 48 questions related to the socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitude and practices about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination was administered to the students. The chi-square test and logistic regression were used for the statistical analyses. Results: Of the students, 78.3% were aware of cervical cancer, while 36.1% of them were aware of the HPV vaccine. The percentage hearing about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination was significantly higher among the students of the medical faculty than the others and among fourth grade students comparing with the first grade. The marital status and the presence of a health worker in the family had no significant impact on the knowledge level of the students. The acceptability of the HPV vaccination was low among all students. Conclusions: The knowledge levels of the university students about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination are inadequate. This deficiency is more pronounced among the non-medical students and there is no significant increase during the faculty years. Non-medical students must be provided with information about important public health issues by elective courses. HPV vaccination could provide many benefits for men and women by decreasing the morbidity and mortality of cervical, anal, and penile cancers.

      • Vibration of axially functionally graded nano rods and beams with a variable nonlocal parameter

        Aydogdu, Metin,Arda, Mustafa,Filiz, Seckin Techno-Press 2018 Advances in nano research Vol.6 No.3

Vibration of axially functionally graded nano-rods and beams is investigated. It is assumed that the material properties change along the rod and beam length. The Ritz method with algebraic polynomials is used in the formulation of the problems. Stress gradient elasticity theory is utilized in order to include the nonlocal effects. Frequencies are obtained for different boundary conditions, geometrical and material properties. Nonlocal parameter is assumed as changing linearly or quadratically along the length of the nanostructure. Frequencies are compared to constant nonlocal parameter cases and considerable differences are observed between constant and variable nonlocal parameter cases. Mode shapes in various cases are depicted in order to explain the effects of axial grading.

      • Wind energy potential assessment considering the uncertainties due to limited data

Jung, S.,Arda Vanli, O.,Kwon, S.D. Applied Science Publishers 2013 APPLIED ENERGY Vol.102 No.-

A new Bayesian approach is proposed to estimate the annual energy production (AEP) of a site where construction of wind turbines is considered. The approach uses long-term wind speeds of a nearby weather station and short-term wind speeds near the target site. Uncertainties exist due to the limited amount of data in the target site, in addition to the inherent uncertainties in the wind speed, the air density, the surface roughness exponent, and the power performance of the turbine. The proposed method systematically addresses these uncertainties and provides the distribution of the AEP. For illustration, we used the wind speed data near Yeosu, Korea, and the power performance curve of a 3MW turbine. For the site and the turbine studied, the range given by the 95% confidence interval corresponded to 8.9% of the mean AEP, and the range given by the 99% confidence interval corresponded to 11.9% of the mean AEP. Benefits of using the Bayesian approach compared to the classical statistical inference was also illustrated with the case study. The proposed approach provides a more conservative estimation considering the uncertainties due to the limited amount of data. Distributions of parameters of the prediction model are also provided, which enables a more detailed analysis of the prediction.

      • Forced vibration of nanorods using nonlocal elasticity

        Aydogdu, Metin,Arda, Mustafa Techno-Press 2016 Advances in nano research Vol.4 No.4

Present study interests with the longitudinal forced vibration of nanorods. The nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen is used in modeling of nanorods. Uniform, linear and sinusoidal axial loads are considered. Dynamic displacements are obtained for nanorods with different geometrical properties, boundary conditions and nonlocal parameters. The nonlocal effect increases dynamic displacement and frequency when compared with local elasticity theory. Present results can be useful for modeling of the axial nanomotors and nanoelectromechanical systems.
